2024 Singlehanded Vallejo Race - Westsail 32 Tortuga
Просмотров 85428 дней назад
Westsail 32 Tortuga sailed in the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s Vallejo 1-2 race this past weekend. The forecast was not looking promising with super light winds. On Saturday, race 1 saw enough wind and favorable current to get the boats over the start line and on their way to Vallejo. It was a bummer to watch a collision of 2 boats before my start. Hoping all was OK for both boats. Keeping a ...

Was a misty start to the day for the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 2024 Half Moon Bay Race! There was lots of activity around the city front. There was an organized group of swimmers from the south tower of the GGB across the opening to Finger Point, there was an Alcatraz Invitational swim from The Rock to the city front and an YRA race start at StFYC and all were happening before and around o...
2023 SHTP - Singlehanded Sailing To Hawaii - Westsail Tortuga

Westsail Tortuga sailed in the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 2023 Transpacific Yacht Race. It was another challenging race this time (my 3rd). Two days before sailing to Hanalei Bay my diver discovered very concerning movement of the Max Prop fore and aft on the shaft. The good folks at SF boat works were able to get me hauled out and we got the issue sorted with the nut holding the Max Prop h...

Matthew Turner is a tall ship designed after the ship Galilee, which was built in 1891 by the ship designer and builder Matthew Turner. The Galilee held the San Francisco to Tahiti passage record of 19 days for many years. It is inspired by renowned Bay Area ship builder, Matthew Turner, and his design Galilee, which came to rest at the foot of Napa Street in Sausalito.

Sailed in the BAMA Doublehanded Farallones race Aboard Westsail 32 Tortuga. Thanks to Rik Williams from Westsail 28 Irish Rose for being such awesome crew! The conditions were pretty epic with the steady winds in the mid 20s, peaking in the 30s while rounding the Island. Heard there was a dismasting, lots of boat carnage and saw the USCG Helo overhead headed to the island. Could not make out wh...

PacCup Emergency Steering Demo - Gale Rider on Hanse 342 Twelve Winded Sky
Просмотров 3002 года назад
Emergency steering demo using a Gale Rider drogue to steer a Hanse 342. Ideally the blocks amidships would be farther out from the hull ie lashing a pole across the deck. We were able to control the boat upwind and downwind and through the wind by pulling the drogue in or out and adjusting the sails. The rudder was locked amidships. The drogue would probably perform better for steering if there...

Nice boat man... very nice... Im aiming for the 28ft (budget limitations). Nice boat...
Good one. Well done. Done a few Transpacs but not solo
If your cruising it doesn't make much difference if its going 5 6 7 knots.. and 10 knots are only if you've got a catamaran 😊
Solo…yet you continue to use first person plural. Language usage is a funny thing.
And the knee?…
Beautiful sailboat ⛵🌊 thanks for sharing.I m sailor and sailed though the Pacific ocean completely.Breat video , impressed.I wish you a happy sailing
in re. to results at the end, we don't care, just happy to see you get there in one piece.
Nice boat, looks to be in very good repair. An ocean passage in a 32 ft boat averaging 5.7 knots is excellent.👍👍👍👍👍
I got nine and a half min. into the video- I just could not take one more "AND AHH.
Appreciate such a fine example of responsible seamanship. Well done sir!
I was on RC for a Flying Scot nationals, and we had ~200 Flying Scots on the line. It was a very aggressive fleet, and two boats collided. One boat almost lost its mast. The other was broadsided and almost lost his shroud.
Exciting! Too bad you had to retire because of low/no winds. Thanks for posting. A couple of questions: Do you have a self tacking staysail? How did you rig it? Noticed you have replaced the yankee with a full genoa. Does the staysail stay interfere with the genoa when tacking? Best wishes, Arctic Loon WS#77
A pox on jet skis.
A fun day on the water. And a good start is always a welcomed vibe!
Is your mainsail cut shorter than the factory sail ( at the foot)? Thanks to share your sailing, good times👍
Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice, too bad about the lack of breeze. Thanks for sharing for those of us who couldn't be there.
Congratulations Captain! It's been a pleasure sailing with you.
Thank you!
Chef
Food looks great. Are you a shef?
Only in Tortuga’s kitchen!
pretty nice averave boat speed for a westsail 32. nice job, nice appointed boat.
Thank you!
Inspiring
Wow! 5.78 kt average -- very well done.
Thanks!
Excellent attempt! Bravo Zulu - Arctic Loon WS#77
Thank you!!
Great video and great result congratulations! I had a lot of fun watching this your departure from San Fransisco was great. I figured the knee injury took you out of the running but ended up with an excellent result. Liked the editing too made a good story Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
W32 #737 here. Great video full of fond voyaging memories. Thanks!!
Thank you!
Wow that's a really nice boat and looks to be in beautiful condition as well. Great video as well. That knee is definitely swollen. Whew not good being out there single handed having to deal with something like that.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, Cap’n! From another Westsailor!
Thank you!
Great time. Thanks!
Thanks. I am reviewing if I should buy one to replace my Raymarine
Built westsails at NC . Iner coastal 😮😮😮 lots Beautiful Boat Dave Hardy call
Awesome job. Hope your knee is ok. Enjoyed the video.
Thanks! Yes all healed!
Did you leave the asym up at night?
Only a couple of nights. Once you get into the squally zone it gets a bit dicey for my taste.
The boat absolute bristol. Boats like this don't really belong to us... we are just stewards.. caretakers for awhile. You are doing this boat justice.
Thank you! Yes she keeps me busy trying to be a good steward!
So true! We are caretakers. Thank you!
Fantastic, what a beautiful journey.
Tip my hat!
The noise that autopilot makes would get to me pretty quickly. 😂
Dude can sail & cook! Well done! Cheers from LA. 🍻
I have not forgotten that time during the windy reach when i radioed over to you complaining about my miserable ride a coupla hundred miles offshore. Your response, "well, i am putting a pizza in the oven, eat your heart out." That was not very nice RL. 😂
Haha! That’s my secret to sailing fast, eating well!
What a lovely boat. You have done a great job refitting and maintaining a superb voyaging boat. I have sailed a WS 32 and when set up correctly and sailed skillfully they can be far more capable than people give them credit for.
Thank you! Yes, for some reason people love to hate on the W32.
That’s a terrific endorsement from a knowledgeable cruiser., Far Reach Voyages.
Why not make use of your windvane steering? Those weather conditions must be pretty hard on your tiller pilot to say nothing of the electrical consumption. During my 40,000 mile singlehanded circumnavigation in the high latitudes north and south in a Chatham 33 steel pilothouse cutter, I only used the electric autopilot while motoring in and out of ports.
I alternate between both, depending on the conditions. The wind vane is definitely quieter :)
Very very nice taking!!! With two head sails and a full keel: amazing job!!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Taking life one sail at a time :)
Westsail is a great boat, very seaworthy design.Did you have to get medical treatment for that knee injury? Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Yes I got the knee X ray’d, MRI’d etc and it was a cellulitis infection that was the issue. More antibiotics shoreside and it kicked it out.
Great video. The old expression, go with the flow, applies here.
Yes indeed. The flood current was the boss that day!
Nice job! I enjoyed your video very much. Is there a video of the return trip coming?
Thank you! I didn’t take quite as much footage on the return trip but I’ll get around to compiling something soon.
I have used the back currents near baker beach which are often the reverse of the center direction. Check the current maps in your tide book. It's not always possible but fun when it is.
Yup - that was helpful to an extent but the wind was shifty on that side. A test of patience all around!
Thanks for these videos! Love them.
Thanks!
Noisy auto pilot~
Looks like short tacking up the North side didn't work either. Nice effort! Thanks for posting.
Thanks! Yeah couldn’t find much relief. You have to be able to make really short tacks to take advantage of the current relief on the north side and Tortuga doesn’t do that like a light racey boat :)
Great video, lots of work to tack those sails. You make it appear nearly effortless.
Thanks! Well I sure got my tacking workout/practice in that day!
