Protestors came in peace, but didn't left
If I want heartwarming I’ll take his concertgqbouw readings. This is Mahler for the fun and for the car trips. Lean mean gewandhaus sporting Heavy metal fff horn passages and special guest homelander playing on tympani make for a great laugh. I freakin’ love it but I wouldn’t want to be married to it. But it’s great for a certain mood.
Those snares in the beginning are no joke
reminds me of La Martyre de Saint Sebastian, Debussy
My favourite recording by a country mile!
I had this recording on cassette (it also had Berlioz & Tchaikovsky)and I wore it out. Thanks for posting ❤
Superb performance of this towering, profound masterpiece.
I finally get it. Mahler's 9th. It's all about joy. The joy of learning to let go.
One of the finest ever recordings of this fabulous piece - Haitink was a superb Straussian
Bernstein' s rendition is even slower...go and listen to it before telling bullshit about the most profound conductor ever : KLEMPERER
Beautifully evocative and haunting ❤
This is the best performance ever
my mom, jean mitchell was in the cello section and step father, lucien, played in the viola section. thank you, mom and luc! i remember coming home at christmas from music school at the new school of music in philadelphia listening to this gorgeous recording! i was soooo proud o' my parents! seiji was the first one to introduce us to sushi. he invited the families back stage 4 sushi after a concert. thanx to seiji i've been a japanophile e'er since. i've na'er heard a better performance than this!!! thank you, seiji!!!
Surely the best performance. Beecham was also very good as often with RPO or french orchestra. But, Silvestri recording is such technically top and played. For me, it's the reference since sixtied. Jarvis is wonderful of musicality.
I have got two versions of this work in own Record Collection, the famous Sir Thomas Beecham and the Royal Philharmonic, and this one,and both of them are very good and the Engineers at[EMI]Certainly knew what they were doing, and I've got quite a few of Constantine Silvesry's Recording's more so his famous 1960 Recording of the Beetoven Violin Concerto which he made with Yehudi Menuhin ASD-377 a first Pressing Stereo and it was such a shame that he died at such a young age 55 in 1969 but atleast we have got his Gramophone Recording's so the General Public can still listen to his fine Playing🎉
Stokowski met Mahler during the rehearsals for the world premiere of the 8th Symphony in Munich in 1910, and he gave a live performance of the 2nd Symphony in 1971, and made a studio recording a few years after. So he seems to be the last conductor who met Mahler and gave performances of this Symphony after Klemperer.
❤
It would be cool if this was in the movie anastasia
You can hear the chaos, the running, the screams of despair, the melody of horror. Gosh I love Shostakovich!!
a pug spoke that.
So indeed they used that AH flag...
Excellent! Thanks!
OK the Rondo Burleske is also perfectly played - it makes some other performances sound tentative and weak by comparison. it is astonishing. just driving forward, with exactly the kind of frenzy. i love the trombone prominence and also the utter accuracy and swagger of their playing. this is true virtuosity at a collective level. i can't believe how much of the actual music i am hearing. i am reading the score and he is having the players seemingly follow every little marking to the letter and also getting all the sudden off-beat entries absolutely "on". i cannot thank you enough for this.
and good god "Mit WUT!" indeed in that first movement - the playing is exactly what I have wanted to hear in this section. in fact the whole "allegro" side of this first movement is played with the vehemence and intensity that is lacking in nearly all other versions i have heard. it is analytical, clear, precise, but also deeply expressive. it outdoes even my previous benchmarks. it is the most perfectly played and "together" version I have ever come across. what people thought Boulez achieved but I don't think did at all. this is what i have always imagined reading this music on the page. most conductors change tempo to some extent, some extremely so, at the "du aber Mensch" theme on p28 of the Dover score but Chailly lets it still read as "heroic" and energetic
it's even better than the Concertgebouw one! i know from many musicians I have spoken to that the piece is difficult to play. the rhythmic language is almost like Schonberg or Berg sometimes (indeed I think their way of writing comes from these late Mahler works). this is utterly confident and secure playing with excellent ensemble and also a rhythmic precision that just makes the textures clear and allows you to hear all the interplay. it is the most beautiful and moving of all symphonies in my view, was my mother's favourite musical work, this first movement in particular. the harp, clarinet, viola arpeggiated figures in semiquavers on page 6 of the Dover score are so beautifully clear and meaningful, i never hear them in other recordings. i love being able to hear what i see on the page, this performance does that. thank you so much for posting this. my new favourite performance.
Great phrasing and richness of sound by Martinon, but a bit "light" performance.
I prefer the playing of the ORTF to the perfect but laminated one of the CSO.
This version is outstanding. Thank you!
I was privileged to be at the Royal Festival Hall when Otto Klemperer conducted Mahler's 2nd Symphony (I think it was the 20th May 1971 performance). Klemperer was by then very frail - he was helped on the the platform and conducted, seated at a desk. At one time Klemperer lowered his baton and seemed to be taking a little rest. The music, however was just superb - it was wonderful to watch and listen to a friend of Mahler conducting the great man's music. A concert never to be forgotten and this recording brings back so many memories. As the last notes of that tremendous 5th movement died away there was complete silence from the audience for around five seconds - something that, sadly rarely occurs today.
I was at that concert too with my Jesuit priest friend and girlfriend at the time. She burst into tears of emotion at the end. The most moving concert i have ever been to and since that time i have probably been to over 500 classical concerts.
the best interpretation of this symphony, IMHO
Excellent ❤

Wow
Solti was such a great conductor before his Chicago days!
Ullmann was a great composer.
Winning!
It was the 80th anniversary last Tuesday of the first performance. I would love to have been in St Petersburg that day to see the commemorative recital.
didn't you all think, you dont know whats really happening
His conduct was very unique and thrilling. Bournemouth s.o has been a very exellent and high-quality sounded orchestra.

Didn't the remains arrive in Vienna on 4 July?

It saddens me to think that the Russians are doing the same or even worse to the Ukrainians than the Germans did to them during WW2.
