    @percy... ...without the pedals frequently stretching and loosening the strings as they change pitch there is less string degradation so on a chromatic harp there can be less total tuning needed. A nice side benefit of not needing to have a single string substitute for 3 separate notes as on the pedal harp.

    To Percy but also to Jim one of the strengths of this harp is that you don't have to worry about the pedal or lever mechanism being slightly off in adjustment. You can actually have a more exact and predictable tuning and the maker of Paola's harp went even further with its own patented microtuners. Some versions of this instrument also contained mechanisms to give the reference pitch for tuning. Once you understand the system for how the strings are arranged and patterns for fingering it actually is quite understandable how to play the instrument. I will say without machinery to substitute it requires more human engagement. The neat thing is that humans have more capacity than they normally use.

    Mes plus émues félicitations et remerciements, Paola. Je poursuis modestement l’oeuvre de Gustave Lyon en inventant, en 2013, une harpe chromatique permettant de réaliser des portamentos. Je l’ai jouée pendant un an, de 2013 á 2014, puis abandonnée pour raison familiale jusqu’á cette année. La découverte de vos performances me remplit d’émotion et me donne du courage pour poursuivre mes recherches avec l’espoir, un jour, de pouvoir présenter ma harpe au public. Elle est avant tout destinée á la musique classique de l’Inde du Nord, mais peut s’adapter á d’autres styles, comme le blues. Encore merci.

      Actually Jim she is one of the last instructors of the performance technique developed from the French and Belgian schools left in the world. Culturally she's probably the most important person left and honestly should be designated a UNESCO cultural heritage resource. After her players of this harp will be largely trying to reinvent the wheel and work from manuscripts that have been written.

    why this kind of harp was forgotten instead of pedal harp ?

    • @benbrown8258
      @benbrown8258 3 года назад

      In short 1st: it was seen as a competitor for harp employment. Truth was/is the cross strung harp is not a full 'plug and play' replacement for the pedal harp. Some music for pedal harp works very well on the Pleyel. Such music also includes 'pianistic' works that many pedal harpists find less comfortable to execute. Having said that, the potential of the Pleyel chromatic harp format has had less resources devoted to really mining its potential. There is much to be discovered even above the repertory available to it now. 2nd: economic conditions. There was only one maker of the concert cross strung chromatic harp, Pleyel. With the destruction of infrastructure during and after World War II, difficult economic conditions, plus being seen as something to be swept under the rug, this concert harp did not have enough support to viably afford rebuilding the Pleyel harp factory and economically survive. The last production Pleyel was made in the 1930's. Forgotten...Part One. The importance of videos like this one demonstrates the last cultural proof of the ability of this harp during its initial (golden age) development. Grove's Dictionary of Music stated in the 1980's, the tone of this harp was poor and the technique to play it was exceedingly difficult [read: more difficult to learn than pedal harp technique]. The conclusion was it made sense no performance harpists would specialize in this harp. Truth is - there is formal music; chamber, orchestral and other venues, written for many different instruments lutes to harmonicas. It is just as possible to have a concert performance career on this harp especially if not seen as a competitor to be culled. In Europe several operas and orchestras employed harpists performing on the Pleyel chromatic harps into the 1970's and later! Forgotten Part Two... Actually, there is a revival of sorts for the format of this harp in the form of smaller sized versions having three to five octaves. Admittedly, there are tonal quality and technical differences, but these small harps are an adaptation that has allowed it to proliferate in the number of hundreds world wide. In a perfect world, much like the desperate race to study and save indigenous languages around the world by working with and documenting native speakers, we would invest in learning all we possibly could from the remaining examples of the original Pleyel teachers and the best of their students to save what is known about performance level skills. In the world we live in, though, the discovery of any and all cross strung format harps being played and enjoyed is a triumph of sorts against it being totally forgotten. If economic conditions and competition for employment encouraged pressure toward its demise, perhaps becoming more ubiqutous and non threatening might allow it to survive until its value is more fully appreciated. At that point advanced performance skills might be redeveloped. The documentation here, in this video, leaves a legacy of proof against erasure of what had been achieved.

      @@benbrown8258 also the drudgery of tuning 74 strings and the expense to stringing them might have had an impact, not to mention the eye strain of having to focus on the cross stringing. I was amazed by how wonderful the chromatic harp is. Hearing truly chromatic music on the harp blows my mind! Of course the harp was famous for all those 6th chord glissandos which one would miss...and the solos which have glissando's and harmonics at the same time.....

    • @benbrown8258
      @benbrown8258 Год назад

      @@jimbuxton2187 I might agree having all new strings on a chromatic might take longer to tune. But not stretching and relaxing the strings with pedals or levers would leave a chromatic harp less likely to need returning. That would be especially true once the harpstrings have settled in

    • @benbrown8258
      @benbrown8258 Год назад

      As for eye strain your brain is wonderfully designed to become more efficient by accommodation. It's not an instant process and it does take a bit of time and it can vary from person to person. So what can seem initially distracting with practice and time and familiarity ceases to be.

    Reply to Samulis Augustus1 year ago Samuel, I knew of a church in Grand Rapids, Michigan that wanted the sound of a glissando on the harp so badly and that was the "only" important thing they knew about the harp. They didn't want anything else because expectations had been set so low. They purchased what was then an $11,000.00 harp and had someone who had never played harp before learn how to set pedals and play the "harp" sound in 4 lessons for their orchestral piece. Yes glissandii are a valid part of pedal harp performance, but to say all music depends on them seems as deep as my friend's demand that is all a harp should be. A harp, whether pedal, or chromatic cross strung is more than a sterotype. Paola plays with exceptional skill which is worthy of regard and can answer questions by those who have never studied or played the instrument. Interestingly though, Risler, who founded the Belgium school is rumored to have expected his students to play glissandi in more than the obvious three on a chromatic. I've seen the music for it, but can't imagined the technical execution.

      +c33r0k33 Excellent observation and thank you. I have learned something new via your insight. "Glissando" ! Yes, she does indeed glide, sweetly. I am new to this sound and it is honey to my ears. I am so very grateful.

  • @SamGossner

    Very interesting, although I wonder if it is possible to play glissandi on this harp aside from just the default diatonic and pentatonic... I would think the loss of the infamous harp gliss would be enough reason for many composers to be wary of writing for it, even if they got an excuse to stop worrying about pedals.

    • @benbrown8258
      @benbrown8258 7 лет назад

      Very good call Sam. For some composers glissandi are the most important, sometimes only strength, they think the harp is capable of. Even the pedal harp has much more ability than glissandi and enharmonics. The cross strung harp definitely as demonstrated here has a natural strength. From triple strung to wire string, harps can have much music in common. That is a benefit to society, not a liability or threat any more than women are the ultimate expression of the universe rather than men. That's silly. We are best off when both exist, respected and valued though there are many overlapping abilities.
