Revolver - the Beatles' biggest experiment
The songs on Revolver use fewer chords than any other Beatles album. How did the Beatles overcome this limitation? [When I say other Beatles albums, I only count the Lennon/McCartney + Harrison originals on these].

John actually plays lead on Sweet Little Sixteen, which was inspired by Eddie Cochran's cover. They always honored the songs of their heroes that they covered!👍👍
You might be right there. John's solos often feature strumming across two or three of the top notes, which is what you get here.
@@songdoctor5783 Right! And on the BBC recordings the difference in tone between the Rick & Gretsch are much easier to discern.
Those early years in the clubs really honed their musical instincts, very few other bands at that time came close to matching their energy.👍👍
Very concise and clear. Plenty of information for less than 3 minutes of video.
It’s not “far less chords”. It’s about MODAL music. Indian music is modal; the jazz geniuses who’d previously been doing amazing things with harmonization were also going modal.
Greatest rock album of all-time.
John’s covers were outstanding. What a talent!
The first guitar solo on Long Tall Sally was John Lennon, the second was George Harrison. George Martian played the piano.
@@rocktober1327 Yes, you made me check that. John plays the first solo, George the second and the better of the two solos in my opinion.
And this isn't even skimming the surface of how this album was experimental.
To be fair, I think it does skim the surface. But, as you say there was a lot more going on.
Fewer chords, not less. Good video tho'
John could take a B- song and turn it into an A+ through his voice and aggressive attack. Every one of the songs that he covered became, forevermore, a Beatles song. When I listen to the originals, they are all pedestrian by comparison.
John had a phenomenal voice and attitude early on
rock`n`roll
_IN MYYYYYY LIFE_ omg just beautiful..
Dude, You are overthinking it. I am sure that the Beatles did not get together and discuss the fact that they want to use the least amount of chords of any album on Revolver. There is no indication of that thought process in any of the over 100 Beatle books, magazines, and DVD/videos that I own. As Freud said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Nice try.
Good theory, though!
Not quite actually because Paul said that he and John attempted to write a one-chord song for these sessions but only John succeeded in Tomorrow Only Knows -- Paul had to settle for a 2 chords in Paperback Writer. As for George, being at that time heavily influenced by Indian music it was only natural that he would use a minimum of chords in his songs since there are no chords in Indian music.
Rock and roll music is lennons best vocal
Someone below on this thread agrees!
I love this album
Good video
First Beatles album I bought. It was the Parlophone version. It was in a flea market. I think it was their first perfect album.
The only pop rock album that I like its songs individually, but I dislike it as a whole. To me, Revolver is a nice collection of singles, but a bleak album. And by the way... I never liked it the art cover work by Voormann.
He was one of the best singers, full stop.
Beatles ripped off almost all of their songs!
Very true! Who could forget his cover of ''Stand by me''?
Baby it's you and Anna are so brilliantly done by all 4 of them. Total geniuses that totally improved upon the originals!
Thanks for that as they had amazing harmonies.
If there's anything I CAN DO...
Awesome Job! Lets not forget Bad Boy!
Agreed…Bad Boy is one of the best overlooked covers in their catalogue.
He did an awesome job on anna
Very underrated song I remember that song on the Beatle cartoons when I would come home from school my mum saw the Beatles in 1964 in Sydney
@@isscleaner9563 yeah... And with all due respect to Arthur Alexander Lennon sang it much better...
@@isscleaner9563 I remember the cartoons . It's really awesome that your mom saw them... I've only seen Ringo in person
Don't forget Rock and roll music
@@user-mj9fn1uw5x yes indeed
O
For me I've loved John's covers of Twist And Shout and Rock And Roll Music, especially the last one blows away any other versions I've ever heard.
John Lennon's cover versions "with the Beatles" were very good indeed...but his cover versions after they broke up were not very good at at all...I grew up listening to all the same songs that he did...and that solo album he did of the oldies did not do those songs justice...I was sorely disappointed when I first heard that album !
Yes, the Rock’n’Roll album is a disappointment. One of those albums you listen to once and don’t bother to come back to.
Agreed. That is such a lifeless album
Well fuck me,I loved it does that mean I have to go to the naughty corner ?
Every one keep in mind Lennon never expected to release that album, and sued to stop it but failed, it was a demo tape in his mind never meant for release, the whole story is in the book 'Lennon, the Mobster & the Lawyer' which is a very good read
You really got a hold on me is great too
John had a way with Arthur Alexander covers. And girl song covers, like Ann Margaret's "I Just Don't Understand."
Arthur Alexander
@jpw43 thanks. I'll fix it.
Huh?? You pretend to have discovered a "trick" about what makes Beatles music good??? And you talk about this "trick" without even giving us the actual songs??? Worthless. Thumbs down on ALL "Beatles songwriting tips" videos.
The Beatles never did a cover that they didn't improve upon.
Like Linda Ronstadt who made all the covers she did her own.
Sorry...but I disagree...I grew up listening to the originals before I ever heard of the Beatles...their covers were pretty good...but not near as good as the originals !
@@formulas2730 I haven't found one in which the original didn't sound lifeless, as if the artist were trying to please a record executive in the booth. Please Mr Postman is a good example
Completely disagree with your statement
@@formulas2730: You have every right to feel that way.
Yeah, I always though his vocals on Money were just savage, some of his best. It's still hard to believe he and McCartney found themselves in the same band.
John just had an amazing rock and roll voice. Some of his lyric changes may have come from forgetting the original words, improvising and saying "Hey,I like that better".
Yes, I think so too.
I also like John's version of 'Stand By Me' too..
Yes he did a lovely job on that.
McCartney was a genius and was the one who arranged it
The Beatles were the best.
So I guess you could say they were The Bestles? (I am so sorry)

Yes
Is there anything I can dooooo??🗣‼️
Where would the Beatles be without those early "Woooo"s?
"Look what you've done! When you find yourself in the thick of it, help yourself to a bit of what is all around you."

Double falsetto?
i love that song dude tell me why is so good
Awesome video
Good video I never noticed these patterns in their songs, thank you
🎵My baby don't care!🎵😆
Yes, could have mentioned that one too. Great way to end a song.
"Happiness is a warm, yes it i-i-is...GUUUUU-UUUU-UUN"

Thanks!
