Renewed Homestead
США
Добавлен 5 апр 2015
We sold our home in Phoenix, packed up our belongings, bought an RV, and traveled 2,000 miles to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle, making the leap from corporate suits to muddy boots! We said goodbye to the hustle and bustle of corporate America and hello to the simple life as we embarked on our homesteading journey of becoming self-sufficient. Follow along as we trade boardrooms for barns and spreadsheets for livestock.
From city to country life, join us as we start our homesteading journey in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and work to build up our homestead, leaving it better than we found it with regenerative farming and permaculture.

Building a Livestock Trailer & a New Face on the Homestead
I've never been much of a lamb eater. I guess I need some good recipes.
Hi Momma T. We like it, but I find that you need to cook it low and slow. When I started I enjoyed this recipe for leg of lamb. www.recipetineats.com/slow-roast-leg-of-lamb/#wprm-recipe-container-23734
Great video guys! Love the mountain view!
Thank you friend. We are blessed to live here. 🙏😊
I had my play speed on 1.65 when your video started, so you were nearly flying that quad with the hay aboard.
😂 we would get through our farm chores pretty quick that way. 😂
@@RenewedHomestead
Sheep butchery, anything like deer? Made me think of dad when we had sheep in Nebraska. Raised but butcher did processing. You get the starter done in tractor yet? Mechanics there is always something that is throwing 🔧, husband currently rebuilding transmission on truck.
Hi Mandy. When Billy taught Ben he told us if you know how to butcher sheep you can butcher other game. Ben does deer, bear, sheep, and we will eventually be doing goat as well. It is pretty universal. Still don’t have the tractor running. Ben is working on it. He needs a day to work on it. Now that it is warming up it will be a bit easier. Always something. Hope your hubby can get your transmission working. 🙏
They looked happy to move :) I just ordered two of the knives. Urgent prayer request to stop the Canadian government from killing 400 ostriches Ben, Denise I sent an email to you with the full story
Thank you friend. I will watch the video today. These people are insane!!! They are always happy to move. I guess for them the grass is greener on the other side. 😂
Great video can't wait for future updates. God Bless from TN.
Thank you friend. 🙏
Great video Ben and Denise, praying for a healthy off spring. First time I heard that joke was on the Benny Hill Show, yes I just dated myself. God Bless from TN.
Thanks William! Ben loves the Benny Hill show as well. Ben didn’t know that joke was on there. 😂 God’s blessings friend.
🤞for a baby girl!❤
Thank you love! 🙏💜
Love the Dad jokes Ben! Pray the cow delivers a beautiful heifer 🙏
Thank you friend. 🙏😊
We like the updates. It was -27 wind chill last Wednesday, should be high 30s today! Big difference!
Hi friend. That is a huge temp difference! Enjoy the heat wave. 😂
Lived in both Wyoming/Nebraska/South/North Dakota as well in south. Different kinda cold. Wet verses dry. Each has its own uniqueness. But got southern man 28ish years ago so southern now.
Hi Mandy. That is a great point! The heat was different in the SW because it was dry. Do you like the south?
LOL You'd be fine up here. What a difference a week makes. Last Monday -25 today 37 Thanks for the updates on the cows and for that groan joke Ben. How is Hope doing?
Hi Mary! That is a huge temp swing. Enjoy the heat wave. 😂 She is about the same. We are going do an update soon. We are running out of options right now. I hope we can figure something else out. 🙏
Hope you have a healthy heifer this September. We are complaining about 35 degrees even though it climbs into the 60's each day. We're the real wimps, but then too, we have no insulation nor any heat source. Have a few hundred seeds in the ground but so far, no germination. Have a great time as you also head toward Spring. God bless you.
Hi Dwight. 60’s sounds too warm to me this time of year, but I am a little crazy. 😂 Keep us posted on how the seeds do. Praying for your mission. 🙏🙏
@@RenewedHomestead Out of 9 species we have seen the sprouts from the first specie this morning, the lettuce. Expecting more to come. Keep praying as every missionary family here has experienced at least some vomiting this week.
I now hear that you have at least one fire (possibly three) burning less that 20 miles away as the crow flies. This is all you folks needed after the hurricane. We are praying.
Hi Dwight. That is so exciting about the seedlings. I love seeing that. Prayers. 🙏
@dwighthires3163 thank you friend. They are getting the fire in bay cave contained, thankfully. Ben and I were just talking about it being a tinder box here in places like Mars Hill that are overloaded with Kudzu and Chinese Silver grass. We had all that snow but have been abnormally dry. I don’t know why more counties don’t do something about the brush.
Thank you
Thanks James. 😊
Thank-you for your encouragement!
Thank you. 😊
Awwwww poor baby,
I don’t really understand your comment….
Well spoken brother
Thank you.
Preach it brother!
Thank you!
Could be all the spraying in the sky, too, that is blocking out the sun. Just saying.
Thanks goodfriend. Good point.
@RenewedHomestead 😉
Amen Brother!
Thanks friend.
🙏for all my brother & sisters in Christ
🙏🙏🙏
Stay warm friends! Sounds like you're ready❤
Thanks friend. You as well!
Good job keeping ahead of problems and preparing. Stay warm, if you can. Praying all goes well during this cold spell
Thanks friend. Y’all stay safe and warm up there. MI looks like it is going get hit hard. 🙏
Sounds like you got warmth covered. Be safe on the icy conditions. We are not youngsters where sliding down hill is fun anymore. 🙏
Enjoy the beautiful snow while you can. I too, love playing in it when I am up north.
😂 I took a couple of dives yesterday and fell on my but. You definitely fall harder the older you get. 😂 Be safe!
@ SO TRUE
Stock tank heaters. 🥴
These waterers were in before we moved to the property and we didn’t even think about them freezing. We should have. At least we learned something. Thank you! 🙏 😊
Get your own bander. Cheap and easy for a few different species. You can also dehorn with bands in a pinch.😊
We always banded our lambs and calves when I was a kid. We were too cheap to use a vet for hardly anything.
Hi myprophet1. Thanks for the comment. We have a bander, we just figured while he was in the shoot they could do it, especially with the storm coming in. We bended our ram lambs and steer last year. We have never banded the horns before. Do you place the band toward the lower part of the horns? Thank you!
Hi friend. We banded a bunch last year, but we had them do it since the calf was already in the shoot. We don’t want horns. We learned our lesson with Cocoa. Did you poll any of your calves?
The cold snap is going to miss us here in Arizona, but I feel for ya.
Hi Randy. I know y’all are devastated about that. 😂 It has been warm there. We have acclimated to the climate here. It was 36 and the sun was out and I ended up taking my jacket off while I was working on the fence because I got warm. 😂
I have the same problem but it is only one duck out of 5 that this happens to
Hi michelemills, not all of ours had this problem either. Good luck with your ducks. 😊🙏
Looks like you are doing a fine job dealing with the cold. Enjoy your time with Billy and Michelle and all your friends out there. Nan, na, na na. While you were dealing with snow, we had fresh strawberries this week and were able to plant some of the garden today. I think Denise will be happy to hear that the very first seeds I planted were the Nardello pepper seeds she sent me. Then the next seed I symbolically planted were the San Marzano tomato seeds I received from another friend and sent a few on to her. Thank you, Denise, for those seeds. I now have 12 garden crops in the ground so am hoping for a reasonable harvest before the end of April.
Pro/cons snow or heat excess later. But sure nice to have fresh vegetables whenever can get. Also thanks for giggle on nah nana
@@Mandy-q6c The cool thing about our specific location in Mexico is that we rarely get hot weather. Maybe twice a year we hit 100 degrees and 10 days or so it will reach the 90's. Virtually 280 days a year the high is in the 70's. Right now, the highs are in the 60's. The problem here is the lack of rain, so we need to truck in the water we use driving the cost high. We reuse all water from showers and washing clothes for gardening. We may be able to nan, na nan na on the temps but not on the moisture. Every place on the planet has their pluses and minuses. God was creative with earth and very kind to us.
Hi Dwight! 😋 strawberries. Love strawberries. We still have a way to go with before ours come up. 😂 You have the advantage of warmer weather. I pray they come up nice and strong and give you many peppers. Glad y’all got to Mexico safely. Be safe friend. 🙏😊
@@dwighthires3163 Will take heat over lack of water any day. God is amazing-created for something special for sure. Had to go buy strawberries after the talk-love some strawberry shortcake
@@RenewedHomestead Thank you. We are excited to be here and will enjoy seeing how your Nardellos work for me.
Big cold snap coming to NY, too. Stay warm, guys 😊.
Hi Bond.girl. Thank you! Be safe and stay warm as well. 😊🙏
Yes Ben I found the video very entertaining. Thanks for the cheery disposition. The high here today was -5. Tonight low is expected to be -21. That is actual temp. We usually see a few of those every winter :)
Wow, -21 is cold indeed. Stay warm and still care for the animals.
That is a whole ‘nother kind of cold! Be safe friend!
We are facing the same kind of weather in south-central Kentucky. I’m tying to plan ahead as much as I can with feeding my animals but can’t avoid getting out some. Stay warm if you can. 🥶
Hi neuroadguy. Looks like KY is going to get hit hard. Be safe and stay warm. Prayers it won’t be that bad. God’s blessings. 😊🙏
Sounds like you have a great plan. Prayers for you all. We will be having cold temps here in W. Va. too. I’m hoping the weather man will be wrong but, it’s always best to be prepared. God Bless you Ben and Denice.
Hi Dean! Hope you and fam are well. Be careful, looks like y’all are going to get really cold. God bless. 😊🙏
Well if it weren't for problems you would get bored. Yes Denise does make you look good through the power of editing. God Bless from TN.
Truth 😂 🥰 thanks friend! God bless and be safe. 🙏😊
Right on!
Thank you! 😊
My household water tote froze.. Turns out Hubby unplugged it, without knowing what it went to.
Oh no! Did it defrost! I hope you were not without water for too long. 🙏🙏
@@RenewedHomestead We seriously had to dip water out of the stock water tote for over a week, while I waited for a replacement heater, because I thought it had failed.. Turned out I didn't need it... I've had water again for 3 days..
@HeatherNaturaly I remember having to do that with the pond and creek a couple of winters ago when a rat got on our well house. I understand. Not fun! Glad it is working again and now you have a backup. 🙏😊
Good job getting it figured out!
Thanks friend. 😊
That's a bummer. I used those for my pigs a life time ago. It's kind of a bummer that you live in the south with this GSM upon us..Up here our well controls and bladder tank are in the basement. So the incoming water pipe from the pump is 8 foot deep. We never have to run water overnight to keep the pipes from freezing . Of we might not be able to get out of the house because the snow is so deep when this thing really kicks off. 😅
Hi Tom! You guys are way more prepared for this type of weather. 😂 20 is cold to us but it probably isn’t all that bad for y’all. 😂 How did you fare? Looks like we have another arctic blast coming next week. Are y’all OK?
I’ve seen mixed results with those waterers up here in the Dakotas, my neighbor had one that would keep freezing up whenever the wind was blowing good. We rigged up a solar panel and a heat tape inside on the water line and for the last couple years no freeze ups!
Hi Excellence In Agriculture. That is a great idea. Thank you. I know y’all get way more cold than we do here in Southern Appalachia.
@ typically we do, this winter has been very mild with little to know snow. It was 40 degrees today! Whereas the east and south seems like you’ve been colder and snowier than usual
That is crazy! I never thought we would be colder than y’all. 😂
So disappointing to have the anti-freeze founts freeze up on you. I heard just last week what the Amish have done for decades. They dig a hole fifteen feet deep and place q 12-inch casing vertically in the hole and refill the rest of the hole. They then set their waterer on top of the casing. The natural soil heat rises and keeps the water above it from freezing. I thought that is a brilliant idea. I doubt you ever get freezing weather for more than 15 straight days so I imagine a 10-foot hole would be enough there.
Hi Dwight. That is a great idea. The ground temps keep the water from freezing. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing that! I wonder if we could get through the rock? 🤔
@@RenewedHomestead I hadn't thought about your rock. We needn't deal with that problem wherever we have lived. You will hardly believe what I stumbled across here in Mexico. It is an acre of so organic farm with small farm store. I have never heard of such a thing down here. It is run by two brothers and is open each weekend. It may be a resource for us down here..
@@RenewedHomestead, maybe you could put your wellhead in your root cellar. How cold is it getting in there during these cold times?
That is wonderful!!!!! Hopefully, you will get some food organic produce. 🙏 I do miss good avocados.
Hi Randy, the root cellar is staying steady with temps. It isn’t bad in there at all. The light is helping the well a lot. We need to replace the actuator and Ben has the part. We just need to get it done.
It was -16 here this morning. Got up to 5 but sunny and no wind so a nice day. I wear sherpa lined sweatpants and sherpa lined sweatshirt ....keeps me toasty Glad you got the water flowing
Hi Mary! That sounds nice and warm. I may have to look into getting some of those. Thank you. That is some cold weather there! I hear we have another arctic blast coming. Stay warm friend. 🙏
@@RenewedHomestead Yes another one on the way. We are enjoying a nice brief warm up now, 41 today The next wave of cold comes Friday night Monday's high -10 We get these sub zero temps every winter
@maryintx4409 🥶 stay warm friend!
Imagine how boring life on the farm would be, if we didn't have problems to keep us "entertained". Thanks guys, stay warm.
😂 never a dull moment. 😂
