String Trio, Los Angeles 1946 - Movses Pogossian, Kim Kashkashian, Rohan de Saram
String Trio, Los Angeles 1946 is a film about the influential 20th century composer and teacher Arnold Schoenberg. In August of 1946, Schoenberg's heart stopped beating. While recuperating, he composed a 19-minute trio for violin, viola, and cello-music in which he attempted to portray his close brush with death. It is a piece widely regarded today as a masterpiece of the 20th century repertoire. The film includes Schoenberg's children Nuria, Ronald, and Lawrence, relating memories of their father, and concludes with a complete performance of the String Trio, filmed at Schoenberg's Los Angeles home. Directed by David Starobin.

🙏❤🍀☀
i had no idea Mr. Crumb performed any of his pieces live! he was a damn good percussionist, it looks like.
What a superb documentary. The String Trio performance was beautiful and very touching. Bravo!
Beautifully done! What a great look into his life and music! Wonderfully put together and edited.
The Ives Violin Sonata is mis-identified. It is actually Sonata no. 1. Otherwise, a wonderful film full of material I had not previously encountered.
Absolutely correct! Thanks for pointing it out.
Great piece!! They should play this at the White House. Very patriotic. Makes me proud to be American.
I miss hearing you in person. Where? In NYC area. 🌾☘️🥀🌱🌻
Thank you so much for making available this combination of informative documentary with such a wonderful, sensitive performance of this masterwork.
Thanks to my staff for getting the corrected version of the film up!
I wonder if he knew Michael Tippett, whose Symphony no. 3 is on the same wavelength as this Overture.
I love Carter and Tippett. Great classical music is based on polyphony with long melodic lines, fast harmonic rhythm, and a strong sense of pulse. I would say this applies also to Ravel and Bartok, and also to bebop music. One hears this vividly in the music of both Carter and Tippett, and for Carter even in his later atonal music in which multiple pulses overlap.
So very beautiful, thank you. 🌷🌷🌷 (Holland-eu)
What an unique and great Piano-Man Vassily Primakov is. 🌷🌷🌷 (Holland)
Very nice, thank you! I also love this ballade interpreted by Alexei Sultanov!
It’s too big to play in tune.

The only instrument that I truly coveted was an Amati owned by Colin Hampton of Berkeley, Ca. And later owned by his wife, Bonnie. What a sound, incomparable.

Just marvelous! Thank you!
Beautiful. I always tell people that the cello is my voice.
Spectacular 😮
Bravi !! Das ist fantastisch :)
It’s a very good perfomance the ending is just to anticlimatic for me, this inspired me though
The primary attraction of this music may be in the sheer sound of the instruments, at least at first; but for some reason it transcends a mere effort to coax us into believing that it is a meaningful, positive statement, that reason being simply that it is one, and that it never needed to convince us of the fact. And if you can believe that, you can also believe that I believe that it never tries to. It is an interesting and fascinating work.
I followed his emotions as close as listening to the piece he played.... What a connection!
If one has heard Cherkassky, Richter, Horowitz ...even Gould......this is rather crude
Fantastic!
I have never heard this piece before, but I must say, I think this version of the original is exceptionally well-done here. Or, at least, I assume that this is what the original sounded like.
Love this recording so much
IMHO no great ideas here. He (like many-may others) doesn't understand the subtle syntax of this musical text. A generic “sweet” touch of garnish, but nothing “revealed”. Clean but superficial...
Great music. All the signposts are there. Great recording…
I have heard many performances of Chopin's Ballade No. 1 and Primakov's is by far one of the very best, deeply thought through, incredibly sensitive, full of passion, tragic, yearning, fury, beyond what words can say. Thank you Vassily.

Vassily is one of the best pianists in our time! We discovered him 15 years ago and he is true wonder! Vassily, please do more recordings and videos!
Remarkable in many respects. Yet - it feels like every note is a separate funeral - and the flow and momentum somehow gets lost because of the intense foreground focus. Just an opinion...
I've experienced this man's live performances in his early 20's as a student at the Music Academy of the West, in Santa Barbara...& I've NEVER forgotten it/him. He is one of the most phenomenal musicians I've ever witnessed...or the better word is 'experienced'. Period...& I've witnessed most of the greats. I'm just thankful there's something on utube that gives us a chance to relive what is seared in my mind...although there's still nothing like being in the same room/hall/space when he's LIVING & BREATHING every composition he seems to be channeling through every single cell in his body.
Thanks for your unbelievable note! Vassily is a genius!

This by far, in my opinion, is the best interpretation of this piece.

I don't belive it, 400 years musical instrument rubbish
That cello is older than the country I live in, that's so wild.
💎
No mention was made that the cello is not in its original condition. It has a modern set-up: longer more angled neck (with the original scroll/peg box spliced onto the new neck), modern bridge, longer fingerboard, 20thc. metal strings, end-pin, modern Tourte bow, etc. Originally, all the strings were plain gut - there were no metal wound gut strings until towards the end of the 17thc. This is a bass violin rather than a 'violoncello' - a term coined c.1700 when smaller instruments were developed by Stradivarius and others. The instrument would originally sounded very different, with no expectation of playing higher than 4th position - if that.
Oh my! How this makes me love the guitar! Thanks!
RIP Ann Crumb
We "tried" to play this one Christmas in my community symphony. Emphasis on "tried".
I found Amati.2012 model sacconi.asking opinion I truly love way yours sound
