    Hi Leo, I am an early-career research scientist. The academic world has many facets, each of which challenges me in different ways. However, lately, I have been struggling with establishing collaborations with other colleagues. I manage to secure funding, but I fall short in planning and coordinating with other research groups. This has become one of the most significant challenges I’m facing. Each collaborator is like a different world, and I find it difficult to understand what I need to focus on to move forward in this process. Sometimes, a meeting or interaction that doesn’t go well can lower my motivation and make an already difficult task even harder. I understand that all of this is part of the process and learning experience, which helps me keep going, but I’m now encountering difficulties I’ve never faced before.

    These tips are very helpful. I will try this method from today. Thank you!🙏 I think the reason why meditation is difficult - even after many years of practice - is because after we meditate we (re)enter the chaotic world which throws us off our balance again. Thats also the reason why I meditate: to stay centered:) What would also perhaps help, is by staying mindful throughout the day. Im still trying to do this but its hard lol

    Hi Leo, You mentioned: "Put notes down afterward, what are the actionable steps that I can take with every single episode. And between the episodes, actually start to implement. Write down what I'm gonna take on. Here are the things I'm gonna do. Put into action." This is what I am currently working on. When I read the Zen Habits blog, watch the Zen Habits podcast, or study FLA, there are a lot of practices that I want to implement. Even in one content, there can often be multiple practices. What I am doing recently is, after studying your content, I put it on a list in my Todoist/Asana. I have one long list because it can come from many content, and it can get overwhelming. But if I don't, I will forget most of it. What I am doing: - I need a focus session/container for learning. - Building one habit at a time. - Each day, have 3 most important tasks, with medium and smaller tasks. - And schedule on the calendar. Example of a list of practices I want to do from the last Zen Habits podcast about attachment: - Practice loving the heartbreak - Love my desiring heart But I struggle with those practices/methods/tips/tricks, because most of them I can't put into a time block. Yes, sometimes it can be in a session, but other practices are often trigger-related, happening multiple times in the day or less frequently. And the practices can be different for each content. My related question is: When can I practice what I learn from your content? Should I make a list in notes like Roam Research or make a list in a to-do app like Asana/Todoist, as I did, to implement it? Or is there some other way? So I am not just absorbing information and hoping it has some effect on my life. Thank you ♥️

    Really fine video. I am new to you. Help please if you have time. I am attached to a life long friend that I had to remove from my life. The person I grew up with is no longer there. I successfully removed her many years ago and was OK after 6 or 7 years...but she came back in and tricked me again so am in that horrible tightening feeling ...again. Just want to embrace the feeling and release but cannot find the way. Again, thank you whether you can help of not.

    • @zenhabitsofficial
      @zenhabitsofficial 5 дней назад

      Thanks for the feedback, and your question ... One way to look at your attachment to your friend is that you're really attached to the version of yourself that had this friend in your life. When you had her as a friend, it brought out a part of you that you still long for. So you might try to remember what that version of you was like, and find a way to bring that part of you out in other ways. Another way to look at the attachment is that you are simply feeling grief at the loss of the friend, and as long as you haven't processed that grief, then you'll still have the attachment. So let yourself feel the heartbreak of that, every day, as long as you still have stuff to feel. There might be anger/resentment to process as well. ❤️

I been your follower since long long years n a die hard fan of your teachings.Your writings in Zen Habits made a great n profound impact on my life n learned a lot from there. I still remember one of your wonderful post on MIT where u strongly suggest to define three top priority works every day from "To Do List" n focusing mainly on them during the day. Since i started applying this my life changed to a great extend in a positive manner. Well , since u encourage a lot your viewers to make comments n ask questions here so i dare to ask u one personal thing pls bear.. In one of your recent videos here u mentioned about having 6 kids or so. With all due respect May i know your views on having such a large family with so many kids . I live here in India n in this part of the world n all across the Asia generally people are encourage to go for small families with one of two kids maximum. Pls share your views on that. Thank u

      Thank you for following me all these years, and for the great feedback! To briefly answer your question: I wouldn't encourage people to have large families. For us, it was never a goal to have a large family like this (we are a blended family) ... but I have no regrets, because each of our kids has been such a blessing. For our kids, I would probably recommend smaller families - it's a lot easier! :)

    Um attachment being the root of all suffering is a concept of privilege - the privilege of not having to worry where your next meal is coming from, not having to worry if you will have a place to live in a month, having access to bathrooms and kitchens, having access to medical care, etc. Shakyamuni Buddha lived a life of privilege even after he left the palace - I guarantee no one was going to risk the wrath of the ruling family by letting their son starve. However, I do not in any wish to dimiss the idea of dealing with attachments to non-essentials. I am very fond of the line in Fight Club (as quoted in the english translation of Fumio Sasaki's book "Goodbye Things") "The things you own end up owning you".

    I'm posting this question before I watch the video so apologies if you deal with this question. This question is aimed with someone else in mind but I feel it often applies to me in a smaller way. If one is struggling in many areas of life at once, say exercise, eating, sleeping, work, money, stress, are there particular habits you recommend focusing on first? Are there some areas/habits that tend to be easier/more effective to focus on first, and have a stronger knock-on effect on other habits? EDIT: Now I've watched the video and I appreciated all the little details. I like the term 'urge surfing' too. I definitely have a few habits i would like to phase out.

    • @zenhabitsofficial
      @zenhabitsofficial 13 дней назад

      Good question! I think it doesn't matter as much which one you start with, as long as you start with one, and make progress. That said ... it can make a huge difference if you can get some good sleep! So I would focus on slowly adjust sleep time. Or exercise if that's too difficult.

    Love the term "urge surfing"! I quit Facebook years ago. When I have the urge to share a photo, I text it to someone I know will appreciate it. This solves my urge to share and builds real connections with people. Thanks, Leo!

    Great video, Leo. Thank you! I am faithful in writing out my MITs each day--something I learned from you many, many years ago when I read your book "The Power of Less". I first read it in 2010 and have re-read it a few times since then. In fact, I just re-read it earlier this year as a refresher. Such an inspirational and motivational read. This video expands on the topic even more and is leaving me with some new tricks to implement. My biggest struggle is filling up my day with the little things and letting them crowd out my MITs. I'm constantly letting the urgent crowd out the important. I have to work on that.

I'm not there yet with my routine and to be honest working in hybrid mode poses some difficulties for me in that regard. As you can suspect - it's much easier to follow a certain pattern on days when I work from home. Working from the office shrinks my mornings significantly so the best thing for me now would be to work on going to bed early and waking up early, too. I'll start small as advised to make consistency easier 🙂

    Thanks, Leo. I do love myself a good morning routine. I actually swear by this. I can feel the difference on the days where I am too rushed to take the time to properly do it. I have to second you on two things. Totally agree with the don't put too many things on the list rule. Every time I get overly ambitious with my morning routine, the less consistent I am with it. It is very easy to just skip the whole routine if I feel like you can't get the whole routine done perfectly. And I also agree with the don't get up 3 hours earlier to do it rule, because when you create a routine based around getting up much earlier than normal, at least for me, it inevitably fails. If I don't get up at my predetermined early time, I skip the whole routine. So starting with and maintaining a simple routine brings much more success than trying an overly ambitious one that you never get around to doing. Thanks for that reminder!

What you said about the thoughts fanning the flames and increasing the anxiety, helped me move from a contracted state (mentally curled up in a ball) to a more expanded one in which I can now access more tools to help me be in the present moment. Thanks for pointing the way out of the hell I had created for myself with my thoughts. : )

    Hi Leo, I'm struggling a lot with boredom lately. Mainly with hobbies to do at home. I love being outside in nature, I go camping and hiking often, but when I'm at home and have spare time outside of work, I feel like I should have a passion, skill or hobby to get absorbed in but nothing takes my interest. Do you have any advice on boredom or finding your passion? Thank you for your helpful videos and blogs ☺️

    Hi Leo, Thank You for this video.. This topic is important for me personally.. I am dealing with a yet to be diagnosed condition where I'm not making enough Red Blood Cells. Waking up early, Journaling and studying is extremely valuable for me... This condition is causing lack of deep sleep and fatigue. Do you have any suggestions on getting enough deep sleep to support waking up early? Many Thanks and tons of Gratitude and Respect. -deirdre

      I'm glad this was helpful. Thanks for sharing, I can see why it's important. I'm not an expert on deep sleep, but from what I've learned, I would suggest: * Don't drink caffeine in the afternoon or evening * Get some exercise, but not too close to bedtime * Have a relaxing bedtime winding down routine * No screens at least an hour before bed * Make sure your bedroom is dark, cool, without a lot of noise (use earplugs if needed, or a white noise machine) * Meditate to go to sleep - relax all the muscles of your body, slow your breathing, and visual a peaceful scene that's still and calm Other than that, I would just change your sleep schedule slowly if you're changing it. And don't stress too much if you're not perfect at it at first, just practice and keep trying.

      @@zenhabitsofficial It means a lot that you took the time to reply. Thank you for the suggestions and for being a good human :). While I do - (think I do:)) - many of the things suggested, after reading your reply, I realized I'm not making sure to be mindful of how late I consume caffeine or if the time I exercise is interfering with my sleep quality. It's nice to have someone help me double-check my actions - this will make a difference in my attention and hopefully my sleep. Reading your blog more lately, I'm ready to jump in to being Fearless.. Will be joining the group ASAP. Sending Love to You and your Family. Wishing you deep sleep, quiet, productive, early mornings

    12 days, not 20, to improve by an hour? Notable improvement within a fortnight. Two hours within a month is even better.

    My routine has evolved for a while now but currently it's a 3 hour period starting at 6 AM: - Thorough hydration and some light reading or cleaning for the first few minutes - A solid 90 minutes of protected creative time (or whatever else my priority happens to be at the moment) - Yoga warmup followed by 3 set calisthenics workout - 20-30 minute meditation walk (serves as cooldown, blue light exposure, and daily meditation practice in one) - A quick cold shower and cup of matcha or coffee is usually enough to shake off remaining fatigue as I start my work day What I love about it is that no matter how productive or successful I feel during the rest of the day, I can rest easy knowing I already did so many important things before I even started working. Leo is 100% right that you have to ease into it with small wins, otherwise it will feel like torture. I'd like to wake even earlier but it starts to create social difficulties when you go to bed before 10 PM...

    Hey Leo...thanks for another beautiful video.Following u religiously since 10 years or so. Delighted to make my comment here since u also encourage for the same. My question is it ok to have 6 hours of sleep in night add with 30 - 45 mins nap during the daytime. Pls answer. Thanks well in advance Manish

      Thank you for following me for so long! I can't really answer that, as it depends on the person, and I'm not an expert at this. However, a few thoughts: * 6 hours plus a nap might be sufficient for some people, but there's a decent chance it's not enough for you ... you might shoot for something closer to 7 hours plus a nap and see how that goes for you * A good way to tell is to notice your mood during the day - do you feel upbeat or irritable? Do you feel able to take on challenges or do you feel too depleted to do hard things? Do you feel up for exercise or too tired? You can also monitor your resting heart rate when you wake up to see if you're recovering well

    Helpful ...it is the commitment to getting up at the same time that's weak. I do it for maybe two days and then fall back to old habits. So it's a start, fall, start... thank you for your kindness in sharing freely.

    Leo thanks for this video! My favorite days are the ones where I wake in time to rise with the sun in an unhurried way. It’s just the getting out of bed and peeling myself from sleep that I have struggled with for, well, forever! So thanks for the renewed inspiration and tips.
