Riding a Waymo robotaxi in Arizona

I knew Waymo had limited availability, so I decided to take a couple of rides while I was in Phoenix for work. The Waymo app works just like Uber or Lyft, but there's no driver. My biggest takeaway was that this thing is driving like a person, not like a robot. I can barely begin to speculate the implications. This ride was on May 19, 2023.

Since I bought my Phantom 3 a few months ago, I've been accumulating footage. A couple of weeks ago, I built a computer for editing, and I'm currently learning to use Blender. This was done mostly to teach myself how to cut clips, add transitions, and change playback speed. Found a royalty free song and here's what I came up with.

I didn't want to bother him from his nap, so I sat there with a camera for about 45 minutes. He was still sleeping when I left but here are the best two minutes I got. Music for humor, obviously.

Hand flew this one, but right after I stopped the video I hit the return home button and it went straight up (as it should have) into the edge of the tree I was under when the video stopped. Sorry I didn't catch the crash on video! But luckily it wasn't too bad and after about two hours of repair time it's back in the air.

In Phoenix, you cannot park in red zones. Dropoff is fine. Rules vary by location and Waymo knows them.

Saw one turn left on a green than stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk .Almost got T boned by oncoming traffic before ut took off again. Pedestrians are unpredictable.

If you drive for a living, your days are numbered.
Depends on the city and country. It won't be able to drive properly when its cameras and sensors are covered by snow. It can only work in places like Pheonix
@@m.b5777 The sensors clean themselves fairly well while operating and these cars will eventually be able to handle icy or snowy conditions.
Well, the cameras work just fine. Obviously from a Tesla owner.
It seemed to do as good or better than a typical Uber driver. Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good enough.

There's a sticker on the dash that says something like "Do not pull on the steering wheel, vehicle may stop suddenly." Suffice to say I'm pretty sure it would just slam on the brakes instantly if you grab the wheel

I don't think I can stand it going at the speed limit. It needs to go between 10 to 15+ the speed limit.
Sounds like the speed limit needs to change. You'll never ever see these cars exceeding the limit.

These cars do not rely on access to the Internet. The computer that does the processing is inside the vehicle.
Pretty impressive but there are so many viables that can come to play while driving that's why I'll rather prefer a human instead for now

I got to take issue with your statement that "presumably they are safe. If they are getting into crashes, they must be paying millions to people to sign NDA and not say anything". We have public safety data on Waymo. So we know the crashes it has had. We know Waymo has not had any collisions with injuries. So Waymo does not need to pay millions to get people to keep quiet since nobody has gotten injured in a Waymo in millions of miles. So yes, they are objectively safe. I get you might be a skeptical. Maybe this is one of your first rides in a fully driverless ride. Maybe the tech "scares" you even a little bit. But falsely accusing them of paying people to cover up accidents is slanderous. Also, Waymo can do highways. They are currently letting their employees do rides on highways. Waymo still still testing on highways so they are not quite ready yet to allow the general public to take highways. But soon they will.

Not bad. I’m a professional driver in LA. I would have went into right lane to move a few cars up before aggressively taking a left. You can pull up to a red curb to drop someone off. There’s probably freeway laws prevent them. I’m glad you made it out safely. Too bad the music didn’t work.

Not every human driver. Maybe you would have. I wouldn’t have changed lanes at all
Waymo knows every square inch of every route it drives. But its routing decisions might not always be optimal for all traffic conditions, something they're always working on im sure.
They are currently testing freeway 101 .... coming soon..
