The Rosslyn Fire (for String Orchestra)
An adaptation of the choral work of the same name, also by Jay Jordan, this new version is perfect for middle school string orchestras. The haunting melody in dorian mode set in a gentle 3/4 time is an effective setting for the perfectly metered and rhymed verses of "The Lay of the Last Minstrel: Canto 6" by Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832). This section of Scott's epic poem describes the phenomenon of Scotland's Rosslyn Chapel appearing to be on fire anytime a descendant of the founder of the chapel dies.

Frank Sumares was a real force in the San Francisco Bay Area jazz scene for many years as an educator, adjudicator, mentor, and pianist. Nigh on 50 years, how did that happen? I'd never seen this before tonight. Odd how much of this I remember, and how much I don't. Also odd how others see things that aren't apparent to one self at the time Our show at DCI finals used to be available on youtube, and my boys delighted seeing that I was a quarter beat late raising my horn at the end of the Rifle dance. Thanks for all of the memories.
