SAPS, BLACKJACKS AND SLUNGSHOTS: A HISTORY OF FORGOTTEN WEAPONS, THE BOOK tells the story of the most forgotten weapons from history for the first time in history.
2018 Independent Author Network Awards... Finalist Non-Fiction, History. Amazon #1 New Release in 3 categories.
Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Al Capone, William Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra are just some of the notable people that are encountered in this wide ranging and previously undiscovered tale. The book was exhaustively researched and is, I am told, quite entertaining.

Reading Bob Dylan’s favorite Victorian horror novel for clues about his writing #bobdylan #horror
Bob Dylan tweets! He's made some noise by staring to post on Twitter, especially by name-dropping The Great God Pan, an old horror novel, that it turns out Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft were also fans of.

Someone got sick of swiping their badge at the office garage
I have one and know a little of the history of how it came to my family. An uncle in the Navy traded a can of peaches for the knife from a Marine just coming out of the jungle in the South Pacific. This is the story that has been passed down.
Tracking down Dylan's sources is fun, but things often reveal themselves by accident. Was reading Susan Sontag's review of "Under the Glacier" - novel published in 1968 - and came across this line: "Ua has been Pastor Jon's wife (although she is a Roman Catholic), the madam of a brothel in Buenos Aires..." I guess he might have read it while "still waiting at the altar!"
You try wiping your rear with those claws. It is painful and awkward.
Winning comment for this video
Where can I sell mine? My great uncle was a cop and had it in his truck.
Well you'd get the best price (theoretically) by selling it directly to an interested buyer. Because if you sell to a reseller like a pawn shop or antiques dealer, gun store that sells antique firearms, etc.- they're going to want to give you like 1/4 of what they'll sell it for. If you have an auction house do it then there's no telling what you'll get assuming it sells. The direct route is a pain of course which is why resellers exist though.
Bob's making a statement about how absurd X is.
There is lots of "under the radar" horror and weird fiction, but if anyone has read HP Lovecraft's writings on what influenced him, they will know Arthur Machen. Best writers of old are: M R James, Algernon Blackwood, Hans Heinz Ewers (The Spider), E F Benson, Robert Aickman (50s/60s), and the far superior contemporary of Stephen King being Ramsay Campbell.
I'm taking notes on some of those names. Thanks.
The Machen novel (novella) was published by many publishers, including Oxford. Not sure why Dylan would want to congratulate that press. Blowing smoke, probably. Made you/us look.

Nice coverage of the Gonzalez. A few points of interest perhaps. Most city and county law enforcement uniforms had a deep sap pocket on the right leg for your sap. The beauty of the Gonzalez is that it seldom broke the skin so you avoided bloody scalp cuts and trips to emergency wards before booking. Most of the other saps created bloody messes with their sharp edges. In a scuffle you typically don’t have the opportunity for a precise strike. Bloody scalp wounds suggested the use of excessive force when you visited the emergency room and small town reporters loved getting pictures to promote their point of view.I purchased mine in the mid 60’s . Our court officer knew Robert and secured it for me. We used to joke that you needed to make a good strike on the first swing because it was hard on your arm shoulder and wrist if you missed, and the momentum of the sap could put you out of position for a second strike. Thanks for your research and book.
Bob Dylan has good taste. 'The Great God Pan' is a great story. I think I'll read it again.
Dylan has always been one of my fave musicians of all time and I was really tickled when he was awarded the Nobel but probably won’t read this book⚛❤
Is was all true. Even the lies?? Especially the lies! - Garak
The Mere is a version of an ancient Egyptian weapon ...again, something adapter from the true tangata whenua , of non Polynesian origins
Beautiful dagger, very expensive as well, pure art!!
So he probably didn’t get there within the timeline he is accused of? None of the eye witnesses mentioned anything about the shooter being out of breath and that is what he would have been according to your Reenactment. Good job.
Yes
What is under the Turtle, its been said its Turtles all the way down. YET Imagine you're Mark Walberg and say, "Turtle, Toroidal,...Turtles, Toroidals." Toroidal energy surrounding Earth like a donut, 3d shape is a toroid, 5d shape super-toroid is like including the ball of Earth and Toroidal surrounding energy into a transformative part of something bigger yet to be known.
Have you played around with rope darts/meteor hammer? i practiced similiar forms with two monkey fist knots on the ends of a rope. Timing and inertia are different but the basic movement pattern stay the same
Surprisingly no. I really need to get one. I'm not interested in the non-martial gymnastics techniques that dominate those nowadays of course. But they look fascinating.
Informative as always.
Appreciate that
Impressive aim, and impressive weapon!
Thanks man
At least you're getting better on your side profile & you struck accuracy with the reverse grip which is impressive
Thanks! This was a few months back (footage) too.
I'm curious, have you tried using a cable with such a weapon? Or if there are traditional flexible weapons that use them? I figured you would be the man to ask:)
For this weapon that would go against how they were historically used so it wouldn't suit my purpose but in it'd be an interesting experiment. As to your other question- Cables were used as (or as part of) saps so I can say that for sure. I guess we could call that traditional (certainly historical) but I imagine you meant more like Eastern martial arts weapons... and in that case not that I'm aware of. Side note, nowadays you have those short steel cable whip type weapons that are on the market too but they're not traditional. Steel wire/rope (aka cable) has only been around since... looking it up... 1834 BTW
Yeah, I've always thought it was a little risky to practice with no safety gear. Anything where you can potentially lose a tooth, break your jaw. Hit your shin, your temple, the back of your skull... Your nuts... etc. Is a risk. It's up to the practitioner of course, and what they are trying to achieve. But there's a reason that despite owning functional swords that I do not train with them out of protective gear. And it's because I know from experience that it's possible to hit myself by accident. Because it's happened before. And it's a lot easier to buy a helmet with face protection. Than it is to realize you should have been wearing one to begin with after getting Injured. Just my own 2 cents of course. Just yeah. The unpredictability and potential for it to arc back plus the ability to accelerate the mass makes it tricky and dangerous even for the practitioner. Still cool. I would imagine pinpoint accuracy is a combination of using both hands spread apart to direct the weight and then letting the energy slide through the guiding hand once you are on target. That and mental focus on hitting one point. After that it's just luck😊
With Kusari Gama you can train to pin point accuracy
The eternal dilemma, debate for weapons training. I feel like if someone was going to be able to use this in fight (the historical recreation purpose) then they have to be able to wield it in its true form... where you can in fact cut or hit yourself if you don't do it right. But I understand the other side too.
Interesting topic.
Thanks. Knew no one else would ever make a YT video on it!
In Hindu mythology, the earth is supported by four elephants standing on the back of a turtle. The Hindu deity Vishnu was reincarnated as the turtle Kachhapa that carried the weight of the world on its back.
Ko-ti-a-te. Waha-i-ka
Thanks
Where exactly is this
Right by the White Rock Lake Spillway. Parking would be at the White Rock Lake Waterfall Parking.
Did "nightmare" refer to conditions or visual aesthetics? If it was former I can't say anything, but if it was meant to be latter it fails miserably as such. Still nice looking place.
It was the fact that's kind of spooky but (figured the skaters would get it)... rocky and dangerous. Not a smooth run.
@ObjectHistory I am not familiar with American skateboarding slang. Thanks for enlightening me.
Sometimes I think I'm too high to fall, other times I think I'm so low I don't know if I can come up at all. Reminds me of Lennon's "No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low" where he said "Nobody seems to be as hip as me is what I was saying. Therefore, I must be crazy or a genius - "I mean it must be high or low" "
Nice observation

Thanks for including video of the Globe Theatre
That was the first thing I took my family to when we got into London
Relaxing after studying such dense material that came before. I can relate to him coming back to this over and over in that I've written what I consider "deep" songs, but so often play the more fun stuff
Repeating the word table at the end of the lines is obviously intentional and effective. Best rule of songwriting is to learn all the rules so you know when to break them
love the expansion of rhyme awareness to being internal to lines and words Not talked enough about in songwriting
Thank you
It's very cool! The inscription must be for 1924. Who is the illustrator? In my home province of Ontario, there is still a town called Sw*stika that was founded in 1908 and they refused to change their name just because if the 3rd Reich 😂
Wow, what a great factoid. Good for them.
Oh, now that is a find
It's pretty neat
Don’t worry, your hatpin size is just fine sweetie
.... This is a flap jack type weapon dude. How is is it that impressive? Cops used to carry stuff like this.
Tell me about it, I'm the only person to ever write a book on the subject :) What makes this one so distinctive, even within the world of saps, etc. is a hard body shell containing a shifting load. That is a ridiculously rare historical weapon. The kinds cops used (just like the crminal ones) were 99.999% of the time of a flexible exterior and body.
They had to patch that part up after the Kool-Aid guy charged thrpugh it
winner
Definately relate to the "life isn't about finding yourself but creating yourself and creating things". My mentor Robert Fritz elaborates on this a lot and when I really got that my life changed and know all I do is think about creating: whether it be music or relationships or any aspect of life.
Same! I made it all the way to middle age before realizing this.
Fully inhabiting the character is a big secret, loved the I'm Not There movie
Me too. Hoping this next film is good. I'm worried in that conventional musical biopics (which this seems to be) so often come off as horribly formulaic (IMO).
@@ObjectHistory yeah. I hope (against hope) that the new Dylan movie actually gives some insight into his creative process (Like Get Back and the Brian Wilson movie did). That's always the real story
I appreciate how you respectfully call out Shado who was arrogant in his dismissal of nunchucks as a viable, defensive weapon one might want in their arsenal, so to speak. And I really am glad I found your channel as you acknowledge, pros and cons, strengths, and weaknesses with enthusiasm, and no hubris.
Thanks so much. I have another nunchaku video in the can... will make it one of my upcoming releases.
I love the nunchaku more than life itself. OK...not that much. But a lot. And I know you said you won't get into the debate of whether this is the original nunchaku. But I have to ask: It is not really a sophisticated weapon. Do we really need to go into any deep dive of what the origin is at all? It's fun as an intellectual exercise, but I honestly think it was people realizing you can just connect two sticks together and swing them and smack the daylights out of someone. Does it really have to be more complicated than that? It's not like we can see a connection between how a bow evolved into a crossbow. I truly don't think it was that complicated. Just maybe a bunch of farmers had to protect their space, had sticks, had rope, and became Michaelangelo overnight. Turtle...not painter.
Can I ask where to get the best pair of chucks like you have?
I enjoyed this historical and informative article. I now own a 1976 vintage Colt .38 Detective Special (blued) with 2" barrel. Mine is third generation (1973-1986) with shrouded ejector, improved ramp sight, and hand filling walnut grips. The first generation Colt .38 Cobra (1950-1972) didn't have these features, but the second generation (1973-1981) did. Personally I much prefer these features. The first generation Colt .38 Cobra (unloaded) weighed 15 oz. vs. 17 oz. for the second generation. Of course, Colt's Detective Special, Agent, and Cobra were 2" or 3" barrel variants of their classic D-Frame Police Positive Special revolver (1907-1995). These are the classic .38's of "Crime Noir." They have all appeared in numerous cop and detective movies over the generations. Same for the J-Frame Smith & Wesson Model 36 and 37 Air weight Chiefs Special, and it's stainless version , the Model 60. It's lamentable the Colt .38 Cobra (first generation) used by Jack Ruby to kill Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24th, 1963 wasn't instead owned by a decent woman for personal armed defense, vs. a sinister figure who had links to organized crime and the underworld! It would have been an ideal carry gun for a woman kept discreetly inside her purse or handbag, next to the bed, or to have in an unplanned emergency such as being broken down, isolated, and alone (especially after dark) while inside her vehicle. Today I would personally select Ruger's SP-101 .38 Special revolver with 2.4" or 3.1" barrel, in stainless steel, as my personal carry and bedside .38. It may be a little heavy for a pocket or carry gun? With a good holster that would easily fit inside a jacket or coat pocket, especially during the cold winter months. Finally, Ruger's SP-101 is rated for + P .38 Special ammo, the older vintage .38's weren't .----Jim Farmer Klamath County, Oregon
I believe Roscoe White shot Tippit because he was supposed to TAKE LHO to Redbird airport and he panicked
I Love Halloween, the creepy ghost story season
Same!
the lurs are a kurdish people why do you separate us😕☹🙁
What state are you in? I'm surprised you have that in public know the cops would come question you. Still a cool weapon
Texas so really you can carry just about anything LOL. But I pick my filming spots carefully. This is a skateboarding spot of mine where I almost never see anyone.
man i love these breakdowns of the lyrical devices, something that songwriters rarely study beyond the basics
Thank you so much. It's comments like that which make these videos worth doing.
