Joshua Tree to Berdoo Canyon Solo Trip | RUGGED OVERLAND
In this trip that I managed to squeeze out of a bachelor party weekend, I explore the Joshua Tree National Park and make my way into Berdoo Canyon for some camping just outside the national park gates.
I wasn’t able to get the time I would have liked to really explore and see what other camp spots I could have found but I still had an amazing time and was able to see some beautiful scenery, some desert wildlife, and just embrace the magic of the desert in the month of June which to my surprise wasn’t as hot as I was expecting. Hope you enjoy the video.

Exploring the Mendocino National Forest
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 года назад
Hi My name is Oliver and in this video, I explored the Mendocino National Forest in my Tacoma TRD Offroad, along with my friend Aldo in his Tacoma TRD Sport, and my uncle Jolly Joel as a copilot. We started from Upper Lake, California and from there we head north, straight into the mountains where we passed through a couple designated campgrounds. That is where we spend our first night since we...
Billie Bars for Retrax XR Install
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 года назад
In this video I talk about the new Billie Bars for the Retrax XR bed cover, why I decided to use this setup, and how to install them. It’s an easy install and overall this product is solid and sturdy in conjunction with the Retrax XR cover. I’m excited to get my rooftop top tent on and other accessories on the bed bars and be fully equipped for my camping and off-road trips. Follow me on instag...
We camped in that exact same spot back in march of 2021 , great place to camp !!
Audio sucks
Sorry my production crew wasn’t on it that day. I made sure to fire them. Can’t tolerate poor quality audio.
Can you give a recommendation where to tent camp that allows campfires?
I'm heading out today or tomorrow if anyone interested.
I have a 1992 Toyota extra cab 4x4 never have an issue with alignment, so far almost 400,000 miles
What psi did you air down too?
Cool vid... tks for sharing. I got to get out there soon
Nice video 👍🏼💪🏼 Do you need a special pass to enter these areas?
So you need to pay to enter Joshua Tree National park in a vehicle which is mandatory for this trail since 80% of it is inside the national park.
Great video
How has this held up with the weight of a tent and everything else?
It’s a solid bed rack and solid bed cover. Handles the weight like nothing, and the fact that it’s a lot profile bed rack doesn’t add wind resistance to the truck.
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles I'm thinking about doing this exact setup. Do you ever get any rattles from the cover?
@@jgm113 i haven’t gotten any rattles in the year and half or so time that I’ve had it. But you can always retighten anything in case it were to happen. I usually loctite everything when installing too so it just helps.
@@jgm113 best thing about this set up is that it’s easy to take off the bedrack whenever you need your truck bed or just for the season. I have mine off right now.
sucks that people in california want the fake social palmtree shit and cut down these forest no wonder there's so many npcs in the bay they have never seen nature
Enjoyed your video! Love JT but never hit the 4x4 trials since I didn’t have a capable rig. Now I do! Curious on which Viair you have and 4 way hookup?
Thanks for watching! I have the Viair 450 P If I remember correctly. And the hose system I got from Runnin4Tacos
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles thanks! How do you like camping solo? I usually camp with my wife but thinking about a solo trip
@@virtualjeff99 I prefer to go with my wife and my 87lb staffy as well just because it doesn’t get as boring. I rather share those moments with loved ones but in this trip in particular the whole point for going down to SoCal was for a friends bachelor party so solo trip was the only way.
What road were y’all driving ?
what tires r those? looks agressive af
Yokohama Geolander MT
all is good but please movement camera slowly , thank you
I tell myself the same thing when I start editing 😂. It’s a learning process
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles ok , don’t worry . I will wait for next your good video ,
Great rigs!!!
what version of the DA lights did you get? I see three different ones on the DA website.
Since I got 8 total I went with the cheapest option and honestly they didn’t disappoint… yet. Only thing I noticed about these specifically is that the mounting hardware they give you for them rust out almost immediately, so if I would have known I would have given them a coat of black paint or something to try and prevent it. But light output is solid, maybe not as amazing as some Baja designs or heretic but it’s good light for the price.
ruclips.net/video/jhpN5LfMmCQ/видео.html
You can see how bright they are if you watch this video, I use them on a night run in Mendocino.
Great looking rig man!! I have a camper shell and have been highly considering putting a RTT on top of it, but I keep seeing people switch away from that setup to bed racks instead. Does the setup really perform that poorly on the trail with the camper shell+RTT combo?
It really depends on what kind of trails you typically go on. If you wanna do some easy pretty much flat trails with nothing to crazy for obstacles you will be fine. I thing it’s a great setup since you can fit all the gear you want in it and lock it up, and you can customize the inside to your liking in terms of kitchen drawers, fridge slide out, even a little seating area it the weather gets bad while you’re hanging out. But from my experience, going on some tougher trails, still nothing crazy but enough to get you off camber, there’s more of a pucker factor when at those points of a trail. Also the MPGs take a hit on the highway with the wind pulling on the camper shell. That’s my reason for switching to a bed rack setup but recently I’ve been seeing a lot of these GFC, topo toppers and super Pacifics and it looks like this might be the best option. The GFC and topotopper are the lightest on the market and having the tent up top nice and slim keep the wind drag to a minimum and you still have a whole camper shell for your gear. I honestly thing I’ll be switching to that once I could afford it. Which probably won’t be for a few years. That being said, I love he bed rack and RTT setup a lot. Does everything in want it to do, simple, and I can still lock my stuff when I need to.
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles dude, thanks for the in depth reply! That makes a lot of sense. I'm getting about 13MPG now on my 2014 TRD Off-Road on 33's, so going down from there would not be great...haha! I'm in Arizona, so most the trails I do are very rutted out, rocky, and put you off camber, not flat trails really. The trails can get pretty gnarly compared to if I was just taking it up camping or something on the highway and a forest road. I'll have to keep thinking if adding the RTT on top of my camper is worth it then, I don't want to be super top heavy. The GoFastCampers look so nice! MY brother-in-law just got one and it's sick! Expensive though....
@@chadwin MPGs hurt a little but it’s something we have to deal with at the end of the day if this is a hobby or lifestyle you wanna live. I did regear my differentials to. 5.29 nitro gears and that’s helped tremendously with MPG. I hear you on the coat on the GFC which personally I would go with the TopoTopper because it’s more customizable from the factory and it’s a smaller company which I like. They’re about the same price, maybe GFC is a bit more depending on how much you want to mod the topotopper, and if you add the price of a good RTT and solid bed rack, you’re not too far from the total price of a Topotopper. I feel like if I would have been a bit more patient I probably would have waited a bit longer before getting my bed setup now and got the TopoTopper.
On your way down from your campsite, I feel like someone dug those four hole gap just to make it difficult to get up there, but you hand no issue.
I’m not sure but it could be. Could also be from people going up and down after the rainy season just getting washed out like that or people getting stuck and spinning wheels. Either way I was able to go up and down with no issues, wish i would have recorded the way up. It was more exciting than the way down.
Thats me. I do that lol. I go up in 2wd traction off, and try to dig out as much as i can. Gotta dig out the north side more, too easy to get up.
Bad ass rig!!!!!! Need to look into the lighting company
Roof rack lights are from @desertarmorshop & hood/ditch lights are from Baja designs 🤙🏽
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles would you be able to do a how to on how you mounted your lights to the roof rack?
@@otterthrash mmm probably won’t take them off just to put them back on to be honest but I can do a short showing them up close and the basics of how they’re mounted
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles yeah that would be cool
Like your Rig,, just the way I will do my, great job
Thank you sir. Everything has a solid purpose on the build, other than maybe taking the axe with me to the desert this trip but you know what I mean. Might add a water port for my water solution or build a diy pvc one for rinsing off dishes and washing your hands at camp, but other than that I feel pretty happy with it. Oh lastly an awning is necessary for sure.
Thats a beautiful truck brotha! Simple and badass
Thanks man I appreciate it 🤙🏽
Who makes that hitch step?
WarFab hitch skid. Pretty solid piece. 🤙🏽
Awesome video!
Great Video, just subscribed to see more..
Thank you much appreciated 🙏🏽
Yo-you shared unreal trip. goodnight.
Snow mountain is awesome I know that entire route you did and you’re from Petaluma👍👍👍
Nice! Do you have the GPS coordinates?
Nice trip Thanks for sharing
Nice video. Im a backpacker just getting into overlanding. It seems a skottle is a popular type of cooking stove/grill. I use the GSI Pinnacle Pro propane stove.

Great video! I’ve been thinking about getting this cover for my Tacoma. Curious how much room is left from bottom of canister to the bed floor?
There’s about 6-8” of space left under the canister.
Great video!
Awesome video! I was just at bear creek 2 month ago. Then we headed to lake pillsbury through dirt roads hull mountain bald mountain out to Usal beach! Was an amazing weeknd! Looking forward to see more videos
Did you have to go back through Elk mountain rd to get to lake Pillsbury after bear creek? Because I know there’s a way to get to Rocky point which is south part of lake Pillsbury, but they recently put up a no trespassing sign where that road starts. On Google earth it doesn’t show that there’s any buildings or anything out that way so I’m curious if some random put the sign up to keep it to themselves or what.
Nice video, keep it up!
3 inch lift with 285?
Fox suspension 2.5 coilovers in front, 2.0 with adjustable reservoirs in the rear, all pro 3” expedition leaf packs and preload in front set to about 2.5” of lift with 285/75/17 Yokohamas
what tires and rims an offset are you rocking? Did u need to do a cmc or any cutting?
There’s no way around a CMC when going with a bigger size tire. It’s a must. 285/75/17 on about a -38 offset
Just switched from Bakflip tonneau cover to Retraxpro XR so I can install a RTT and still access my truck bed on my Tacoma. Saw your video and looked perfect for my needs. However, when I went to BillieBar web site I couldn’t find any products that use T-slot systems. BillieBar. Doesn’t provide a customer service phonetic number so had to email them and waiting for a reply. In the meantime, how’d you find that rack?
They have t slot bed racks specific to your truck. What truck do you have? You can also contact them through Instagram.
The rack is super strong and has served me well so far. Better than what I expected. It’s modular and you can put almost any mount on it with either the molle panels or the crossbar slots themselves. Check out my Instagram @cemento.Yoda for pictures of how I have mine setup. I’ll be adding more videos and pictures in the future as well.
Great video, thank you!
What's the dynamic and static limits?
The weight rating on the BillieBars is going to be way higher than the actual covers can handle. The weight rating on a lot of the retractable covers like my Retrax XR, per each company, is about 600-700lbs static, and 300-400lbs dynamic. Enough for a rooftop tent, gas cans, recovery equipment, and really anything you would need when out adventuring. They have all sorts of accessories to mount bikes, kayaks, cargo boxes and a bunch of other things you could possibly want.
Thank you for the video, I can't wait to get out there.
That Coleman grill is a piece of junk. Mine only last me two trips. Both tires popped off. You only paid for it’s names.
I’ve since traded it for a eureka stove I got at REI. So far it’s been great and way more compact.
What bed cover system is that?
It’s a retrax Xr cover
Is not the pro right ?
@@edgarmartinez1512 this one is not the pro, the pro is the battery powered cover that opens and closes with a button. I opted for the manual one since I go off-road and the bed shakes around a lot to where I didn’t want to risk breaking any of the wiring or electronic parts.
@@DirtRoad_Chronicles so I got the same cover for my 2022 tundra do they make the same bed rack that you have on your Tacoma for the tundra? I like your set up
@@edgarmartinez1512 yes they do, go on their website, billiebars, and use the drop down menu and look for retractable covers with t slots bed rack. And you’ll see the tundra option there.
great video! Looking to explore some trails there soon so this video was great to see
Thanks for watching. Mendocino is so big to explore so you’ll have a great time!
Wow so fun!
