Retro PC Games Played on Real Hardware - Just GamePlay, No Commentary.
I have a big collection of retro PC games and I decided to play them one by one. I thought I'd play in alphabetical order but turned out that's a bit boring so I'm playing whatever I want. I also play all these games in real hardware, so there won't be any emulators or anything. Depends on the game I will change the hardware and will add that into the video description, so you know what is running.
At the moment my plan is:
1 - Run the games on real hardware with an average specs.
2 - Play the game at least for 1 hour (longer if I enjoy it)
3 - Rate the game.
4 - No commentary, Just gameplay and in-game sound/music.
I hope you enjoy!

Yep, this certainly is how a lot of people would have experienced GLQuake for the first time. Lookin’ good!
this was my first time seeing Quake 1 with 3DFX card in person, definitely looking good!
R.I.P. Kobe Bryant 1978-2020
R.I.P :(
But why game runs at 30fps?
Hey, I'm not sure where you see the FPS counter but I believe the game runs something like 20-25fps max, maybe 30 when there is not much happening on the screen. You can see the PC spec in the video description. In this spec, this is the best fps you can get. In the near future (probably in a few weeks) I'll build a faster PC and play the game again. This is part of the purpose of this channel, I run everything on real hardware and they are usually not the "best you could get at the time" but rather "what most people had". I hope this answers your question! :)
It ran quite well on the MMX Pentiums back then.
@@SkulldozeR yeah I remember playing that with a P166 and it was working fine!
I like it .. keep the good work
Thanks! I'm glad you like the video. I usually upload 1-2 videos every week. If you think of any old games, please let me know. :)
I definitely played the shit out of this.
Today it is still a great game! I really enjoyed it. I sometimes feel like games became too realistic and they don't feel that enjoyable anymore :)
Would be nice to see Quake 2 also, it will for sure run very well.
I had a quick look at Quake 2, just to see how it runs. It runs quite well but when there are too many explosions around it struggles a bit. I think Pentium 200 is holding 3DFX cards back a lot. Later I'm planning to build a more powerful PC, maybe a Pentium III 500 to play Quake 2.
Runs very well but what resolution is this ?
I think it is 640x480. I tried 800x600 but it didnt look right haha
Thank you so much!!!!
Which driver did you use for the Voodoo 3 ?
hello! I used the latest reference driver. I find it very stable and reliable. I think Pentium 200Mhz can't keep up with the Voodoo3 card. Later I'll put together a faster PC to try all these games again.
Runs really well.
it does! I know Banshee isn't everyone's favourite but I really like the card.
the best game of nba live, how to install in windows 10 ? thanks
hey! I personally haven't tried running it on Win10/11 but I found an article describing how you can make it work. Here's the link. classicgamefixes.wixsite.com/home/nba-live-99 Please let me know if that works! have a good weekend!
Runs very nice
yeah another great job from 3DFX Voodoo 1 card! Last night I tested it with Voodoo Banshee and the difference isn't that big.
i like the grungy visual of the software renderer way more, however the image is too dark in the video
hey! yeah I totally agree the software always has its special charm. I only noticed how dark it looks in the capture after I saw the video, while I play it was totally fine on my screen. I made some adjustments so hopefully for the next video it should look better!
A very interesting game. It runs in Glide with the Banshee and Voodoo 3 too
Yes that was my plan initially but I wanted to give it a try and see how Voodoo 1 would run the game. Voodoo 1 is impressive. Apart from the menus and in-game close ups the game plays very smoothly.
nice aim :)
best I can do with a serial MS Mouse with a ball in it haha
There is no comparison, glide is much much better
@@3dfxvoodoocards6 yep! I make these videos just to show how big of a difference 3dfx made. It's insane haha
Runs really well
it does! sometimes the game stops for 2-3 seconds and continue after but I think that's a bug with Quake. I will continue playing when I have more time. I want to play and finish Quake 1 and 2, then Unreal.
Good old sound
@@efpcvintageplanet3406 yep! I love it haha
Good score fo V1 at high detail on Unreal flyby. I can't remember at the moment myne with 166mmx and 233mmx
@@efpcvintageplanet3406 yeah it did quite well! I was running 166mhz before and now 200mhz. I can't see much difference between 2 cpus
While playing it should be I guess around 20 fps average. You could make a video with gameplay in Unreal with the fps counter turned on so we can see how well it runs the game :). The Unreal intro is much more demanding.
@@supermario8416 I played the game for 10-15mins and it was playable but wasn't great. I think I will leave the game for later. I want to play and finish the single player :)
Very interesting. I think in game while playing the FPS should be significantly higher than in the castle sequence.
Yes you are right, the game had higher FPS! But still it was dipping too low so I decided to leave the game for a higher spec PC.
In 1997 this system was an expensive high-end PC. The game runs very well although not with a high FPS, but still acceptable.
I turned all the graphics features on, I think if I was a little more reasonable I'm sure the FPS would have been much higher, so it's my fault in a way haha.
Glide is the best, by far
Yes! I still like how Software looks but Glide has its own charm.
Many people may have played it, at leats the first level, as its demo was supplied with Windows 98SE.
oh interesting, I didn't know that! Was that pre-installed or was in the CD? I used Win98SE for a long time but I don't remember ever seeing or playing this game.
@@RootiferasRetroGameplay It was on the installation CD. You had to be a geek rummaging through to find it. There also was a demo of an Age of Empires.
@@prenomnom9746 You are right! I just had a look. Under cdsample/demos/ there are 6 demos. Age of Empires, MS Golf, Motocross Madness, MS Money, Monster Truck Madness 2 and MS Pinball. It's so weird I never noticed that. Well, thanks for telling me!
Love this game 🔥🔥🔥 I made a mod on macbook to read windows .exe just to play this game.
Interesting
hey thanks! I think later I'll give the game another try with a different PC and controller. I think Win95 drivers are a little flaky.
How well does Unreal run on this system ?
This is a great question and my plan is to test that today and upload the video today or tomorrow. I had a quick look at GTA2, Quake (GLQuake), Quake II and Mortal Kombat 4. All worked good apart from Quake 2, explosions were a bit hard on the Voodoo1 card I think.
I had to make some changes to the system since the one I used while I record this gameplay video kept giving me bluescreens every few minutes. I think IDE controller on the motherboard is dead. I put together a different PC. Upgraded CPU to 200Mhz and RAM to 128 (Unreal didn't like 32MB). Here is the timedemo: ruclips.net/video/8QbbS6mriKM/видео.html I actually wanted to play the game but unfortunately the PC couldn't handle it. Average 12FPS dropping down to 2-3FPS didn't seem playable. I think Unreal will need to wait for another PC build. Please let me know if you want to see any other games with that PC. I usually put the specs in the video descriptions.
Monster Truck Madness 2 would be a good comparison too.
Oh yeah, good idea! I think I have that game, I'll go check and make a video of it.
Runs really well. Early 3d games from 1996 to 1998 are no problem for this system.
it definitely does work really well! Runs at 600x480 with "normal" level lighting quality. Didn't have any stutter. The only issue I had was the controller getting disconnected.
Would be nice to see some more games on this system, like - Unreal, Quake 2, NFS 2 and 3, Ultimate Race Pro, Motorhead, etc
Yeah good idea! I'm very impressed by the Voodoo1 card, I thought it is going to be much slower than that but it's doing a great job! For Unreal and Quake I have a plan for long play video, I'll probably play and finish the games.
Glide was the best
it was! this is the primary reason I'm making these comparison videos, just to make it very clear :)
What a game it was. Larry, monkey island and this one. Another level of story making and humour.
Larry is on my list too but I'm not sure if youtube would allow me upload the gameplay haha.
There are a lot of secrets in the game, alas, missed
Yeah I watched few other gameplay videos, there are a lot of secrets. Unfortunately the hard drive this game was installed on died and I couldn't go back to starting the game from the beginning again. Maybe in the future I'd play it again and hopefully paying more attention to the details :)
@@RootiferasRetroGameplay : )
The correct picture in this game is on Riva128. Trident blade3d, Rage128pro, Radeon 7200 also quite good
Sorry for the low volume on that one. The original capture always have low sound so I don't get too much background buzz. I up the volume during editing and it seems like I forgot to apply some settings. Thanks!

Haha, what a luck. Clicked at random into 12:44 only to be blasted with Don't walk's earsplitting bass. I love it! 😎
hah this game has a great soundtrack. I love The Red Diesel most I think.
oh that game was not easy
it was a little more than "not easy"! rides fail and collapse too often. shops run out of supplies too often... everything happens too quickly and too often. feels like a whack a mole game more than a management game.
Great audio for a '95 game!
That was the first thing I noticed with the game, running on DOS with standard DOS drivers for AWE64. Compared to all other games the sound is very clear. They've done a great job.
how come Stefen Spielberg did not make a movie out of it yet :/
I heard that this project was started as a TV show but Spielberg thought it would be too costly to make it, then it turned into a game after having a chat with G. Lucas.
oh Lucas Arts adventure game and I have never heard of it :O
Same! I heard about it just recently, a friend recommended.
It’s me again, the one who live the comment for this game. I might give the game a shot for me to play though. As well as the Dungeon Keeper 1!
Hey! Welcome back. The Dig turns out to be a great game! I'm really enjoying it. I'll try to finish it tonight if I can. I guess total play time is about 8-10 hours for me
I wonder where the name 'screamer' comes from 🤔
my best guess is from wiki: A screamer pipe is a type of exhaust configuration fitted to some automotive turbocharged petrol engines with an external wastegate set-up, which vents the waste exhaust to the atmosphere through a separate un-muffled pipe, rather than back into the main exhaust track. This exhaust setup is known for its loud noise.
@@RootiferasRetroGameplay oh ok
good content 👍
thanks!
Controlling the ball in this game was more difficult than controlling it irl :D
yep! also there is only one key to do everything hah
Runs acceptable but I am sure that with a faster CPU like a P1 200 or 233 mhz MMX it would have had a significantly higher FPS.
Yes totally! I have a good collection of CPUs, I might do an Episode 2 with a faster CPU. I actually have a WinChip 200mhz, I want to see how it performs.
@@RootiferasRetroGameplay that would be interesting to see
Very interesting comparison
Thanks! I think it shows how big the difference is between software and 3DFX. I started playing 3DFX version first and it wasn't looking that impressive. I only noticed the difference after trying the software version :)
@@RootiferasRetroGameplay yes, the difference is really huge between glide and software mode
