Happy Gothenburg Day! On the 11th May, 1983 Aberdeen FC defeated the mighty Real Madrid 2-1 in the European Cup Winners' Cup Final at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg. When Phil & Murray Smith arrived in Gothenburg the conditions certainly suited these two Aberdonians more than the men from Madrid as the rain poured and drink flowed. Although what happened on the pitch that night has gone down ...

    watching this again after a year ... thought occurred to me - if Dons took 40k to Parkhead for leg cup final few years back - and 12k ? to Gothenburg in '83 = wonder what crowd would be in unlikely event of getting to another Euro final ; i was at Athletico away approx 6k then even

    Must be the best garage in Aberdeenshire. Roddy and his team have serviced, repaired and maintained my cars over the years ranging from Alfa Romeos to Mercs, and from Bentleys through Jaguars to Rolls Royce. One of the few garages left that can diagnose faults in older cars without access to a laptop, and can rebuild and balance carburettors. Highly recommended.

    Wow what an brilliant film, this club and its influence on Scottish football at that time allied to this city’s influence on Britain as a whole makes Aberdeen a truly unique city, growing up here particularly in the 80’s was just magical.

    No matter how many times I watch the Bayern game or the Madrid game, It always brings tears to my eyes. I didn't get to Gothenburg, we were married just a couple of months before it and were skint. I didn't even have an aerial for the tv but still recorded it. Watched the final in the Broadfords Social Club.....can you believe it, 40 years ago. What a time to be a Don.

    Memories of '83' will never fade. I was just a wee laddie from West Lothian, surrounded at school by Jambo's and Hibbies. At home, my Dad and Sister, Rangers fans, my Mum a Dons fan. I'll never forget watching the Final with my Dad, and him rooting the Dons on, just about as desperate as me for them to win. When Hewitt's header hit the back of the net i went absolutely mental, shedding a wee tear or two. Then the torture of that last minute freekick having to be retaken. What a great night it was. One thing i have to comment on is this thing Aberdonians have of 'supporting your local team'. It's odd to me, as it's something which is never mentioned in the south of the country. Even having lived in Perth for a number of years, i never heard anyone saying it. It must be something specific to Aberdeen, quite why, i don't honestly know. Just let people support whichever team they want.

    • @kpsmithfilms
      @kpsmithfilms Год назад

      Great memories Scott. I think the supporting local thing is more about people from Aberdeen supporting Rangers and Celtic (Glory Hunting) which then means your local club loses out. It's an issue all over Scotland where people with no family or geographical connection to Rangers or Celtic decide to support them just because they win all the time. Of course people can support however they want however this just creates a greater casm between them and the rest and doesn't help the whole Scottish Football.

    • @scottw.3258
      @scottw.3258 Год назад

      @@kpsmithfilms The 'support your local team' thing isn't an issue across Scotland. As i say, i'm originally from West Lothian, been a Dons fan since 1979 when my maternal 'Granda' who came from Potterton, and was life long Dons fan, died. I told my Mum minutes after she told my Sister and me of his death, that i was going to support Aberdeen for him, to make sure i would never forget him. I got pelters all through my school days. Accused of being a 'glory hunter', bullied for being a Dons fan. It was disgraceful what i put up with in all honesty, looking back on it. There were lads meanwhile, who swapped teams at the drop of a hat. After we won the Cup Winners Cup, my primary class was half full of Aberdeen fans, by the time Souness turned up at Rangers, there were so many of these 'diehard' Dons fans were now 'diehard' Rangers fans. The majority of laddies though supported Hearts or Hibs. I do recall being asked ONCE in Primary 5 why i didn't support Hearts or Hibs. My answer was 'they mean nothing to me'. It's really not a big thing in the Lothians if you happen to support Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Dundee, St Johnstone... You maybe get a raised eyebrow, and that's really as far as it goes. I've lived in Glasgow in my adult life and i got laughed at for being a Dons fan, but overall, if you support a team outwith the central belt in Glasgow, you're actually admired in a strange way, they seem to appreciate that you're not the 'norm'. I lived in Perth and Perthshire for a while. Most people i met there supported one of the 'big two', a load supported one of the Dundee sides, and a fair number were Dons fans, there was even a lot of supporters of the Fife clubs, hardly any of the Edinburgh teams, which i found quite odd, i have to say. Again, though, there wasn't this 'support your local club' obsession there seems to be in Aberdeen. Let's be honest here, Aberdeen should've had a 50,000 all seater stadium back in the 80's and it should still be getting filled. There's what?, 260,000+ people in Aberdeenshire. Even if only 60,000 of those were Dons fans and 30,000 could make it to games every week, with 10,000 making one home game in every 4, we're looking at the stadium having 40,000 once a month, and that's only with fans from the area. You could then be talking another 4,000-5,000 from around the country, so realistically we could and should be getting crowds of 40,000-45,000 every home game. So it's nothing to do with 'support your local team'. It's a case of getting fans (particularly in Aberdeenshire) off their bahookies and being willing to go to games. There's more than enough Dons fans up there to fill Pittodrie 2 times over for ALL home games. Aberdonians need to get away from this 'support your local team' thing and just go to games. Perhaps we'd then see the new stadium being a 30,000-40,000 arena, rather than the 16,000 being talked about. Get the fan base that's up there to games on a regular basis. That's where the focus should be.

    • @IndieVolken
      @IndieVolken Год назад

      @@scottw.3258 we struggled to fill 24,000 a lot even during the glory days - SAF had a famous take on stepping onto pitch before Gothenburg game 86? where 18,000 I think were there = European Cup 1/4 finals ..... he'd said was part reason to move on I recall

    • @scottw.3258
      @scottw.3258 Год назад

      @@IndieVolken I know we struggled to fill 24k, but this is my point. Aberdonians go on like a broken record about 'Support your local team', but there's more than enough people in the Shire with the figures i've given to fill a 50,000 stadium, so the 'support your local team' argument is moot.

    • @IndieVolken

      @@scottw.3258 coming from a 'one team city' (aye I know cove now too...) there is a lot of pride there , but also huge contempt for guys that support old firm - this is obvs more prevalent in northern areas like peterhead/broch etc (don't get me started on the islands....) so 2/3 of Scotlands population are in the central belt plus add the people attracted by the glory/institution/religion indoctrination or whatever - prob as many folk from fife follow OF as 'local' clubs guess my point eventually is , population versus "catchment" area of club are not always the same - ie your standard weegie is typically way more into football than an Aberdonian -even the guys that go to pittodrie - for a lot of the OF fans it is life & death - we've got a decent 'latent' support in NE - ie a lot of good will towards the club ; but not enough to fill the seats - the clubs modern initiatives are great (i believe the children are the future .....) but we missed the boat back in 83/84 ; fans were still treated like crap typically back then -and the club never really built on the success (we were still wearing yellow "hysrasun" sweatshirts - when Hamburg etc rolled up with BP sponsorship ...) = so London has approx 10 mill - has roughly 10 teams ...... but that's twice the population of Scotland - lot of people there don't really care about football -i've always thought (based upon secondary school geography ...) that likes of norfolk & suffolk (norwich & Ipswich) are the best comparisons for the Dons in catchment are/sphere of influence etc - am sure the London clubs/Mancs & L'pool are similar 'distractions' to them tho as OF for us ,,,,,,,,,, ramble over
