I seriously feel sorry for everything that Moll suffered, her family despised her, they bullied her at school to the point that she took revenge on the person who bullied her and the whole community ended up hating her to the point of making her life miserable and when she finally found happiness in a man who loved her this ended in everyone hating her more for defending her loved one who blamed him as a murderer. She was rejected by the people of the community because they believed that she wanted revenge on the community for only defending the only one who made her happy who unfortunately turned out to be a murderer who did not care about anything but himself and this led to Moll who sacrificed everything. for nothing to end up killing him in revenge for everything that happened. According to me, the movie made it clear to me that when we treat that person like a monster and in the end he transforms into a monster. As the saying goes, if you see deeply into the hole, the hole will see you. Pascal was right when he told her that they were equal since he was a murderer, she ended up becoming a murderer. As clear as it was that Marta was who he felt was the true family that deserved everything, I like the detail with the letter that, though Harlan was cutting her loose with the rest, he wanted Linda free from her own weight of an "ungrateful freeloader" because he wants what's best for her when he's gone. That was her inheritance in the end. Her dad's last show that she is his daughter and he loved her. He's sneaky with the letter so Richard doesn't find it but its an old game between the pair of them that he knows Linda will see. He calls her "heart". Her motivation in the film was less financial like the others, but more out of possessiveness. HER inheritance from HER father. While she loses the material possessions of her father to Marta, Harlan made sure to leave Linda one last action of being her father.

The mans painting goes from having a straght face during most of the movie to a smile at the end. This obviously is symbolic of him being happy for her. Also I think he went out the way he wanted. Despite not actually being poisoned he thought he was and killed himself to protect her. This funny enough started the whole murder mystery which the old man loved. Mysteries. So not only did he free himself from withering away as an old man but he also was technically a part if a real mystery and gifted his favorite person everything. He got everything he wanted in the end.
