Given that the 1:600 range of ship models is quite limited, its fun to do conversions or scratch builds. This is an attempt to scratch build HMS Vanguard using mainly balsa wood and cardboard. Check out my other videos for more 1:600 ship model builds.

Building the Airfix 1:600 HMS Fearless, using plans from the Brit Modeller website to increase the detail. White Ensign Models photo etch was used where applicable. My decal skills are sadly lacking, but other than that pretty happy with this Falklands War veteran. Check out my other videos for more vintage Airfix builds.

Using the Airfix Leander kit to build HMNZS Canterbury, a fairly standard Leander, and also HMNZS Taranaki, a Type 12 conversion. There are also many other conversions you could do with this kit, so its still quite sought after. Check out my other videos for additional 1:600 Airfix builds.

Building one of the three types of ship at the Battle of the River Plate in 1:600 scale. HMS Ajax is also available and other 1:600 kits can be converted to HMS Exeter relatively easily. The completed Graf Spee is shown with the other two at the end of this video.

Assembling and upgrading this old Airfix classic. I never thought much of the basic out-of-the-box efforts of this I had seen, but with photo-etch and some extra detailing I thought it really came alive and I was quite pleased with it. As always, thank goodness for the internet and access to good photos of the real thing and of detailed large scale models from which to glean the extra detail.

Shame most ship kits are 1/700. 1/600 is a better scale to work with and look at. Great job.

superb conversions from a pretty good kit.Do you remember the long series of conversions in the OLD airfix magazines?. They were excellent articles where a begginer in conversions could develop their skills.. I wish modern magazines would go back to those fun days Instead of the modern ten pages of "how i bought fifty quids worth of aftermarket bits and used twenty different finishing products" to build a simple modell!

Always great work mate ,l have a question, where do you get the photo edges and 3 D parts lve looked on line but must be asking the wrong questions to locate sellers. Thanks .
Try Whiteensignmodels.com. There should be the full set of photo etch for the Airfix 1:600 range. I believe Atlantic Models also provide alternative photo etch which may be better.
3D parts I've bought that are very good are from Micromaster in NZ, but there are other suppliers. Refer my other reply for the pghoto etch.

Brilliant Job . My late father would of been so happy to have seen this build. He served on the Vanguard on the Royal Tour of South Africa in 1947. Still have a few old photos of the Vanguard and the crew taken during this time. I hope Airfix or another manufacturer will one day realise a commercial model of the last British Battleship.

Another great build, one more silk purse from a sow's ear. Haven't seen the Kangnam kit but don't think I'll get one anytime soon. I will be doing an Airfix Iron Duke when that's released later this year, and thanks to your inspiration, will look to super detail it with the WEM kit, Micro Master armament and boats, and a wooden deck. I built one of those as a teenager and want to see how much better it can be.
Been trying for a few years now to find a Airfix Leander Class frigate to build but no luck. Can anyone help me please to find one to buy.
I was chatting to an Airfix rep at a model show last year and asked him if there was any chance of a re-release of this kit. He told me that they still had the tooling for it so possibly may make the 'vintage classic' range one day. Fingers crossed
Great job. Turned a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Micro Master makes beautiful sets of both the RN 6" and 4" turrets that you could use for greater accuracy yet-ship's boats and other goodies too if you want to go the whole hog. I guess keeping costs under control was a factor, and your scratch building skills in any case worked a treat on the horrible kit items.

Remarkable rebuild that's added a tremendous amount of refinement to what is a really a crude model. Really like the toothpick mail masts-quite an ingenious use of a simple material. Too bad Airfix hasn't re-released the kit, I have fond memories of building it as a boy. Wouldn't mind having another go at it, doing something similar.
Beautiful work. The main turrets would be well worth replacing given the amount of detail you've worked in-the kit ones just don't cut it. Real silk purse from a sow's ear.

Very nice! I built one of these for someone who'd served on one. Nowhere near as good as yours, but the guy I made it for liked it well enough. I remember the hull/deck join around 'B' position being a real pain to hide. Took me a long time, a lot of filling and sanding.
Brilliant! I've got a few of these kits in my stash. Keep thinking of how I'm going to improve them when I finally build them.

Hi buddy ,l stumbled across your sight and are finding them very good information, lm messaging you to say great work and also l have every Airfix 1:600 model ship kit for years still in there boxes lm about to start doing them but l was wondering where you got the after market parts from haven't heard of any company's here in Australia doing that scale ,anyway lm starting on HMS Campbelltown. 😊😊😊
How do you fit your photo-etch railings? I'm in the middle of the airfix HMS Hood, my first model in decades. I tried using super glue gell but ended up in places with glue on the railings, I got them all on and it wasn't bad for a first attempt but I'd love some tips! Your ships are beauties by the way.
I use zap a gap supa glue. Make sure its all bent up before hand. Its ok if there's a slight bend to clear the deck edge. You just start with a small dab of supa glue at one end, wait till its taken, then dab the next little bit, hold the rails there. Also usually I don't paint where its going till its on, then the bottom rail creates a great demarcation line for painting. Curved sections can be pre-bent around a suitable diameter pen.
