So sick. So continuously creative and inventive. Ok, that is redundant, but Frank is not. This is 4 minutes of pure genius to be preserved for the ages. Frank played this live at Lincoln Center outdoors about 10-15 years ago and it was just as brilliant. I spoke to the recording engineer that day, so I know that recording and more of this configuration are in the ether. Chick's estate is very selective. Here's hoping they highlight this further.
When people remember Frank solos only by its fast lightning arpeggios and picking, let's remember this one... Building from few and perfectly put melodies, minutes bringing new ideas and variations with no need of repetitive shredding. This is Frank Gambale guys, he is a freaking universe of rich ideas and powerful expression
The problem that i find with Vai is that his music revolves solely around his playing and everyone else on the tracks is basically background. John doesn't do it that way. John always writes the material for the musicians and he allows there to be a lot more interaction and involvement from each player to take the framework of the composition and sculpt it into a performance where each performance is different from the next. McLaughlin also blends more styles and doesn't play inside a box.
My god who is this piano player!!??
