I've always had the sense that the contests are scams. Why don't the winners ever sell their scripts? To me that can only mean one thing, it's a rigged game. the winners are likely friends and associates of the contest owners. They may be screenwriters, but their scripts aren't as good as the contests claim. On top of that, the readers are questionable. Who are they? are they actually screenwriters, or college kids?

I'm with you. I enter a few contests but not many and shifted more focus on producing my own shorts and writing for the stage at my local community theater. It's opened doors to directing and acting. I didn't land the contest win or sell a script but I'm getting to take control my of work, make friends, and be in a lovely collaborative space that feels much more conducive to my development.

I've been charged with First Degree Cringe in my work more times than I can count. The best advice I can offer - ya' gotta' allow yourself to FAIL - but fail FAST and SPECTACULARLY so you can get on with it. As a survivor of multiple table reads, I can assure you that it will be a Tilt-a-Whirl of emotions - high highs and low lows. But at the end of the day, it's all kinda' wonderful. Own it, occupy it, embrace it! Otherwise you'll have nothing to talk about on RUclips! :D ("...at the end of the day?" Ew, how cringe of me....)

And do you know when the information for films and stuff is being released? Why would a person without any contacts in Hollywood take up screenwriting, or enter a contest? Huge entertainment companies hire only well connected people. And stars hire their own people from their inner circle to write their screenplays. Screenwriting is a hobby. Get together with some friends, make a microbudget movie, have fun. Make fifty bucks at best. A good hobby makes life interesting.

Have you gotten feedback from beta readers yet? (you didn't say if you did or not) If not, I would have a round of readers have a go at it first. Even better if they're not from your writing group as they may have a hard time really giving constructive critiques. I've actually had some luck with online beta reader websites. (I could name one for you if you're interested) The only con is that you would be trading stories with someone else to also give feedback. (That could take a good amount of time depending on how busy you are) At the very least go in with the mind set that 'yes! maybe there are, maybe there aren't parts that are cringe! but it's statically impossible for all of it to be cringe!' (or at least that's what I tell myself) (srry for long comment, lol)

We did a short back-in-the day called Campus Cannibal Zombie Revenge (part 3) that was very GrindHouse before the GH movement came back. It was full of all the exploitation genre conventions and was Mega Cringe. It was all fun & games (we made it as part of a 72 hour film festival), but then we had to show it in front of a large audience and boy howdy, I was terrified like, “They’re going to crucify us.” They loved it. We ended up on cable access. It was the biggest thing we’d done to date. Point being: Art is risk. Sometimes you have to risk the cringe.

Maybe do an unofficial table, read with friends prior to doing an official one. In Ron Howard’s master class, he talks about using Table Reads as a way of selecting projects that he will work on. Sometimes hearing the screenplay out loud is the only way to see where the magic happens and where it doesn’t happen. But if you don’t want to commit it to the official unveiling, do something more unofficial first. Submitting it to friends for another read through and more editing sometimes can just make it even more confusing. As the Director/producer you need to hear it. 😊 you got this girl!

I think you make a good point separating the two questions. I would say that Rabbits was a book that I felt wasn't bad by the first scene but did not manage to pull it together in the last half. American Gods however did the opposite, where I knew it was good writing but I wasn't sure if it was going to be connected in the end and yet nearly everything tied together superbly by the conclusion, greatly increasing my respect for Neil Gaiman!

I've recently started considering film/directorial fellowships so this is perfect timing (although definitely not ready this year to apply). Thanks for posting this (and looking forward to your future videos on the subject)! Having applied to network TV writing fellowships in the past, I can attest that writing bios as the same tone of one's work suuuucks. As you alluded to, it's much easier to see what's tonally not working than it is to actually write the balanced execution. "Kind of infuriating," indeed!

I LOVE how you articulated that a script is only the start of a film, but it's not a film itself. And, I love the idea of you getting your script into the hands of actors to add layers and their creative input. Doesn't that scare you a little? Does it scare you to know that your script isn't 100% polished (by your internal standards) before you pass it to someone else to add creative input? I send out scripts when I need feedback from friends, but typically, once they're polished and ready for filming. I like your idea and I may have to get scripts into the hands of actors/artists earlier for see where it ends up creatively.

@@CakeFightFilms 1. Have at least two backup readers for last-minute cancellations. 2. Give the readers a heads up on any strange name pronunciations. 3. Cast readers in the appropriate age ranges for the characters. 4. Cast readers with the appropriate voice types for the characters. 5. If you don't know all the readers, make sure they have been vetted by someone you trust. 6. Make sure whoever is reading the scene headings/action blocks has read the entire script beforehand. 7. Have a break at around the midpoint of the script so that people can use the bathroom or get water, etc. The recording can be paused and resumed. 8. Segueing off #7 - just because a participant's video has been turned off does not mean their audio has been, too. Remind the readers to keep it classy during the break. 9.
