DARPA Grand Challenge - 2005 Driverless Car Competition
With all the talk about Google's self driving vehicles and their moonshot venture into robotics, I thought it was timely to take this out of the archives. The video covers the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, the first successful completion of the government sponsored event aimed at the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology. It's amazing to think that less than a decade ago only a handful of vehicles could complete this course. Today, there is legislation to legalize such cars for street use.
Looking back, this event will likely be remember as a milestone moment in automotive history. I'm happy to have been there to cover it, and glad to share it everyone.

Crossing Borders - Land Rover Trek
Просмотров 88 тыс.12 лет назад
In 1999, an enthusiastic group of Land Rover owners traversed North America as part of the Border-To-Border Society's Trans-American Trek. This video highlights the 22 day trip.
Cool.
Stanley does not understand the concept of fear
2024 autonomous is pretty bad
Tesla would destroy this now… we have come so far
interesting video
Why NOVA didn’t show Team ENSCO’s Dexter is beyond me. Dexter was easily on pace to finish.
Daniel Ash is a genius even if he doesn't know it. Love and 🚀 blew my mind. Seventh dream of teenage heaven was the first I heard and that album turned me on and everything else he's done after. Tones on tail was superb too. His solo stuff..BRILLIANT. seen him 5 times and I want more!!!
Teslas' FSD beta (2022) is Incredible. As a senior in high school (1984) I was into programming and I made a prediction / bet with my friend - that by the time I was 40, cars will drive themselves. You'll be able to input a destination and your car will drive you there. It came true. That milestone occured at the finish of The Darpa Grand Challenge ( 2005 ) for autonomous vehicles. This prediction was made 38 years ago. That bet was done back during 8-bit Apple ][ computers, we had only 2 of them for the whole high school, and I wasn't part of the group who 'played around' with them. I drooled at their sight, hoping to touch them, while staring through the security metal mesh windows. I learned coding by myself through books. ruclips.net/video/7a6GrKqOxeU/видео.html
Highlander suffered engine module failure causing vehicle to enter 'limp' mode (which in turn browned-out onboard power systems). This is why LIDAR Gimbal can be seen idle and out of Yaw position during race. Highlander failure was originally and wrongfully blamed on LIDAR Gimbal apparatus without any failure disposition analysis. Team Leader (Red Whittaker) announced publicly that Gimbal apparatus (and subsequently Gimbal Team) was responsible for losing race. This public announcement was made void of any technical evidence or fact (based solely on Red's personal doubts Gimbal Team could succeed throughout project), insulting and infuriating Gimbal Team members that worked so hard to design and implement complex and critical system, that ultimately performed flawlessly during each race. Gimbal Team members either resigned or moved on from program following betrayal. Three years later Red Whittaker acknowledged actual failure disposition privately, but never reached out to wronged team members, or apologized personally. Sandstorm was intentionally programmed to drive slower than Stanley's average pace (recorded during trials) with flawed strategy that 'slow and steady' would win race (Red Whittaker philosophy). This strategy all but assured Sandstorm would lose to Stanley, unless Stanley experienced technical problem (which was never evident during trails). Thanks Red Team Gimbal Team members that walked away from project with your heads bowed and faith bruised; your hard work, technical expertise, outstanding contributions and devotion pioneered technical foundations for all future driverless vehicle endeavors that follow. You should all be proud of what you accomplished, you shined and proved your expertise in face of relentless criticism and doubt, few believed you could succeed, but we knew better and proved it.
Anyone know the name of the acoustic guitar piece?
No
Stanley is the name we are stuck with today, as we get it's name in every AI book. The fact is that I didn't know it was sponsored by Red Bull. I mean c'mon, if this race was today, you would have known it would win just by looking at it's sponsorship. Seriously though, all jokes aside, It's lovely to a pioneer at something, always.
They use linux btw
This is how the self-driving car was born.
weird to watch this now
also just looked it up right now… you think FSD 9.1 would master the course?
It's just...... so..... Waaaaauw..... Halleluja <3
Team Ensco won
shame dave dug blokes and never had a few kids...
cool, i remember my dad showed me this as a kid! my favorite was terramax
Same
You still da man Dan, I use to dance to your music in the early 80’s in a punk bar called The Exit in Chicago. I see you’re holding your own still. We survived the 80’s and I still don’t take old people’s meds. Nor do I take drugs, nor smoke, I’ll have a drink on a occasion but I’m not goin down without a fight🙌🏼rock on!
Very honest straight forward interview, what a cool guy.

"Makes the camel trophy look pussy" erm,,!! No , not really!
Good to see some Brit LR mechanics!!! on the trip. I am a kiwi LR 90 enthusiast!! Awesome machines.
"...hit the GPS waypoints with human-like precision..." we're doomed if all they can do is human-like precision. I want super-human precision at 250 mph.
Read the title next time
Good thing that they sound nothing like U2. He does resemble Bono as far as looks.
this should be used immediately to fight isis
the announcer's mannerisms are funny
I Luv Daniel Ash since long time... Bauhaus, L&R, Tones on tail... on his own... I simply LOVE him. He sings my soul. Kisses from Brazil
Soul Burguer im fall under the love and rockets team
Fantastic adventure made possible by Land Rovers!
Land Rovers would be GREAT if they had american v8s and were built by Toyota. But then they would not be "Land Rovers", they would be "Great".
Fantastic video..:-)))
Fantastically inspiring film. Well done!
Great video, would love to do something like that. Amazing!
An enduringly brilliant music maker. Always worth a listen. He's great!
da its how they treat their own its always been that way
Pronouncing the word "route" correctly would be a big help. Americans speak some of the worst english of all english speaking countries...
I spot a grammatical error in your comment. See if you can find it.
Great trip but could have been more challenging if they have included a portion of Baja trails!
agreed august
I would love to do something like this
My 95 Discovery was B2B #74. Excellent group, Border to Border.
Will this trip happen again?
Satellite!
great video - would love to do this trip from beginning to end. certainly more so than route 66 and of course the only way to do it is in a land rover. LR4 would be nice. thanks for posting - so jealous of the off road opportunities than we have in the uk.
Loved your long hair. So fucken hot!
bobby clarke tru dat, but he also looks good with this cut.
Thanks..
Love daniel ash! He has aged incredibly! Omfg! He's talented, good looking, very smart, n deserves all the success he has. I do miss the long, spiked hair. The mohawk has a certain appeal though. Please never again compare Ash n Bono! The music is worlds apart.
Hey Joe: Saw your posting, had to sign up and comment. This was a great trip, no video can show the personalities and the people that really made the trip. I had a VHS copy of this Vid, no idea who I lent it to, SO happy to see the posted! Thanks Sully. Kevin B2B35
