Post op physical rehabilitation following canine cruciate surgery
My cat suffered from sacral nerve damage post a hip luxation repair surgery post a 4 story fall. He was knuckling for 8 weeks without progress. My cat was refused services for PT because the vet said my cat was really rude and aggressive. The orthopedic surgeon said we were going to have to amputate his left hind leg because he was knuckling and self mutilating his paw (The same surgeon also said that his leg had been destroyed from the fall and that he would never be the same). I found a very sympathetic Veterinarian who was extremely knowledgeable about cat behavior and had studied Chinese medicine. Through a combination of acupuncture, electro-therapy, and herbs my cat made a full recovery and has regained complete sensation. He has gone back to doing 100% of the activities.
how beautiful, broke my heart in a good way, cried for joy for JP the whole video, helps me look into help for my pets :)
My dog has this ..but unfortunately cannot afford 12 000 pounds and all the treatments your lucky dog has .. 😢 s
Several dachshunds over the years, only 2 have had IVDD issues. One, Nikki, very minor, crate rest, and proper medical care, no surgery needed, recovered 100%, full strength. She is now 14 almost 14, and once in a while has a slow day, she tends to pull a tendon in her front left leg. My other dachshund, Dezzi, needed back surgery, several discs, and later neck surgery, a couple of discs. Rare but can happens. Dezzi had 3 or 4 other events that did not need surgery. Each event, she lost a bit signal strength down her spine. But she always recovered well, with proper care, if a bit slower as she aged and had events. She lived to be 16, and it was brain tumor that finally got her. Of course, I had ramps everywhere, and jumping was greatly discouraged. Never let any of my dachshunds get over weight! Post surgery exercise is key, with strength training. Like humans, dogs have to basically relearn reprogram walking, based on changes to the spine. Since you have to teach the brain to send more signals at a greater frequency down fewer 'lines' in spinal column, since it is bundle of nerves, and with IVDD, a few 'lines' get impacted with each event, typically, in the worst cases. Dachshunds adapt, just as humans can. I used to joke... that my 'problem' dachshund paid for her extensive medical costs, at 10 cents a tail wag.... Dezzi paid me back at least 2 or 3 times, over the 10 years after fist issue at 6 years. Miss you Dezzi.
Great work all! Good to see the little fella walking again.
When my dachshund jumped off the sofa and lost the use of his back legs the vet gave him pain meds and gave me a sling to use on his back legs. I purchased a stroller to keep him in when I wasn't exercising him outside and in 2 months he was back to normal. It happened again although I don't think he jumped off of anything I really don't know what happened but I did the same thing and he's pretty much regained his ability to walk. Maybe a little weak in the back legs but gets around fine if he doesn't have to walk on slick floors. The stroller was so useful in keeping him confined and he actually loved it. I am so diligent in not letting him try to get up and down from the sofa and he's learned to wait and let me lift him up and down. Also had a ramp built for him to use as I have steps at my door that he comes in and out of.
This is an old video so I'm not sure if this comment will ever get through. I have a dog going through something similar right now and I have two questions. Did did JP have "deep pain sensation" in the hind legs post surgery or was there no feeling at all? And secondly, was he incontinent entirely as well? My dog can't feel anything in her hand legs and is largely incontinent and so I'm looking for some sort of similarities to give me hope
We treated JP conservatively without surgery. We have treated paralysed patients successfully with no deep pain sensation as well as incontinence. The success rate becomes much higher if the return of deep pain sensation is fast. Often patients can remain incontinent until they start to stand and sometimes until they start taking steps.
My little Coco bean a toy poodle-beagle mix suffered a herniated disc that affected her spinal cord causing paralysis in her hind legs. We are at the start of this journey and feeling quite overwhelmed. She had sensation the night before surgery but lost it on the day of surgery and since. We are hoping to bring her home from the hospital tomorrow. Trying to think realistically if we can truly give her the care she deserves. We love her so much. How is your dog doing?
Does this have any effect on a dog 4 years after a severe FCE injury?
We or your local vet would need to examine your dog to be able to advise on the best treatment options.
I'm sitting here crying watching this sweet boy make such a remarkable recovery, it looks like he was a wonderful patient! And what awesome owners to do everthing in your power to help him on this journey. Our beloved little mini dachshund just came off crate rest for IVDD and she's doing so much better, it's encouraging to see videos like this and how much progress can be made even if things don't look so great at the outset. I hope for continued good health for JP!
❤
Excellent information
Great guys who help this little buddy to recover and walk again. The results are incredible. I am a dachshund owner and I hope my little Elliot will not suffer back problems. I say it again : what a wonderful family you have been for this little darling. Love from France. ❤
What annoying white trash music
How did JP experience his recovery when it looked like he had no use of his back legs? Also, did you have to express his bladder? How would he move his bowels? What a dedicated bunch of people. It's amazing how much love our pets inspire. ❣
My heart...
Excellent video! My dog had FCE and was knuckling and dragging and I used a sling to help her walk, grounding her legs/feet and supportive standing to eat/drink, etc. I put my finger in the paw pads of her bad leg and she started to get reflexive response. I also did range of motion exercises to her bad leg which was very stiff in extension. She also developed wound to top of her bad paw from dragging that i treated with dressing changes 2x/day. She was treated with IV steriods at vet in beginning. She is walking and running and doing everything again after a few months. Her one leg is still visibly weaker but 100% functional, although I don't let her up on high bed/jumping from anything too high because I think she maybe jumped down from bed when i was at work at thats what caused the whole thing. I am so happy with her recovery. She has a new lease on life, and our work together towards her recovery made our bond stronger than ever! I pray for anyone who has to go through this! It can get better!!!
My 11 yo Pekingese-Maltese-poodle mutt lost the strength in his legs 1 week ago. The vet says IVD bulging / herniation. He originally was very weak in the hind legs and was unable to consistently place the left rear paw correctly on the ground, like a human foot drop, so he would place the paw top side down and try to stand like that. The foot was bent under him. I will disagree with your slide stating that if you see this sign it means nerves will not regenerate. You are mistakenly taking hope from people although you obviously have wonderful intentions. As a chiropractic orthopedist I can tell you a sign like this can be temporary. In one week he clearly has more strength in the dorsiflexors of his paw because he is bringing the paw up as he swings the leg forward which he could not do previously. It will be a long recovery. Thank you for your information as this is truly sad when it happens to both the dog and his owners.
i wish all vets were as helpful my vet basically took my money performed the surgery and then disappeared… no help with after care or rehab or anything… im hoping my baby will grow his nerves back so he can walk again. im trying rehab at home but i wish i had professional help. but alas, im glad there are good and helpful vets out there making sure these angels get the best treatments for the best recovery possible
Any update on your pet??
🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’m glad that he’s walking again 👍 but how much did the owners spend on treatments and therapy ? 😅 I assuming a lot of money
2 of my dogs (bichon frise) had experience this, your videos are so helpful. How long should they stay on strict cage rest?
For Gods sake turn that bloody music off!
Nobody forced you to watch. Some people enjoyed the music. Do you really think it is all about YOU? Come on now…if you don’t like something ALL you have to do is go and find another place for info. Better yet, make your OWN video. Your judgement/righteous indignation would be much better placed elsewhere.
Can anyone suggest where to get Sticky Pawz, ToeGrips, gel nails or PawFriction in the UK, preferably without using Amazon?
What supplements did you use?
Are you able to feel hip dysplasia when they walk?
Hi so if my baby is knuckling he won’t ever regain use again??? Because he seems pretty strong and he has jumped to his paws and fell over but he is determined? I can’t afford the surgery yet but where there is a will there is away that’s why he has a RUclips page can u please like subscribe and share so he can to have the surgery and life he deserves it’s called barking for boy boy thank u and I hope ur baby is still making progress and live the best pup life ever
What did all that cost?
How often acupuncture was given?
,, +-
Was the cat given any painkillers or medicine during the treatment? Our cat has a similar limping issue and seems to be in pain, eating and drinking less. Painkillers help improve mood but is there anything else that may help?
❤
Way to go! The determination & love the owners had to all things possible! 😭😭🥺🙏🏽
Yes, all that, and money. This most likely cost 10-20k total. It would be great if all people could afford it for their pets. I'm glad this little guy recovered; the story is adorable and shows that recovery is possible.
This makes me cry - my dog has grade 2 and now I am crate resting but I will do my best to rehabilitate her - I have to do it myself as I can’t afford to get professional help
how is your baby?
Praise God JP is walking so so happy for him
This gives me hope! Thank you!

@@Raquel-cq2jf Wow! What did you employ through your journey
@@Raquel-cq2jfcan i ask what steps you took? i tried the acupuncture therapy with no results
@@omeometeotl i did range of motion exercises like what was shown in the video every day, i performed daily massages on her legs to try to help her get sensation back, and i bought a dog sling for hind leg support to use while trying to get her used to walking again..a combo of all three of those worked like a charm!! i wish you the best of luck
My dog has IVDD at the moments and its been 4 weeks (almost). He was on Pain meds, along with some steroids and anti-inflammation meds. Now, he is still not able to stand himself but whenever we pinch his toes(back), he throws back his legs just like trying to stop us from doing that. Is that a good sign to recovery? What shall we do extra in order to get him on his feet yet again? Thank you so much in advance🙏🏻
Please try to find a local vet or physical rehab therapist that can offer the various treatments (acupuncture, physiotherapy, medications etc) for your dog. He or she will prescribe a home physio plan with the different physio exercises that you can do at home. It is a positive sign that he is reacting so strongly when you pinch the toes.
Hi, My dog just recently diagnosed with IVDD and it progressed so fast that all of his 4 legs become paralyzed. I live in Indonesia where theres no MRI yet for dog so its making the surgeon cant operate him yet. Since he cant walk or even lift his head up, he can’t control his bladder and poop, so theres also another problem with his organ. Its been overwhelming, I cry most of the time. Hoping theres another way until we can find a way to operate on him 🥲

Thanks for your reply. thank God the cat is running again
This is an awesome video, Gemma always had a smile on her face and you love to see that. However, I am a bit confused as to what exactly the treatment was? We saw her practicing walking and you mentioned accupuncture... whilst I am hugely skeptical of the latter, there was other therapy mentioned but only briefly. What was the main treatment?
My dog has Ivdd and is probably a grade 4 because we know she can still feel pain, what is the cost to do physical rehabilitation and lazer etc? And do a lot of vets offer this?
My 3 year old dog just suffered FCE yesterday, and will be using this as a template. It is just in one hind leg, and she seems to have a little control and feeling. Belgian Shepard, and people are always commenting how fast and graceful she is. I'm afraid she'll never be the same, but she'll be happy and loved no matter what
Thank you. I didn't know the exercises were so important early . I think mines a stage 4. Hes at 2.5 weeks I started more physio this week and bought a laser I've been using. Just not sure if my exercise ball i already have I've been using is too big and I've been frightened to put him on the treadmill, even at speed 1 but I think I'll get someone to help me and possibly try tomorrow. About how long would you reccomend physio exercises per day ? Especially since their supposed to be on crate rest, never know how much to do.
We normally advise home physio exercises 4-6 times per day. The secret to success is small amounts as often as possible every day.
What stage was Jp's case? I am so happy seeing walking again!
JP was initially Grade 4.
did JP go through surgery as well or did they just do all the therapy's and rehabilitation's? @@almakerr7
