This song was first released by Bob Dylan in 1973. This song was later sung by Guns N' Roses and other musicians such as Eric Clapton, U2, Avril Lavigne, Bob Marley and other musicians. Finally, this song was included in the Guns N Roses album entitled Use Your Illusion II
The lyrics of this song are directed at the American war soldiers who were killed by bullets.
The author of this song expressed his frustration with the American government at that time which sacrificed many of its soldiers to attack Vietnam. He hoped that through this song the door to eternal life would open for the soldiers of that army.
