Two Small HO Scale Locomotives from eBay: Unboxing and Restoration
Просмотров 99День назад
Recently I found this ho scale lot of two small locomotives on eBay for $20. I specifically wanted the Playart 0-4-0, as I had one years ago that I regret getting rid of. The tyco trolley is another fun addition, and today I restore both models. Question of the day: should I keep the trolley?
HO Scale Union Pacific Grain Train Running Session

The other day, I took my ho scale grain train to the South Bay historical railroad society to run with my Union Pacific and Chicago Northwestern locomotives. Question of the day: what locomotives should I buy for this train?
HO Scale Bachmann Niagara With Cracked Gears - Can It Be Fixed?
Просмотров 11914 дней назад
Today I attempt to repair this HO Scale Bachmann Niagara 4-8-4 steam locomotive with some replacement gears from eBay. I’ve heard horror stories about these replacement gears, and decided to take the risk myself. Question of the day: What is your best Bachmann experience?
Colby’s Project Bin: A Bunch Of New HO Scale Models!
Просмотров 19914 дней назад
Today I have another episode of my project bin, the series where I go over any projects or acquisitions which didn’t make it into their own video. Today it’s mostly new models, as I’ve been busy with college. There’s ho scale steam locomotives, cabooses, passenger cars, and even free model trains. Question of the day: should I keep the PRR consist or sell it?
My Bachmann Spectrum 4-6-0: A Mildly Annoying HO Scale Steam Locomotive
Просмотров 35321 день назад
Today I talk about this Bachmann Spectrum 4-6-0, and why I’m not a huge fan of it. Keep in mind these are just my thoughts and it may just be this model, but I’ve had other issues with Bachmann in the past. I’ve actually had this locomotive for several months, and just now got around to filming a video on it. Question of the day: what good experiences have you had with bachmann locomotives?
Restoring an HO Scale Mantua Santa Fe F7
Просмотров 8921 день назад
Today I work on this Mantua Santa Fe F7 that I bought in a lot of HO Scale Locomotives for $40. This engine was very rough and needed a lot of soldering to run well. Question of the day: Should I replace this with a modern HO Scale Santa Fe F7?
I Bought A Pair of HO Scale Proto 2000 Baltimore And Ohio DCC Locomotives! Are They Any Good?
Просмотров 12328 дней назад
A while ago I bought these Ho Scale Proto 2000 Baltimore And Ohio FA2 and FB2 with dcc on eBay for a total of $150. I thought both had sound, but only the b unit does. This isn’t a huge issue, since the speaker location makes it sound like the A Unit has sound. Question of the day: are there any models I should sell?
Rebuilding An HO Scale Tyco Chattanooga
Просмотров 93Месяц назад
Today I work on my Tyco Chattanooga, which I failed to restore in a recent video. I took my Tyco Clementine’s drive system and swapped it into the Chattanooga as a simple repair, since I now have another Clementine in much nicer shape. Question of the day: do you think this was a fair end of the road for the tyco Clementine?
I Bought A Lot Of HO Scale Steam Locomotives For Only $20! Will Any Of Them Run?
Просмотров 678Месяц назад
Recently I was scrolling through eBay and found this lot of HO Scale Steam locomotives for only $20. I decided I needed it, and now it’s here. Some of these engines will be interesting projects themselves, and others might simply help complete projects.
Restoring An HO Scale Athearn Bluebox F2
Просмотров 170Месяц назад
Recently I got this Athearn Bluebox F2 in a lot of HO Scale Model trains off of eBay for $40. This locomotive is quite interesting, as the shell is from a Marx, and the chassis is from an Athearn. The engine’s restoration went without a hitch, in large contrast to my last restoration. Question of the day: is this an engine I should keep or sell?
Can I Fix This Problematic HO Scale Tyco Chattanooga?
Просмотров 85Месяц назад
Today I work on this HO Scale Tyco Chattanooga 0-8-0 steam locomotive that I got in a lot of model trains a while ago. This engine is in quite rough shape, and the pivots broke as I was working on it. Question of the day: do you want to see me use the leftover parts of the engine to cosmetically restore my Tyco Clementine?
HO Scale Restoration: Life Like GP38-2!
Просмотров 79Месяц назад
Today I work on this HO Scale Life Like GP38-2 model train that I bought in a lot of more model trains in a recent video. I swapped the shell with a GP60 shell, simply since it looked better. Question of the day: should I buy a proto 2000 GP60?

"Ground control to uncle tom" 🎵🎵😂😂
Those 2-6-0's are German.
POLA Water tower/sanding deot, and Coaling tower for steam locos. The water tower by itself may be Tyco-pola.
Plus I want the Dewitt Clinton and John bull
I wish I got that lot I would love the Hogwarts and Thomas and Percy
I am your 85th like a new 33rd comment
Pretty cool Haul The pulpwood car and that tanker for Texaco those are tycos I know that for a fact. I had the Dewitt Clinton back in the day that was a neat little thing a thing always ran too. Like you mentioned some of those bachmann steamers they did have some trouble back in the day.
Wow, you are one lucky young man or some one has really blessed you; the latter, perhaps. I have a lot of the older LifeLike and Tyco freight cars I cut off all the truck mounted couplers (talgo trucks) and body mounted Kadee couplers. Then I changed all the plastic wheelsets to Walthers Proto 2000 metal wheelsets with metal axles. Think I ended up doing around 75 to 80 pieces and weathered them as I went. Took several hundred dollars and about six or so weeks. I've got two of those Mantua 4-6-2 Pacific engines I repainted and decaled for the Central of Georgia since I used to live in Jonesboro, GA. I also replaced the magnets with neodymium (rare earth) magnets and it made a HUGE difference in current draw and performance. Did that to all my Pittman (open frame) motors. A tip on the Bachman 4-4-0 American Standard Jupiter engine, don't run it for any length of time pulling a few cars as it is tender driven and as soon as the motor heats up the drive will begin to slip on the shaft and the engine will stop until it cools enough for the plastic to re-grab the metal shaft. You might want to super glue the plastic drive gear to the shaft before running it. That's what I did. God be with you in your college pursuit. From the looks of your long fingers you would make a very good guitar player. Hopefully your college endeavors include music. Cheers from eastern TN
I’ve also got a whole bunch of these old freight cars, and while I’ve upgraded some to kadees, body mounted couplers, and metal wheels, I don’t have a huge need for every single car. I also use neodymium magnets on all my open frame motors and I quite like it. I’ve found that they even work well to reduce current draw on the old tyco powertorque when placed outside the block, and even makes them run significantly better. I haven’t heard that about the Jupiter before, that is a good tip to know.
2:28 Ouch 😬
Could I buy the Bachman Percy from you? Also maybe the Union Pacific ore car?
I only sell my models in person, on the occasions that I do sell them
Lucky bro. I'm jealous . Keep being awesome. I love trains just like u . Trains for Life
Smt mainline jr
9:30 I have a few of those Tyco Santa Fe F units, the Santa Fe logos on the front of mine were literally just decals that peeled off, so that’s likely what happened to this one
The odd thing is there’s no evidence of any decal ever existing there, and the engine seems to look brand new
Yeah, it’s like that with mine too, the decals literally just slid right off one day as if they were just stickers
It would be really cool if I got a massive free HO scale train lot
Wow a free HO train lot sounds amazing looks like Christmas came early for you
Often they appear at the most random times through the year
Wow for free, super jelly
How q-p i want free ho stuff
Usually it’s just luck, but what I’ve gotten a bunch from in the past is simply knowing other model railroaders
Do you have A Layout?
Not a great one. Currently my one functional layout is that 3 track loop, but in the future I have an older layout that I want to tear down and rebuild once I complete some of my other projects and have a break from college, so hopefully in the next year or so I’ll have one again.
Omg colby hair reveal
FREE. Nice haul
this should be handy fro me, just got both these guys
19:15 those bachmann old time sets are sometimes grabbed up by ON30 modelers for their motorized critters
I’ve heard that, although their drives can be unreliable. I sort of hope more manufacturers make small motorized units like these to adapt to whatever model you want, because there isn’t much selection currently
@@ATDCC_Colby northwest short line and SPUDS were one option. but when they find these bachmann sets for cheap (under 50) they will grab. Although I have heard that the 44 tonner uses motor trucks and may be a neat thing to try for that
12:45 is most probably an advertiser car. Special painted cars for a company used to advertise their brand. There are ones for stores, food brands, (I have 2 Campbell soap trains) or some company (ever see a century21 set?) There are also holiday sets as well. Might want to research because some are rare (Paul Revere blue tyco box car is one, asking is 200)
I’ve got a bunch of these advertiser cars, the weird thing about this one in particular is that it’s a 60’ boxcar, not a normal 50’. I just haven’t heard of 60 foot boxcars before and it’s an obscure piece
@@ATDCC_Colby I have seen that car before
I have a true value hardware reefer lol
@@owenmccarthy2521 I got a snap on train set
5:30 coal loading tower for steam engines, several designs, older are wood , newer ones were concrete.
5:15 is a sanding facility, older design, oldest would not have the silver tower. This is deigned for steam engines (water tower) The oldest design would have a rope and bucket to add sand to loco
9:10 is a covert car, 3 white water coverts come with it. designed to be used with tyco covert loader action set
Is the headlight burned out on the locomotive?
Yes. It’s a bachmann that as converted to dc from dcc (which I no longer own) and for bachmann, the headlight doesn’t work for whatever reason if you remove the decoder and install the dc jumpers.
well done. good info.
A Fine Class B Shay. Me personally, I say shay locomotives are Great.
Can you add a link to the gears you ordered?
These are the ones I used, however they only work on the later engines, the earlier GS4’s have a different design: www.ebay.com/itm/194949422697?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=F9DqaOPgTvy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=ap1dkis5qw-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
nice fix
I can not stand those Bachmann split frames
They are absolutely problematic, but this one (and it’s been a month since I’ve filmed this) had been problem free since it was repaired.
4:21 you should put a decoder in that engine, It would look nice.
When in doubt, take odorless mineral spirits and lots of Q- Tips and thoroughly cean all wheels on any used engine which you acquire before you start complaining about performance. Might also want to implenent a serious monthly cleaning program for all your track. Just don't use Isopropyl alcohol or the"everbrite" claning pads.
All of the engine wheels were in fact cleaned thoroughly several times before finally filming a video with the thing, and with many different wheel cleaning methods tested. The rails hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned the times I took the thing to the club, but this engine stalled constantly in areas that my dcc tyco 0-4-0 (which has no form of keep alive) had minimal struggles with. I highly doubt it was the engine wheels since I cleaned all of them each time I ran the thing and tried different methods of cleaning them, and I highly doubt it was the track since engines with smaller wheelbases encountered less issues than this thing. I’ve encountered dirty wheels and dirty trackwork before, neither of those are any significant factor with this particular engine’s performance.
Where did you get this model? its a nice one.
It is not mine, it’s owned by a club member who apparently has connections to stadler
I don't like Bachmann and never will. I'm 73 and have been a model railroader since the mid 1980's. I've scraped more Bachmann engines than I care to remember. Split frames and split gears are a trademark of Bachmann. Cheers from eastern TN
Luckily we’re out of the split chassis era now, but I still generally find issues to some degree with a lot of them
Good looking engine. I run n scale and only have one Bachman steam engine that I won. It runs pretty good but I have heard so many people complain about them that I would not buy one. Thanks for sharing. Dave
I had so much trouble with my 0-4-0 due to the way it picks up the power, these seem different but mine has a thick copper wire that just barley touches the wheel on each side and positioning it correctly was such a pain
Good job, thanks for sharing. Dave
You could be the first to start off the 'LITTLE BOY CHALLENGE". Most railroaders are tired of the Big Boy.
That does actually seem like an interesting idea, but I don’t know what exactly the ‘challenge’ would be. I’ve got a big boy, and I think they’re a bit over hyped. I’ve also got a bunch of small steamers so doing something with them and the big boy somehow could be interesting.
I think you did pretty good there, Colby! When I saw the thumbnail for this video my first thought was "I hope the gears aren't cracked." It seems to be a common issue with the Proto 2000's. Nothing that a young man with your skills can't handle, though! 👍 I imagine that the previous owner needed to remove the weight from the B unit to make room for the speaker. In his best Don Corleone (Google that name if your not familiar with it) voice: "Colby, ya done good."
Luckily I’ve just replaced all my cracked gears and it’s turned out well, now I have a caboose on the way for the pair
Varney F2 Bluebox chassis
Yeah, after filming I found several online. I thought it was a Marx shell at first since I’ve had a few, but at the time I didn’t realize varney ever made F2’s
Great job! Thanks for sharing. Dave
No but seriously how the heck do you keep finding all this stuff for less than 50 bucks
Luck, I guess
5:29 reminds me Puffa from Tugs
6:43 These locomotives were similar to the life like tea kettles they never ran really good out of the factory I would argue they were even more unreliable than 90s bachmann I like the old time looking 040 and 060
Those odd model power 2-6-0’s also had really bad gear issues, however I think one of them might have good gears so I will try and get them to run again
looks like you got some nice engines to work on. i have both the aristocraft engines as well. hope you can get your 0-4-0 motor to run. can't wait to see all the repair and maintenance videos!
This video made me realize the War Thunder train is pulled by an F2
