As an older woman with ADHD and fibromyalgia I have been dealing with this since the 1980's when I was a teenager. Thanks for showing me there's actually some research being done. I did a full double take when I read the word Fibromyalgia behind your head. I was finally diagnosed with FMS in 1999 by a Rheumatologist. It's still difficult to navigate life with these particular comorbidities, at least not without resorting to sarcasm 😅 so I totally get you here. 😢😅😂😢😅

I am todays years old that I found out I might be asexual. I am married for 11 years and been with my amazing man for 17 years. Now I understand more of myself. I always ask my husband why I felt this way. Growing up I don't get attracted to opposite gender, I get attracted to their intelligence and once they know I no longer get interested to them. When someone confess their love to me I never liked the feeling coz I know one way or another if I give them chances it will lead to sexual favors which is not what I want. I thought it was all because I was raised in a conservative family and I am all knowing when it comes to what men thinks. So when I was in college I even told my friend that I am not interested in men and I hate it when my friends keep on telling how they felt sexually towards the opposite sex, so it either I will find a man who wants platonic relationship with me or a woman which is easier to find to be in a relationship with me but with the same standing with mine that it is purely friendship (I can't imagine kissing another girl). I tried few relationship and ended it after coz I hate it when they took advances. When I met my husband and we started dating he took it so slow at my pace. He was so understanding of me and his assessment was because I never been into serious relationship. We navigate sexual experiences together and I remember my first time I said (oh! I thought I would feel grandest like a heaven opened up like-feeling) He would just say that over time I will enjoy it. I told him i could even read a book while he's making love at me, he would just say maybe coz its new to me. I took lists how many times he have sex with me like man in a day it would be 5x and 3x a week hahaha I was so confused why it didn't feel so good and if it was normal. One time I make the move and for the first time I felt orgasm and it was so good. I lasted less than 2 mins and then I am no longer interested. So if I want to feel good it should be me on top and let my husband do his thing while my mind will wander and think when will he stop. hahaha. I love being cuddled and being kiss. When my husband walks naked I felt no attraction, and when I walked naked he would be all over me. I would joke around that he was not normal and I was, not knowing it was the other way around. He always labeled me the loyal type of wife but I told him because I don't desire a man sexually not even him, but I love him if that makes sense. We were in a long distance relationship for 10 years and I am ashamed to say it was the best time of my life coz of no sexual contact. I felt horny at times and we masturbate together but it will always be my terms. I can call him anytime of the day either his asleep or at work and he would gladly surrender but if he feels the same it would take him few days to get a yes for me. Now that we live together I felt like sex is a chore for me. I always tell him maybe we had enough for 17 years and would stop now 😅 what I want now is companionship only. He just said I am hard work but he is determine to work out for me I just needed lots of foreplay but that's what I hate really when I get over stimulate. Sometimes I felt guilty coz he did his best for me.

AND we’re more likely to have connective tissue disorders! I think it’s the world’s way of balancing power; the neurotypicals have less pain but less brainpower (think Pinky), and the Neurodivergents have incredible abilities (think The Brain) but are hindered physically from taking over the world. Just a little Animaniac Theory for ya there.

I’ve figured out that I’m demisexual, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone explain that asexual and demisexual folks can still enjoy/experience sexual pleasure. I don’t desire sex nor ever feel actual sexual attraction. But… I have very much enjoyed the sex I’ve had in my very few closely bonded, loving relationships. It had made me feel like a fake, a poser, and very confused as I’m now more sex-adverse since menopause. It’s a relief knowing this is part of the asexuality spectrum, Thank you!

I developed a mental check list for something if I’m going to buy it. I used to grab almost anything hot pink, purple or Harry Potter in the sales section at places like Target. The first time I went to Target on my own in years I realized if I didn’t have someone to bounce ideas about purchases off of, I was less likely to get over excited and know I had all the time in the world to look something over without feeling rushed or I was rushing the person I was with. I used to put multiple things in a small basket that I like the look of and then go through it all before heading to check out. I ended up putting 80-90% of the things back once I really stopped and thought carefully about it. I have chronic pain and can’t wander all over a store to shop, much less put things back like I used to. So, I started looking each item from every angle over carefully BEFORE I picked the item up. It helped sooo much! I started to reach for a small, light purple water tumbler that was in the $5 sale section when you first come in that I always check out first. The more I looked at it, the more I could see it was too small to really hold the amount of water I needed and I didn’t want to be getting up extra times to refill it so I knew the odds of my using it were slim to none. Then I reminded myself I was having trouble storing the tumblers I already had and trying to declutter that cabinet for that very reason. The few I had that size were on their way out the door, because the size just didn’t work for me. Then I really looked closer at the color and decided it wasn’t a shade of purple I even really liked. (It was lavender, but if it had been a deep violet then this process would probably have taken longer than the few seconds it did.) I also saw that the lid wasn’t very well made and knew that would make it harder to open and close, the last thing you need for a tumbler you’re looking at to supposedly help you stay hydrated. So, I saw all of these details as my hand was in the middle of reaching for it, paused to admit I was right on all those points and picked it up to check the ounces it could hold and how difficult the lid was to screw on properly just to be sure I didn’t want it. As soon as I picked it up, I knew I was right on each point, but I still checked the lid anyway. It was way harder to get onto the cup part properly, and I returned it and walked away, feeling very happy I didn’t fall into the old trap of a colorful thing on sale rack grabbing my attention and making me realize only after the fact that I’m not really going to use it. It was a huge leap forward for me! 😃😃

The last time I told a family friend that she had hurt me by saying something, hoping she might do what my family and I do and say that wasn’t our intention, we meant X instead of Y but I can see how it might have come across as hurtful even though that’s not what I was trying to do in any way. Apologize and then we could move on. Instead, she immediately told me, “Oh, we’ll you shouldn’t take it that way. You’re just TOO sensitive.” 🙄🙄 I hated that one as a kid, too, but I worked on it so it wasn’t the trigger it once was. Hearing it come out of that person’s mouth, however, did give me a good indication that I didn’t want to be around them as much. I closed my mouth, turned and walked out of the room. As I went down the hall to my own room, I started to do the “Why did I do that?” line of thinking. But I cut it off, reminded myself that I’d brought it up hoping to minimize miscommunications with her in the future. Instead of berating myself for bringing up the hurt I’d felt and for having needs, I told myself how proud I was of me for tackling this issue. A few years before that, I would have been so upset that they didn’t care that anything insensitive they’d said had been hurtful to me and I’d have been annoyed with myself for speaking up and opening that can of worms. My response to her “you’re just TOO sensitive” showed me how much I’d grown already and how worth it working on triggers like “too sensitive” and “lazy” from my childhood at school etc truly was. I didn’t let that person’s inability to ever apologize for anything and the deliberately harsh tone with the “you’re just too sensitive” spoil my day. I did, however, stop spending as much time with her, when I did see her it was for a short amount of time and I started thinking of her as my mother’s friend instead of “our” friend. This helped a lot. I also reminded myself that just because the outcome wasn’t anywhere what I’d once hoped, I had still achieved a major win by talking to her about it in the first place. I also achieved a win by keeping to my boundaries and not giving much time to someone that immediately told me something I find extremely rude and dismissive. She could be my mom’s friend and someone I went shopping with on occasion, but I realized she wasn’t going to be someone I did deep dive discussions with anymore. It took me a long time to work up to talking to people when they’d said something I’d found hurtful but that was much healthier than internalizing it and letting resentment build without saying anything and then having it happen again and again until I see red like I used to do. No matter how someone receives our words, I definitely feel working up to talking to them is a huge win! 9 times out of 10 they didn’t mean what I thought they meant. My doing this encouraged my best friend to do this with me as well. It was something I had no idea had been taken in a different way from what I intended, but once we talked it over and I explained what I’d really meant and apologized, she felt much better. She used to be silent about feeling hurt and have resentment build up, too. So, I was really glad she gave mr the benefit of the doubt and came to me so we could have a good talk and more forward without resentment. What we’ve found works best for being hurt is saying, “I know this probably wasn’t your intention, but when you said this, I felt X, Y. What did you mean when you said this the other day?” It usually turns out the other person meant Z, something we hadn’t even considered. This approach works great with my immediate family and best friend, and I’m glad we have all become more comfortable with time and practice taking this approach with each other. It definitely helps how we communicate with each other and doesn’t let resentment fester. 🌻🌻

Why are all these comments assuming it‘s an excuse to be lazy or irresponsible? She never said anything like that. People who struggle with this need to understand themselves in order to do better, and if they try hard and fail anyway, they want to explain it to people to apologize and make clear that they do care! „just use an alarm“ well, duh, setting multiple alarms and putting physical clocks all around you are tools to help, but also: a crutch doesn‘t fix a broken leg!
