A short video demonstrating a RAM upgrade on a Thinkpad T61 laptop.
Many thanks for this -- 3 years after you published it. I have many older ThinkPads and consider the T420 to have been the last of the really traditional high quality ones before the Chiclet keyboard change. For some reason, my actual IBM T61 became the control machine for my audio editing and archive work hooked up to some very high-end equipment. This was probably originally because I only needed a narrow range of functions and had, in any case, upgraded the CPU when it was first acquired. Now that I am doing intensive archive work I have found just why the old machine is so very good for the job. It is because it is electrically and electronically a thoroughbred with no ambient noises and current deviations. No modern ThinkPad, Mac, Dell, MSI or 'bare bones' specialist build gets close to the integrity of my T61. I landed on your site because I had forgotten the screw layout for RAM attention and am delighted that I did. Subscribed.

With Middleton's BIOS T61 support Core 2 Duo X9000 plus 2x 4gb ddr2/800 ram!
Fast forward 10 minutes to get to the part where he opens the laptop and starts working on it. Otherwise good video.
What is the highest processor it supports
Just bought 4gb of ram and a t9500 for my old beast and it only cost me 17 bucks for both. I dont use this unit that often but it would be nice to have one that I con mount to the dash in my vehicle and use for ODBII info and whatnot. Thanks man! I did not know if this had a soldered CPU or not and now I have my answer.
I recently did the same thing, but installed a T7800 processor which runs at 2.60 GHz. I also installed an SSD and Middleton's BIOS which has removes the whitelist so you can install a faster WIFI card (currently I have an AC-7260), and the BIOS removes the SATA restriction to allow for SATA II speeds.
Hey mate. I have a t61. Just installed 2gb ram, 1tb SSD and a t7800. What's all this bios hack ? How do I do that mate? 😊
Can we upgrade with i3 or can you suggest a good procccer
This laptop only takes core 2 duo CPUs, not an i3. The fastest chips that will work in it (unless you're willing to extensively mod it) are the T9xxx series (C2D T9300, T9500 etc.) I think the T9300 is the highest end chip that makes sense for this laptop, since faster models are very expensive still.

@@EwanA The GPU is soldered on in this laptop, it can't be upgraded unfortunately.

No, the socket is too old. For an i5, you will need an i5 era laptop.
