Magnetic Attachment compatible with WorkSharp Precision Adjust
Folks, something I did not fully cover in the video. If your knife does not have a flat area (grind plane that is parallel to the attachment) to sit on the magnet, there are some additional considerations to setting angle. As if your knife were to have a beveled grind. Contact me on Etsy if you need help with this.
Instructional video for the latest version of the Magnetic attachment. This attachment is compatible with the Worksharp Precision Adjust. This version features an updated blade fence compared to the version seen in my previous video.

    Hi Thank you for your good video, how long does this knife sharpener usually work? And after how long should it be replaced? Question 2: I do not have an electronic angle meter, and without using an electronic angle meter, how do we know what angle number to use for each type of knife, such as 15 degrees or 17 degrees or 20 degrees or 25 degrees or 30 degrees?

    Fortunately, I had the opportunity to try a lot of different systems, from different manufacturers, but the difference between them is very big, especially because of the materials used. Unfortunately, absolutely all sharpening systems that contain plastic, plastic components or other flexible, elastic, soft materials also have a very large margin of error, regardless of how different and well attachments we put on it and regardless of what upgrades we make, we don't get anything more until we eliminate absolutely all plastic. For a perfect sharpening, only need a solid, rigid, well-anchored and balanced system, for a stable, well-centered angle, which will remain perfectly centered throughout the sharpening process. NOT plastic components that buckle, swing, move eccentrically in all directions, and especially that over time lose their parameters and tolerances becoming wide and unstable. Rather than buying a system like this that is so fragile, and upgrading it by investing in other components, it is better to buy from the beginning a better system as HAPSTONE RS which I think is the best and most stable system possible for its price, because is completely metal and very solid and well balanced, or a more budget system fom TSprof such as Blitz or Kadet which is also completely metal and very solid and well balanced, and much higher performing options, because on the Work Sharp systems, both Lite and even the Pro version, errors cannot be eliminated with any kind of upgrade, as long as the system still contains plastic. I own both systems and have done a lot of upgrades with metal components from HAPSTONE, Kak Britva, TSprof, with connectors, clamps, magnets, etc. but as long as the chassis, the support, is made of plastic, it remains fragile and unstable for ever

    Hmm... the issue I see with that magnet setup is the centerline of the blade (spine to edge) isn't parallel with the angle gauge because of the hollow grind, so the actual grind angle is going to be steeper than what the gauge says. The OEM clamp would be more likely to hold it so those lines are parallel.

    • @Practical3DP
      @Practical3DP Год назад

      There are ways to compensate. You can use the front fence to make the blade parallel. Alternatively, you can subtract the angle of the primary bevel.

    • @Practical3DP
      @Practical3DP Год назад

      What exactly do you mean by stiffness?

  • @2873lonewolf
    @2873lonewolf Год назад

    Just to note, when measuring your sharpening angle, you should be zeroing your gauge on table top, not on blade as in video. If you zero on blade, you are subtracting the flat grind of blade from your angle and not sharpening to the angle you check on rod. Example: The flat of blade is ground at 5 degrees. You zero on blade and set your sharpening angle at 15 degrees. You really are putting a 20 degree edge on your blade.

    • @Practical3DP
      @Practical3DP Год назад

      Thank you for pointing that out. I forgot to mention that the fence on the front can be used to level a knife that has a flat grind. You can simply bring the blade up 5 degrees to take out the guess work. Although, I don't think your example tells the full story. First, lets zero the angle cube on either the attachment or the work table, as this should already be close to 0. Then set your angle with the cube to say 20 degrees. Now imagine a plane that goes from the center of the spine to the apex of the knife. This should also be 0 degrees and ideally what you base your angle off of. So if this said knife has a primary grind of 5 degrees, your center line is now tilted downwards by 5 degrees once you place the knife on the magnet. So really if your angle cube says 20 degrees, you should subtract 5 for a true sharpening angle of 15 degrees on relative to the knifes center line.

    Apparently, he does NOT know about angles, establishment of angles and what are the factors in changing angles. Moving the edge, relative to the contact point of the the rod -- its contact point (in space) most definitely changes the angle of the stone relative to the blade cutting edge angle. Also, remember that the whole point of being able to rotate the entire knife through the push-button on the back of the stone/rod holder is one of the hallmarks of this Worksharp system.

    • @Practical3DP
      @Practical3DP Год назад

      I know that this is not a perfect replacement for the rotating mechanism. However, the stock clamp does not fit well on all types of pocket knives. That’s what this is for. It’s very possible to use this and get a sharp knife. Myself and many others have done it. It does take a little effort but after you know what your doing you can get repeatable results. You have to develop a technique depending on the blades. Also, I have updated the fence to make alignment easier.

  • @YouSoundButtHurt

    Hi Seth. I bought your new version and I have a question about the angle meter. Do I still zero it on the base of the attachment or on the blade itself? If I place it on the blade and zero it, I run out of adjustment on the worm drive. The blade is beveled so it's not a flat surface. What do you recommend?

    • @Practical3DP
      @Practical3DP Год назад

      There are different mounting positions on the attachment. So you can raise or lower it on the arm. This allows for more angle range. Also you can use the front fence to tilt the blade upwards. This isn’t necessary though. For the angle. Since your blade has a big primary bevel that will attach to the magnet, follow this procedure. Zero on the attachment itself. Next place the gauge on the primary bevel on the knife. Take note of the angle. For this example, let’s say 10 degrees. Now, you want your knife to have a 15DPS edge bevel. Place the gauge on the sharpening rod. Adjust the WS so it says 25 degrees. You’re doing this to compensate for the primary bevel and will have a true edge bevel of 15DPS or 30 inclusive. If you have more questions please contact me on Etsy. That way I can show you illustrations.

I was looking at this item myself because of the base price but after adding up all the upgrades to try and make it a decent sharpener you are at the price of a KME Sharpeners. I ended up going with the KME and calling it good. The magnet base your demonstrating looks somewhat sketchy safety wise. Its good your thinking outside the box though. I would say never give up but on the Worksharp I would say its time to tap out.

      I think a knife of that size is beyond the capabilities of the Worksharp PA in general. I’m not sure if there is enough stone throw to cover a 10” blade? I cannot say if it would work as I don’t have one like that to test. I designed this with EDC folding knives in mind. I think additional magnets would be required for a blade that size.
