The adventures of the Westsail 32 Tortuga
Westsail 32 Tortuga - 2025 Three Bridge Fiasco Race - Singlehanded
Westsail 32 Tortuga sailed singlehanded in the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 2025 Three Bridge Fiasco. Light winds and a heavy ebb were not a good combination to try to finish! Tortuga started the race headed into the bay against the current knowing that if we sailed first to the mark near the Golden Gate Bridge, with the current I would be swept out under the bridge with the building ebb. I got about as far as Alcatraz doing 2-3 knots before the wind went really light and the drifting began. I’ve seen this movie before and didn’t want to spend my afternoon getting sucked out of the bay. After going backwards for a bit I packed it in and motored back to Pier 39.

Tortuga celebrated her 50th birthday this year! She came out of the Westsail molds in Costa Mesa, June 1974 as hull #207. Hard to believe that she’s been in my stewardship for 26 years! Here’s some highlights from 2024 that was filled with salty adventures, singlehanded and doublehanded sailing and some BYBS&T….Boat yard blood, sweat and tears! Hope you enjoy the reel! #westsail32 #fullkeelraci...

2024 Singlehanded Vallejo Race - Westsail 32 Tortuga
Просмотров 9163 месяца назад
Westsail 32 Tortuga sailed in the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s Vallejo 1-2 race this past weekend. The forecast was not looking promising with super light winds. On Saturday, race 1 saw enough wind and favorable current to get the boats over the start line and on their way to Vallejo. It was a bummer to watch a collision of 2 boats before my start. Hoping all was OK for both boats. Keeping a ...

Was a misty start to the day for the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 2024 Half Moon Bay Race! There was lots of activity around the city front. There was an organized group of swimmers from the south tower of the GGB across the opening to Finger Point, there was an Alcatraz Invitational swim from The Rock to the city front and an YRA race start at StFYC and all were happening before and around o...
2023 SHTP - Singlehanded Sailing To Hawaii - Westsail Tortuga

Westsail Tortuga sailed in the Singlehanded Sailing Society’s 2023 Transpacific Yacht Race. It was another challenging race this time (my 3rd). Two days before sailing to Hanalei Bay my diver discovered very concerning movement of the Max Prop fore and aft on the shaft. The good folks at SF boat works were able to get me hauled out and we got the issue sorted with the nut holding the Max Prop h...

Sailed in the BAMA Doublehanded Farallones race Aboard Westsail 32 Tortuga. Thanks to Rik Williams from Westsail 28 Irish Rose for being such awesome crew! The conditions were pretty epic with the steady winds in the mid 20s, peaking in the 30s while rounding the Island. Heard there was a dismasting, lots of boat carnage and saw the USCG Helo overhead headed to the island. Could not make out wh...

All you naysayers just worry about your own shit.
Thank you for sharing this Captain Leisure.
Great looking line and sail management and cooking! Thank for sharing. Yuuum! I’d like more personal story like your sailing background, how long you’ve owned tortuga and took to prepare it. It would have made a good story to know how many boats in class and overall etc. Even details like concerns over getting sleep and keeping watch would be good addons. Thanks
I know you are super busy singlehanded, but I would really like to see less description and more actual footage of you running the boat. Raising sails, tacking singlehanded with a cutter rig, reefing, all the huge challenges for solo sailors running a bigger boat. Less experienced sailors (I am one) can really learn a lot from just watching you manage all aspects of the boat. Much appreciated!
You need a big electric fan and a generator so you can blow air on the sail. Put the fan up front and face towards the stern. Would that be legal?
Awesome thanks for sharing for this of us who weren't there.
I've seen your boat in SF bay before. I live in Oakland. One day I hope to be a westsail owner
Good on ya mate .. 👍🏿🇦🇺
What camera do you used to record this video?
No roller furling?
Just so good Captain - what a magic trip! Many thanks for sharing your pleasure :)😃
Great video, lovely boats the Westsails 32, heavy and strong, with a big powerful keel. Thanks so much for sharing.
Beautiful on all counts!
If the vane is over powered arnt you less balanced and the over power pops the fuse .
Great videos true love them! But you might want to move your aft fair lead forward, or add a snatch block on your genoe sheet to improve your sheet angle
great video and great accomplishment! Well done!
Great compilation! I'm in the process of finding a W32, and trying to learn about the pros and cons of their various setups. I noticed that you have a loose-footed staysail. What are the benefits and disadvantages of that mode, compared to having a staysail boom? Thanks!
Always enjoy your videos! I have Mañana #194. Would you ever do an interior tour video? Especially how you set up for offshore single handing.
Great job on the video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
@ so how is docking at Pier39? We used to dock there many years ago and are thinking of coming back.
@@danknox9986I’ll PM you on FB with more details.
Great video, I enjoyed watching!
Thank you!
Many thanks for sharing. Always a pleasure to follow Tortuga's adventures. Best wishes for fine sailing in 2025! Vikram Misra - Arctic Loon WS32 #77
Thanks so much! Fair winds in 2025 with your Westsail 32!
Exceptional presentation to take us along with you. I hope your pride of accomplishment matches my admiration of your achievement. Thank you and fair seas.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Thanks for sharing the marvelous vlog coming! Inspirational for a WS32 seeker. Cheers!
Thanks so much!
Great seeing it from your standpoint! Except for the knee, it looks like you had a great time!
Great video record of the race Mr. Tortuga... Are you considering doing the SHTP again in 2025?
Nice boat man... very nice... Im aiming for the 28ft (budget limitations). Nice boat...
Good one. Well done. Done a few Transpacs but not solo
If your cruising it doesn't make much difference if its going 5 6 7 knots.. and 10 knots are only if you've got a catamaran 😊
Solo…yet you continue to use first person plural. Language usage is a funny thing.
It’s me and Tortuga…so I’m not all alone on the ocean :)
And the knee?…
All good thanks!
Beautiful sailboat ⛵🌊 thanks for sharing.I m sailor and sailed though the Pacific ocean completely.Breat video , impressed.I wish you a happy sailing
Thanks so much!
in re. to results at the end, we don't care, just happy to see you get there in one piece.
Thanks! Me too! :)
Nice boat, looks to be in very good repair. An ocean passage in a 32 ft boat averaging 5.7 knots is excellent.👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the kind words!
Appreciate such a fine example of responsible seamanship. Well done sir!
Thank you so much!
I was on RC for a Flying Scot nationals, and we had ~200 Flying Scots on the line. It was a very aggressive fleet, and two boats collided. One boat almost lost its mast. The other was broadsided and almost lost his shroud.
Sounds stressful! Hope everyone was ok!
Exciting! Too bad you had to retire because of low/no winds. Thanks for posting. A couple of questions: Do you have a self tacking staysail? How did you rig it? Noticed you have replaced the yankee with a full genoa. Does the staysail stay interfere with the genoa when tacking? Best wishes, Arctic Loon WS#77
My staysail is not self tacking. When i’m flying the bigger jib, I do have to help it around the staysail stay in light winds sometimes but it generally will tack over. Thanks!
@@westsailtortuga3179 Thanks!!!
A pox on jet skis.
A fun day on the water. And a good start is always a welcomed vibe!
Indeed! A good start helps with crew morale! Thanks!
Is your mainsail cut shorter than the factory sail ( at the foot)? Thanks to share your sailing, good times👍
Yes my mainsail has a shorter foot and full battens compared to the standard mainsail cut. It is better for weather helm and doesn’t seem to affect performance much by being slightly smaller. Thanks!
Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice, too bad about the lack of breeze. Thanks for sharing for those of us who couldn't be there.
Congratulations Captain! It's been a pleasure sailing with you.
Thank you!
Chef
Food looks great. Are you a shef?
Only in Tortuga’s kitchen!
pretty nice averave boat speed for a westsail 32. nice job, nice appointed boat.
Thank you!
Inspiring
Wow! 5.78 kt average -- very well done.
Thanks!
Excellent attempt! Bravo Zulu - Arctic Loon WS#77
Thank you!!
Great video and great result congratulations! I had a lot of fun watching this your departure from San Fransisco was great. I figured the knee injury took you out of the running but ended up with an excellent result. Liked the editing too made a good story Thanks!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
W32 #737 here. Great video full of fond voyaging memories. Thanks!!
