I still sincerely believe this was the nicest, friendliest interaction Jimmy and Howard had throughout the entire show

From my opinion, if Chuck was not there to orchestrate Howard from behind to down play Jimmy, these two would be a very good friend, Howard would totally support Jimmy and see Jimmy’s potential, and Jimmy wouldn’t spent years hating Howard.

Jimmy indeed is fundamentally sleazy and he owns it, but Jimmy does react here exactly the way I would react to the same situation. What's interesting is this is actually Jimmy's way of being nice to people. Any time someone he doesn't actively hate starts to spiral, he decides to instead make himself out to be the bad guy so they attack him instead of themself. Jimmy is, for the most part, willing to let people think he's an asshole if it means that nobody else gets hurt. And that just makes Chuck taking advantage of Jimmy's kindness all the more heartbreaking.

"you're a shitty lawyer, but a great salesman" is so Chuck. and him advising Howard to use his anger and frustration is genuine advice from Jimmy's perspective.

It finally occurs to me that Howard is very close to faultless. He really tried to run a firm the right way and promote growth from within. That’s Jimmy’s coup de grace, you forget that he’s manhandling everyone, friend or foe.

Seeing how it all ended, Howard should have made Jimmy a partner right here right now.

Even though Jimmy is goading Howard, it actually does sound like he's really encouraging him.

There's something outside all the components. More than the sum of its parts kinda thing. More than the writing, acting, pacing, camera work, lighting, production design. More than all of it. I just keep watching scenes from this show even though in so many ways a scene like this would be mundane, possibly even boring in any other context.

I feel like people completely misunderstand this scene. This is not Jimmy trying to help Howard through some motivational reverse-psychology bullcrap. Jimmy hates Howard. Jimmy responded to Howard offering him a job by destroying his car for absolutely *no reason.* "You've gotta fight." What does he think Howard is doing, grinding his way through stacks of paperwork every day? He's doing everything he can to save the company, and unlike Jimmy, he's doing it the proper way without turning to crime or fucking someone else over. This is Jimmy kicking Howard while he's down, thinly veiled as some masculine pseudoinspirational nonsense. And Jimmy is doing it only to make himself feel better. I see absolutely no reason to sympathize with Jimmy after season 4. He's the worst, and he's dragging Kim down with him.

I didn't really get this, Jimmy hates Howard and by this point he was well beyond caring what happened to HHM. is he actually genuinely trying to give a pep talk to Howard or is he just rubbing it in that Howard's life is falling apart? also these crippling financial problems HHM is facing, they don't come into play anymore in the series, by the next season HHM is back to normal with no explanation given. what was the point of introducing this plot point?

I really wonder how their relationship would turn out, if Chuck didn't constantly use Howard as a scapegoat for his sabotages on Jimmy's career. Tragic really, if I recall correctly, Howard was looking forward to having a team with Kim and Jimmy, until Chuck came along and screwed that up

I like how Jimmy was still emotionally attached enough to HHM here that he wanted to rouse Howard out of his depression by getting him angry and awake. Maybe deep down Jimmy didn't want to see his brother's firm go down the tubes.

The cool thing is that this confrontation really did have an impact on Howard, it helped him move on and also resulted in Jimmy going up in his esteem, as proven by the fact he offered him a job as associate later.

I’m so confused. Here Jimmy trying to helpfully uplift him, and then later Jimmy was offended by the job offer, hence the three bowling balls. 😐

It’s crazy how Howard did “use that” and got back to his feet. Jimmy was low key trying to help Howard, but he was too prideful to admit so he told him in a dickish way to get his shit together. That was exactly what he needed to hear
