The Unknown - Rememberance Weekend
THE UNKNOWN - REMEMBERANCE WEEKEND - Please spare a thought for THE UNKNOWN and listen to this short recording, starring SIR BILLY CONNOLLY, SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS, LIAM NEESAM and RALPH McTELL. The Allies lost over 6 million men during the First World War; the Central Powers lost 4 million. Of those, over 700,000 Allied soldiers were buried in ‘unknown’ graves. Over 620,000 for the Central Powers. That’s an ‘official’ total of over 1,320,000 men - there were many more!

As the First World War comes to a close, an idealistic British chaplain works to honour the men lost - especially those buried anonymously - by spearheading a campaign which has become a universal symbol of British unity and perseverance. Based on actual events, this remains the greatest myste...

❤
It's really a good song when someone else sings it.
O MAN, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this! WOW. What a gem! Anthony Newley: We all never really deserved ye ... - Cheers and have a wonderful 2025, - VCH & Midlantic Theatrre Co., Newark, NJ, USA 🤩💚💚💙🌲🌲🌲🌲
Bloody superb. Enough said!
Oh Gosh ! Genius and I see an echo in Tim Minchin
Mesmerizing! One of the all-time greats.
for me the song radiates a relationship with Jesus. who can I turn to if you turn away? amen.
David Bowie said that he consciously copied Newley's "eccentric" style of singing in his early career...
He had such a beautiful voice. What a performance!! I watch this video once a month. It makes me so happy.❤
I remember him on the Merv Griffin show many times, even with former wife Joan Collins. He did mention that he using his hands performing, led many to believe he was a feminine homosexual which probably hurt his success, unlike today, and he would have succeeded. Underrated all-around talent as singer, performer, actor, and song writer.
I had the pure joy and pleasure of actually meeting him and spending some time with him, and I will remember it always. There are no words to describe any further
A very underrated talent. A marvelous tenor(maybe a lyric baritone) with resonance like a bell and excellent vocal range . I got to see him at the Hollywood Bowl once in the 70's. He sang for two solid hours. He was also a terrific songwriter along with his partner Leslie Bricusse. RIP Mr Newley . You were a joy to watch !
I had the great good fortune to substitute usher in the theater where this show was playing for two weeks and got to see 16 performances! Never tired of watching him. Cyril Richard was also wonderful.
He was genius
My wife and I saw Anthony Newley at the Westbury Music Fair with Bob Newhart, sadly now both gone
Mr Newley wrote a wonderful song and then killed it with over dramatic pronunciation and over the top mock cockney and English accent ,perhaps he just couldn’t stop himself.
How little you know your Newley. That is ahis genuine East End Cockney accent. Mr. Newley was brought up in London's Hackney. He was English.
@@gmulvein as we’re so many of us and only he over works the accent to the point of mockery and pantomime for the role of cheeky cockney chap for the easily pleased.
Absolute jewell. Thank you so much for sharing .
I saw this show (Roar of the Greasepaint) in 1965 in NYC. It was my first date with a girl from college. We were at a Newman Club convention with 14 others from that college. Friday night came and all the guys I was with, at the Waldorf Astoria, where the convention was being held, left to go sight seeing. All the girls left her. All alone, we decided to go out together. We went to Mama Leone's for dinner and then to Broadway to watch a play. That play turned out to be "Roar of the Greaespaint." The song, "Who can I Turn To," became prophetic as we are still together 59 years later as husband and wife!
SO BEAUTIFUL. I was 14 when I saw it and think about it once a week.
Maybe tomorrow...? ❤
Marvellous ❤
an amazing artist
❤ The PlayBill is in the china cabinet ❤
Easy to see how with this man's talent he was able to co-write such iconic songs in a movie like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!
riveting, mesmerizing, electrifying . . . . absolutely remarkable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sadly, today the great Anthony Newley is either forgotten or remembered as Joan Collins husband, but he was one of the greatest entertainers Britain ever produced and a legend on Broadway. "Roar of the greasepaint" is a fabulous show and this song is one of the best Newley and Leslie Bricusse ever wrote.
A beautiful man with a beautiful heart. I remember watching this performance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965. I was 12 years old and have loved him ever since. So brilliant, yet so child like. Ed was certainly impressed.....so lovely. LOVE YOU FOREVER, ANTHONY.🥰🥰🥰
This I think is probably the single greatest performance by any artist I’ve ever seen.
Check out his performance of what kind of fool am I in a nightclub. It tops this one!
How does anyone find the words to describe that performance...I just know nothing else will ever measure up to this once in a lifetime ❤❤❤❤
Wow what a performance ,sad powerful, recalled my lovely wife, always together ,Someone to "guide me and someone beside me " So very true .....For all the lost dreams and special loves ... .
A great star wrote a classic tune still performed today. The Temps did a fantastic version of his composition.
I’ve watched this many times - such an incredible performance. I’ve shared it a LOT, and it’s not to everyone’s taste. Too mannered for some, and too emotionally vulnerable. Both of which are the reasons I love it, and come back to it again, and again, and again. Thank you Anthony for the spectacular and moving performance.
Anthony Newley, the GREATEST, love him!!!!! RIP Anthony Newley....
We will never see his like again !
What an amazing & special singer Anthony was! Very soon for "The Beat" music magazine I will write a great article about him and hopefully in early 2024 the editor David will put it in his monthly mag.!
Has anyone thought of reviving this musical on Broadway or maybe make a musical of Anthony Newley’s life? He was such a musical genius in my opinion and he and his partner wrote some beautiful and wonderful songs for both stage and screen.
It’s written. Just trying to find a TV production company prepared to produce it.
@@gmulvein No one will be able to play him well enough, though. -- Sigh. That's what always MAKES ME ABHOR biog.'s of showbiz legends. But: Cheers, mate; at least younger generations will know of him, that way ... Stay safe and well, xo, VCH & Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark, NJ, USA
@@gmulvein Maybe it's the right time for it now. Would be interested in watching it. He is such a good singer and writer. Got here through Joker Folie à Deux where Joaquin Phoenix sings Anthony's "The Joker" and sparked an interest for the origin of the song. Well, even before I realized, I was heading for the Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd
@@nebelparder9 Glad you found this!
It's got one of the most fabulous Broadway scores of all time, but unfortunately the book is just terrible. It needs total rewriting.
Remarkable, always ❤
fabulous...
He was genius true star I never get tired of watching this ❤
True Genius. He did it all. Composing/writing/singing/performing...still thrills to the bottom of my being. xoxo P
😢😢😢
Bowie’s role model, it is so easy to see
Guy is so overwhelmed with his own ego that it taints any "performance" he could conjure up. I don't know what these other people are seeing, but this guy, frankly, stinks!
he was great ... my hero
I saw this show (Roar of the Greasepaint) in 1965 in NYC, and still remember how moving it was.
For everyone here and now in 2023 all alone in a world where all has gone wrong and almost out of hope..inspire your self with this song for a brighter tomorrow ❤
Here in 2025!
Unique, not to be seen or heard again. Remember him so well.
Magnificent!!
Incredible! A musical genius no less! No words can describe what I felt while watching Anthony Newley's incomparable performance. A master class indeed!
❤😘
❤❤
He is one incredible performer...the world is so cold without you.
❤️❤️❤️ 😭😭😭 🙌🙌🙌
