DARPA Grand Challenge - 2005 Driverless Car Competition
With all the talk about Google's self driving vehicles and their moonshot venture into robotics, I thought it was timely to take this out of the archives. The video covers the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, the first successful completion of the government sponsored event aimed at the advancement of autonomous vehicle technology. It's amazing to think that less than a decade ago only a handful of vehicles could complete this course. Today, there is legislation to legalize such cars for street use.
Looking back, this event will likely be remember as a milestone moment in automotive history. I'm happy to have been there to cover it, and glad to share it everyone.

    Daniel Ash is a genius even if he doesn't know it. Love and 🚀 blew my mind. Seventh dream of teenage heaven was the first I heard and that album turned me on and everything else he's done after. Tones on tail was superb too. His solo stuff..BRILLIANT. seen him 5 times and I want more!!!

    Teslas' FSD beta (2022) is Incredible. As a senior in high school (1984) I was into programming and I made a prediction / bet with my friend - that by the time I was 40, cars will drive themselves. You'll be able to input a destination and your car will drive you there. It came true. That milestone occured at the finish of The Darpa Grand Challenge ( 2005 ) for autonomous vehicles. This prediction was made 38 years ago. That bet was done back during 8-bit Apple ][ computers, we had only 2 of them for the whole high school, and I wasn't part of the group who 'played around' with them. I drooled at their sight, hoping to touch them, while staring through the security metal mesh windows. I learned coding by myself through books. ruclips.net/video/7a6GrKqOxeU/видео.html

    Highlander suffered engine module failure causing vehicle to enter 'limp' mode (which in turn browned-out onboard power systems). This is why LIDAR Gimbal can be seen idle and out of Yaw position during race. Highlander failure was originally and wrongfully blamed on LIDAR Gimbal apparatus without any failure disposition analysis. Team Leader (Red Whittaker) announced publicly that Gimbal apparatus (and subsequently Gimbal Team) was responsible for losing race. This public announcement was made void of any technical evidence or fact (based solely on Red's personal doubts Gimbal Team could succeed throughout project), insulting and infuriating Gimbal Team members that worked so hard to design and implement complex and critical system, that ultimately performed flawlessly during each race. Gimbal Team members either resigned or moved on from program following betrayal. Three years later Red Whittaker acknowledged actual failure disposition privately, but never reached out to wronged team members, or apologized personally. Sandstorm was intentionally programmed to drive slower than Stanley's average pace (recorded during trials) with flawed strategy that 'slow and steady' would win race (Red Whittaker philosophy). This strategy all but assured Sandstorm would lose to Stanley, unless Stanley experienced technical problem (which was never evident during trails). Thanks Red Team Gimbal Team members that walked away from project with your heads bowed and faith bruised; your hard work, technical expertise, outstanding contributions and devotion pioneered technical foundations for all future driverless vehicle endeavors that follow. You should all be proud of what you accomplished, you shined and proved your expertise in face of relentless criticism and doubt, few believed you could succeed, but we knew better and proved it.

    Anyone know the name of the acoustic guitar piece?

  • @tarpandas1
    @tarpandas1 3 года назад

    Stanley is the name we are stuck with today, as we get it's name in every AI book. The fact is that I didn't know it was sponsored by Red Bull. I mean c'mon, if this race was today, you would have known it would win just by looking at it's sponsorship. Seriously though, all jokes aside, It's lovely to a pioneer at something, always.

We survived the 80’s and I still don’t take old people’s meds. Nor do I take drugs, nor smoke, I’ll have a drink on a occasion but I’m not goin down without a fight🙌🏼rock on!
