Grab my new eBook, Necessarily Creative: book.scottmclemore.com Sometimes we can forget that the work we do is important. This week on Keep the Flow, I reflect ...

So amazing ❤❤❤
How do you approach staying inspired? I've included 3 suggestions to help us notice more. I'd love to hear more suggestions from you here:
'When Doves Cry' not 'When The Doves Cry '.Sorry but that was a sore thumb that got noticed.
You know, I debated that. I almost left out the “the” but then I sang the lyrics in my head. 😬
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail is such a powerful frame of mind. Glad I clicked your video.
Thanks a lot! I think I heard it from Tim Ferris or Ali Abdal. One of those guys.
This was incredibly helpful, I’m so used to getting stuck in my head when it comes to projects but this gave me a new perspective. Thank you 🙏🏾
Glad it was helpful! If you don’t mind my asking, what sort of projects are they?
@ ofc! I’m a beginner creative in filmmaking, scriptwriting and visual concepts. I’ve been in projects outside of myself but I’m currently working on building pieces for a portfolio to enroll into university. :)
Oh cool. Always interesting to see what kind of creatives are watching. Good luck with uni!
In this episode I give some example of the "right" questions. I would love you hear more ideas here. What do you ask to keep your creative process rolling?
Maybe, if you squint. 😂
Thanks. I’ll try that.
Does any of this make any sense? 🤔
Well said.
Thanks!
I’m not a musician, but this was helpful and resonated with me. Thank you. I have a concept I’ve been developing around IFS therapy which centers around the idea of building your party or crew. I use Captain Picard as a mental reference. He is an effective leader because he understands his crew and the mission. He works with the former to achieve the latter, and that’s the internal struggle we all face. I’d really been focusing on the internal crew dynamic and ignoring the “mission.” I don’t know if I’ll ever write this book, but if I do it will be better because of this.
I had to look up IFS to know what you were talking about. Sounds really interesting. I’m going to explore this more and look for parallels with creativity; if our inner crew members pull us in various creative directions. Good luck with the book!
@@KeeptheFlow_SM I could see using it to help self regulation and overcome creative blocks, but it may be like learning to patch a pothole by becoming a stone mason’s apprentice for the next 18 months. CBT therapy has a lot of practical uses and can be engaged with minimal risk or training. IFS requires psychoanalysis and pokes on sensitive parts, so I think it can be kind of inaccessible. I’d love an outsider’s take though, I’m far too immersed in the trees. The project I’ve been noodling on for over a year is an attempt to use the massive library of fictional characters many of us have and jumpstart this IFS parts work in an accessible and safe manner. A basic example would be identifying behavior as being associated with a threat response and trying to see it less as some internal problem or monster and instead see it as Worf, Han Solo, or RoboCop - a character that you know and love that gives you a framework for understanding the reaction you are having and, hopefully, controlling it.
Do you have any tricks for keeping your life in balance while being centered around creativity?
I'm sure there are more than 4 ways to stay creative when we're struggling. Do you have any suggestions?
I think you're good at this and I hope you keep doing it Scott!
Man, thanks so much. I’m trying to streamline it as much as possible. But it’s definitely more than I expected.
If you're a new RUclipsr and also have a video about your experience, please post it here in the comments. Or if you're thinking about starting a RUclips channel and are wondering about anything that I didn't cover, feel free to ask it here.
You boutta get your big break one day just keep working at it🔥
Thanks. That’s all we can do.
As I said in the video, new name ideas for my shortform video series are greatly appreciated. But also, when could you have used someone else's perspective on your work?
this popped up in my YT feed; these kinds of informational content, imo is what social media 'ideally' was designed to achieve. i'm in this subject matter quandary now as an independent singer/songwriter/musician/producer, so i'm strongly considering applying some of your ideas, kudos
This is so nice to hear. Thanks for the kind words. I’m really hoping to provide some sort of resource here and I suppose community for creative people like us. And please don’t let me give you the impression that I have it all figured out. I’m winging it like everyone else.
Brilliant podcast episode. I call myself a "creative worker", because even when I believe I've got "the creativity spark", I've been working in my creative skills since a very young age, and obviously still do that inner research constantly. Music, Movies, Literature (for me Ray Bradbury is a creativity beacon), all those elements come to mind in my creative processes. Random people in the streets, my cats driving me crazy, and much more to build the creative puzzle human beings are. Just to name one of the many "urban myths", is kind of well known that Frank Sinatra learn a lot, rhythm, phrasing, listening Lester Young playing his saxophone, and that's just one of the millions of stories about "stealing" the good way.
Hey Euskir! So nice to hear from you again. Thanks for the kind words. I hadn’t heard that about Frank and Lester. I’m going to have to listen to them both again and compare.
I totally relate to this. I remember being at a grocery store hearing a song by Bruce Springsteen on the speakers. I was kind of humming that tune on the way home but when I got home it had transformed into something totally different, a new composition by me, and now I can't even remember which Bruce Springsteen tune it was. But thanks for the inspiration Bruce. I love how you say that we can only aspire to be our self. Good episode.
Ironically, one of the examples I was also thinking about was Bruce’s cover of Purple Rain. Another was Ruth Moody’s cover of Dancing in the Dark. We get inspiration from each other’s work one way or another.
Hi everyone. This episode was inspired by a few things: Prince covering Radiohead, Steve Martin's story about a thieving comedian and Austin Kleon's book Steal Like an Artist. Do you have any tips for proper creative thievery?
isn’t it fear of failure that gets in the way?
Fear is definitely a factor when it comes to overthinking. It’s also a form of procrastination.
now thats what I call content.
Good to have you on board!

Hi Gregg. Are you talking about time stamps as in chapter markers in the video? If you so, I have those in the description. Otherwise, I’m not sure what time stamps you’re referring to. Thanks so much for subscribing!
Frábærar pælingar, mjög hressandi að heyra þetta að það þarf ekki allt að vera fullkomið til að byrja að skapa eitthvað spennandi :)
Takk. Ég held að það sé eitthvað sem veldur því að margir halda aftur af sér. Þar á meðal ég að einhverju leyti.
@@KeeptheFlow_SM já, ég líka stundum
What's your perspective on authenticity? Is it unchanging or somehow fluid?
Short and to the point. I relate (of course)
This is 🥇 Scott!
That means a lot coming from you. I can’t wait to get you on the show, if you’re open to it. ???
@@KeeptheFlow_SM sure!
First of all, sorry I'm out of focus! Whoa. Anyway, I'd love to hear what people think of the stripped down format. I'm really just trying to get these out with as little fuss as possible. But I'll get it in focus next time!
Takk fyrir þetta vídeó. Ég tengi!
Takk. Það þýðir mikið að heyra það frá snilldar tónskáldi eins og þér.

Let me know if you have ever gotten to the point of wanting to quit your creative outlet and how you got past it. And if you actually quit, do you feel like it was the right decision?
I feel like I've put my creative outlet on hold until I can properly piece-together the elements necessary in my mind to rejoin. I also have a drumming background, taught lessons for years a while back now, and after I "retired" from teaching (just didn't like kids continuing to not practice, also I wasn't a good teacher really) ...my drumset went into an outside storage building and that was that for *years.* Now (this year) I've started gathering gear for a project I began dreaming about a few years back, bit by bit, in order to eventually have a full range of sounds / expression pieces to take my next foray into music to a completely unknown place, while still not getting evicted of course😅
@@lafemmedevastationI get it. Teaching isn’t for everyone. It took me a while to get to a place where I could handle it. That’s great that you’re getting back into music though. What sort of gear are you gathering?
Without using the word “shower” tell me where you get your best ideas? Driving? On a walk? Is there a boring thing you do that presents an opportunity for daydreaming?
Any tips on how to pull off an Australian accent are greatly appreciated.
Hey Siri, how do you juggle 0 objects?
I hope you didn't think this was a juggling tutorial. :-)
Keep the Flow, cool video keep up the great content
Thanks! I’ll try.
Underrated.
How do you get your mojo back? And while you’re at it, how do you keep from losing it in the first place?
It would be cool if fellow creatives would post their own mission statement here. Mine is already in the video.
Say, who quoted this?
George Bernard Shaw. This is only the tail end of the quote. But I heard Jeff Goldblum recite the whole thing beautifully.
Also a printmaker and a big fan of Number Four Soft Taco. Great interview. Thanks! 😊
I love this conversation.
