Hi, welcome to my channel.
Here you will find some of my guitar pedal comparisons videos and original music.
I am primarily interestered in how the pedals sound in the context of a piece of music. I don't really care about the subtle differences that can be heard between pedals when they are compared solo. I want to know what differences (if any) can be heard when they are used in a mix.
Where possible, I use one pedal as a 'control' and compare others to it, that way you can hear the relative difference between them in different videos. I compose and record the backing loops and use the same one for each pedal type for consistency.
All pedals featured on this channel were purchased by me and (like you) I pay the retail price for them. I don't monetize this channel so any adverts you see are placed here by youtube not me. All I ask is that you place a 'like' on my videos if they help you.
Hopefully these comparisons will help you and perhaps you may enjoy my music.

Solo rhythm guitar: BOSS SD-1 OverDrive vs BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver into a Marshall JTM-45
This is a quick comparison of a BOSS SUPER OverDrive SD-1 with a BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 on a solo rhythm guitar. The rhythm guitar part can be heard in a mix in this video ruclips.net/video/gKUT2cXDaSo/видео.html
The rhythm guitar track is being re-amped through the pedals to a into the front of a Marshall JTM-45 head (channel 1) and 2 x 12 (1936) celestion impulse reseponse.
To keep the video short, I am only varying the DRIVE control.
The BD-2 is louder than the SD-1 so I increased the LEVEL on the SD-1 to match.
The GAIN on the BD-2 was interesting as it was less pronounced than the SD-1 at a low setting but more pronounced at the higher setting.

BOSS DS-1 vs BOSS HM-2 Distortion into a Marshall 1987x amp

This is a quick comparison of a BOSS DS-1 Distortion and a BOSS HM-2 Distortion. Comparing the TONE controls was difficult, so I choose to move the HM-2 controls as if they where one control. The rhythm and lead guitar tracks are re-amped through each pedal, then mixed with bass and drums to create the video soundtrack. The amp is a Marshall 1987x. BOSS GE-7 EQ noise comparison: 2024 Model vs 1991 Model. Visuals only, no audio
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Note: there is no audio for this video, just visuals. This is a comparison of the noise levels of two BOSS GE-7 EQs, one from 2024 (on the left) and one from 1991 (on the right). The 1991 GE-7 is made in Japan, the 2024 model is made in Malaysia. To make the comparison fair, I powered both pedals using brand new batteries. I didn't use power adaptors as the old GE-7 uses a 12v supply, while the...

#guitarpedals #guitar A quick comparison of the classic DS-1 Distortion this time against the MXR Custom Badass 78 Distortion. While the MXR 78 is based on the classic DS-1 circuit, it is much louder and has a little less gain in it's normal mode (crunch switch off) I am re-amping the guitar tracks through the pedals, swapping between them while increasing the distortion or tome. The pedals are...

ProCo RAT2 (USA 1980s) vs modern RAT2 into a Marshall 1987x
The Blues driver is too trebly for my. I like the warmth of the Super
Both awesome!
I love the grit of the HM-2 and the high frequencies of the DS-1. The DS-1 works really well on an already overdriven amp, while the HM-2 is really good on a clean amp, at least when it comes to higher gain. I love to use the DS-1 as a light overdrive/clean boost though, with tone from 9-11 and distortion from 0-12. Another thing that is good about the DS-1 is to turn down the distortion and turn up the level and run it into a drive pedal.
Thanks, some great suggestions there that I will definitely try. Most people don't spend as much time as you getting know the pedals, and that is a shame because as you describe there are some great sounds / uses to be found.
Just what I was looking for, great comparison, thanks!
Thanks for your comment, I'm pleased my video helped you 🙂
I'll be honest I would be cool with both. I enjoyed the super overdrive more but when u put it at 3 o'clock the blues driver I felt I saw the difference of what it offers in sound and taste
Once the gain is turned up on the Blues Driver it almost turns into another pedal (more of a distorted fuzz)
I'll stick with my SD-1 I've had for over 30 years.
It's amazing how long BOSS pedals can last, my oldest (HM-2) is now 36 years old and still working
Why I can't hear any noise, that the GE-7 is normally reproducing?
Rusty Fuzz sounds fuzzier
thanks i was looking something like this without breaking the bank so simple yet so amazing
You're welcome 🙂
I actually have both of these!!
The Super Over Drive pedal sounds great on bass. It sounds huge and mean. Used it for years. It's better than the actual bass version. A lot of treble guitar pedals sound great on bass.
Thanks for a great comment. You've made me realise I've never tried this pedal on bass (I usually use fuzz) I will give it a try.
I have a bassass OD. I guess there is no reason to get a super OD.
I would say the Custom Badass has more tone shaping options than the SD-1 while the overdrive sound is essentially the same for both. Then again you might feel the need to have a very yellow overdrive pedal 🙂
BD-2 is a great pedal, but SD-1 never leaves my pedalboard, as I find it to be more versatile in different amps and works better when stacked with other drive pedals (these days I'm stacking it with RAT). It can be very subtle and give just enough of a kick to change the whole tone for the better. In comparison, BD-2 colors the tone too much by itself for the way I like to use my drive pedals.
SD-1 for me. The BD-2 seems to lose the tightness when cranked.
Why don’t you tune the guitar?
Relative to what?
@@octoplodrelative to a guitar tuner at A440Hz in standard tuning
@@TheGuitarModder why, when it's a solo guitar part?
@@octoplod It's not tuned across the strings relative to itself, is what he means.
I currently run a DS1 into a BD2. Its the best gain stacking I've ever tried and I've tested a ridiculous amount of gain stacking in the last few years, even the boutique stuff like Browne Amplification and Kingtone, Analogman etc. something about the woodiness of boss drive pedals just gets me. I've never tried an SD1 but definitely need to
If you like gain stacking have you tried the BOSS Angry Driver? It is on my list to try. It seems to have some good stacking options built in
@octoplod I have not but that thing sounds like an absolute beast! Definitely on the bucket list as well
@@octoplod I have it on my board and it is great. You can run the two pedals in parallel and turn the treble up on the blues driver and let the Angry Charlie take care of the mids. That way you get a really full tone that cuts through the mix without losing any width in EQ. Or you dial back treble on the BD and boost it on AC and you get the two pedals on the same frequency level but with the two different types of drive blending together in a mid focused distortion.
@@snakeweirdo Thanks, I really want to try the Angry Driver now 🙂
The Mooer ensemble king sounds good for me.
Yeah, for me it is definitely the Blues Driver. A much more versatile gain pedal with more mid-range. And when you crank the gain, you can almost get fuzz-like distortion.
That's so true about the fuzziness at the higher gain settings. The BD-2 starts like a classic BOSS overdrive when the gain is low but transforms into something like a fuzz pedal as the gain increases
I hear a bass boost on the BD-2
It is hard to tell on youtube even with the solo'd guitar track. I think the bass frequencies suffer the most degredation on youtube uploads which is why I prefer the full mixes.
@@octoplod Do you know how the sound quality is on Bandcamp compared to RUclips?
@@AmbientSound7 I've never tried bandcamp but it's focus is audio so I suspect it more faithfully repoduces the sound. Its not that youtube is bad, you just have to be aware of it's audio limitations
Does the BD have that terrible bass roll off like the SD-1, hard to tell here?
That is an interesting question, so I made a new version of the video to help answer it ruclips.net/video/VB59FfWhBU8/видео.html
en mi humilde opinión el mxr es superior porque no recorta agudos
This boss was my first pedal. It was a gift from my soccer coach. I didn't use it for almost 15 years, but now I use it every time I jam.
The Boss BF-2 is a great old analog flanger pedal
Pot values are different that’s all you could bring the volume up in the tc
really like the way the boss sounds
Not how you use them at all
It's just a simple comparison of the how the pedals sound with the controls in the same position.
@octoplod The SD-1 is a replacement for a Tube Screamer as a boost for usually a Marshall JCM800, that is over 90% of its use case on records and live performances.
Behringer winner.
The Boss sounds more wet to me.
The RAT sounds richer somehow. Fuller, more warm. Might be matter of adjusting the tone in the Magus. Maybe trying the FAT or TURBO modes on the Magus?
Yes, I plan to do that soon. It will be interesting to hear the difference those modes make.
Your videos should be more popular, theyre very well made and helpful, no bullshit.
Thank you for your support. I make the videos just to help other guitarists, so if you found them useful that is great!
DS-2 for me. It has more weight and less bright.
Super helpful, love it mate
thank you for your comment 🙂
The blues driver is a BEAST
Directo al grano, Buen trabajo🎉, ojala los demás hicieran los tutoriales así
What are you playing through ?
A Marshall 1987x head
Purple body and white knobs. No more changes?
and a price increase 🙂
Супер Овер Драйв можу продати
I am interested in hearing the other modes of the magnus.
The Boss DM-2 was the first pedal that I purchased. Analogue and made in Japan! I still have it today! Thank you for sharing 🎸
It is a classic analogue delay and probably collectable today.
I have them both. The carbon copy for the win
Really? I have a carbon copy and it is by far my favorite pedal but I have been interested in the dm2w and the Dd3t for a few months now. I want to stack delays but maybe I should just get another carbon copy
@ both are great, if I had to pick one it’s the CC.
I’ve owned the CC and DM-2w at different times. I didn’t gel as much with the DM-2w. I have neither right now, but miss the CC. I think I’ll get the CC Deluxe.
backing track is very loud
I love this type of videos
That Phase 90 sounding like a champ.
There's a noise filter in your camera
Thanks for the comment. I don't capture any audio using the camera, it is recorded via a sound card but noise filters can be useful cameras
Both are sweet, slightly prefer the SD-1.
Mooer is better option, even better than original proco
The Mooer Black Secret pedal is very good especially if you are looking for a more compact version of the RAT2
Why with delay, omg. So wasting time :-(
i use tc electronic thunderstorm for chorus sound and it's sound amazing
OS-2 is such a great Pedal! I use it in DS mode through Ch1 on my Mig 50. All my other Pedals are lying around, after I got this one by accident (was in the box from an Fender Amp I bought used). People probably try it with wrong Amps.. For example it didn’t sound too good through the Super Crush I owned, but the Mig 50 is an AMAZING AMP that loves Pedals!
I find it responds better to valve amps rather than solid state. I guess that isn't too surprising as it came out in 1990. The Mig 50 is amp I always wanted to try and I'm quite tempted by the resent reissues.
@@octoplodI got one on Sale for 530€, so it was an easy choice.. For 800€ I would‘ve maybe considerd the 5150 since I play Metal.. but I‘m very happy with my Mig now.. you get 2 Amps in one, with an ABY even 3… the clean Sound is perfect
I don't get the whole Super Fuzz thing, it sounds awful even for Doom. Muffs or RATs all day, it they aren't enough just boost them.
Boss for sure.
