I appreciate that you took other fans' feedback into account. This review is a welcome improvement over the last one! With that being said I do believe that you're a bit confused about what I and probably other ppl meant to say when qualifying the characters as morally gray or flawed. I personally meant it as a way to say they're all just human basically. There's no fundamentally heroic or virtuous figures, just regular people (including yokai who are also somewhat humanized, as is often the case with Mizuki's works) from different backgrounds, some with more vices than others, struggling in an increasingly modernizing post-war japanese society. Kitaro doesn't need to be shown doing more good deeds (although he does do so in chapters of the original rental manga that weren't adapted) to be considered a neutral figure. For the most part his actions aren't so much evil as they are self-serving. He's just a clueless 6 year old trying to get some grub and money, and taking any opportunity to achieve that. The final episode is arguably the starting point where he becomes as scheming as Nezumi-Otoko. I know you probably don't want to, but I really advice that you give the series a rewatch at some point, especially now that you're aware of it being in a different continuity (Assuming you haven'tdone that already and are mostly taking ppl's word for some of your points). A lot of the things I'm telling you here are far from being subtextual, they're in fact pretty explicit when you pay attention. As for the dark comedy, it doesn't necessarily need to make you laugh out loud. I know it didn't for me. But the point of it is to balance out the darker elements to make for a lighter and less outright depressing or pessimistic watch, as Mizuki's works also tend to do, including gegege. Hakaba is pretty 1 to 1 with the original rental manga as an adaptation, with a few key changes here in there. I'm not expecting you to like it by the end of it, obviously, but I do hope you'll come out of it with a better understanding of how it operates with its cast, without needing someone else to tell you so. I'm sorry about the long rant, I hope none of it came out as harsh or rude. My apologies in advance if it did. Good continuation and take care!

Ok listen... Hakaba isn't really supposed to be a prequel to gegege. It's actually a wholly different continuity. It wasn't based on a single illustration but a whole rental manga Mizuki wrote in his early days which was discontinued due to low sales. It was originally intended to be a more mature social satire with Kitaro being a more morally grey character. He wasn't meant to be a superhero. When Mizuki started writing Gegege he had to change Kitaro into a more heroic figure by request of his editor in shonen magazine at the time (which he didn't like). This is the version that got popular and was adapted several times. Some of the stories in Gegege like Vampire Elite actually originated from Hakaba but were repurposed for the Gegege manga. So consider the original rental manga a "prototype" to what would become Gegege. Also, and I say this without any ill intent, but I suspect you either didn't give this adaptation a fair watch or you might've skipped around too much because Mizuki reappears in episode 2 and onwards (yes it's the same person). Kitaro and Medama rescued him from Hell (which he wasn't that grateful for either honestly lol)

In My Opinion, the 2007 version is my 2nd fav, including my 1st being 1996, 1985 being my 3rd, 2018 being my 4th (just because it just needed to be unique from the 2007 version), hakaba kitaro being my 5th, 1968 being my 6th, and 1971 being my 7th! Hopefully in season 7, we will have a unique take on episodes and can have the characters, especially Neko Musume and Kitaro having their ACTUAL personalities AND designs than the 2018 version. Also, i've been doing my own season 7 Gegege No Kitaro characters and designs! So if you would want to see that, stay toned! :D So as a Gegege No Kitaro fan myself, your opinion is valid to me, and i totally understand that you think the 2007 version is better than the 2018 version. And hopefully in the future, season 7 gets the better treatment and care it deserves! :D

There was actually a lot of stuff you missed about him and Megamix. For one thing he’s the author’s favorite robot master and while he doesn’t show up much in Gigamix (the sequel stories to Megamix), he does show up a lot in Mega Man Maniax, which is meant to be more light hearted and goofy. I’d recommend looking at Gigamix and Maniax if you want to see more of his personality from Megamix Edit: COSMIC COVE GALAXY MUSIC
