    Not sure how I feel about giving some random person on a website an inventory of my devices, let alone access to those devices. May as well pay the 5 bucks a month or whatever it is now to have nabucasa. At least then you know there’s a base level of accountability in the handling of your privacy. Considering there’s already services for these functions in aws, why doesn’t he just create a contrib utilizing it directly without passing it through his hands? At least then the users can audit the code.

    @SmartHomeTheory what about the Alexa Smart Home Skill? In my opinion my Alexa doesn't even try to search for new devices. When I ask to discover devices, Alexa replies right away saying it could not discover any new smart home devices and finally is giving the advice to enable Smart Home skill in the Alexa App. Looks like in order to enable SMART Home Skill an AWS account is needed which is free for the first 12 month only. Do I need Smart Home skill enabled or there is another way to do it? BTW I got the first Alexa edition (echo), don't know if matters or not.

    Great video. I have been using Emulated Hue to turn on and off lights/switches from Alexa. I have also incorporated input booleans to toggle scripts to run. While this has been ok, you still need to remember to say "turn on" or "turn off" to Alexa. I am interested in switching to node red but if I already have an entity setup in Emulated Hue, how to I switch it over to node red? Do I need to wipe out the emulated hue and clear the Alexa cache?

    I'm currently utilizing Emulated Hue and am able to expose everything I want, especially if I need unique control by utilizing Input_booleans. However! One Issue I constantly run into with emulated hue is when I add new devices to the configuration.yaml file. Of the like 10+ times I've done it, every single time when I go to add a new device or add a new input boolean I expose to run different automations, Alexa wont discover the new device. I ended up unplugging echos, deleting the file, adding it again, tons of stuff, sometimes i Just wait a day or two and all sudden NOW Alexa will discover it. I DO HAVE ONE Question, I'm considering switch to Nabu Casa for the simplicity to avoid running into the constant issues with Emulated hue. Is the the control through Nabu Casa to Alexa CLOUD all the time? Like if I'm home, and I've got Z-wave devices that I use Nabu Casa to expose to Alexa, does it got to go out to the Cloud then back to turn the Zwave device on? Or is it local like when Utilizing Emulated Hue?

    I use port forwarding to Caddy Server, which runs a reverse proxy. This needs only a few lines of config to get working. It gives HTTPS encryption via the free Let's Encrypt service. Using a reverse proxy removed the SSL termination function from HA, so this aspect is a bit more robust than when simply connecting directly to HA across the internet.

    One last thing to consider that i just discovered the hard way: because devices and scripts are exposed and seen as lights by alexa/google, it will turn the "all lights on/off" commands to be useless / dangerous, but its a necessary compromise

    • @SmartHomeTheory
      @SmartHomeTheory 2 месяца назад

      True. I never ran into this problem but then again I never say lights off but “goodnight” to turn everything off. If you really want to say “lights off” you could set up a routine called “lights off” and add all your actual lights to it. Should work.

    I absolutely agree with your statement that security and convenience are opposing goals. We can't have it both ways. If we rely on companies like the Big 3 to process our data, we know they have their own financial interests in mind either by benefiting themselves directly, or by selling our data to some other interest. I unplugged my Google Home speakers a year ago because they regularly tried to enter conversations I was having with my wife even though we hadn't engaged them in any way. We weren't relying heavily on voice assistance so we've not suffered much since. I am now a Home Assistant user, recently converting from Hubitat. I am interested to see how the Home Assistant voice technology matures and may decide to introduce it to my home at some point in the future. Thank you for the video.

    Thanks again! I gave up using the emulated hue method because Alexa set all devices at full brightness. Also state (on/off) didn't work and needed to refresh many times. But with node red is working flawlessly! Do you know how to activate scenes using this method? For example I have created a scene called "white light" that turns a smart bulb in white color at a certain temp/brightness level. Could I say "White light On" to Alexa and activate this scene? I'm asking because the color and temp properties are only available in US and UK as per the documentation. I live in Greece so I'm looking for a workaround, if possible...

       @cnkosm6536 So I checked the documention and I see what you're referring to about UK/US only. However, it says "SetColorRequest" and "SetColorTemperatureRequest" are both US-only, and yet mine works for both of these values despite being a UK model. Check your switch node has exactly "SetColorRequest" without quotes, and the rule is "==". Then for your call service node, make sure the service is set to "turn_on", the data field is set to JSON, and the data field value is set to "{ "hs_color": [{{payload.hue}}, 100] }". Also check you're linking the correct switch output to this node. If that doesn't work, go back into your call service node and change he Domain to "scene", then you can select from your scenes in the Service dropdown. Like you said, that should provide a workaround to this problem.

Stop ruining IOT space with this defective and unsafe platform and that is already YEARS. This is just risk for home safety and legitimizing dodgy "development" and strange politically involved individuals. .

    Window cleaning: My MIL bought one of those window cleaning robots for our family summer house. It was loud, slow and needed constant attention to be moved between the 18 or so windows. I think if you could integrate a wiper that moves along rails while spraying the window, that would be a really sleek solution. Toilet tech: Analyzing your toilet doings could have some great benefits, like sending that data to a health monitoring software to give you real time information on your current condition. You could get alerts of bad indications or nutritional recommendations. Automated ordering: Someone was on Home Assistant Podcast talking about how he automated his pantry items by adding an NFC reader to a kitchen scale and tags on the bottom of each item. So when he was done with an item, he would just weigh it and HA would know that there was 84 grams of sugar left in the bag. Then send that to a shopping list if necessary. Flexible vacuum cleaners: My first idea was to put stairclimber wheels on a robo vac, but that would make it a chunky boi. But some kind of telescopic wheels that extend from inside could work? AI voice assistants: Fully local AI is actually a thing. Ollama for example. Although you need a pretty good gaming computer running 24/7 in order for it to give you fast and intelligent responses. And probably a bit of machine learning to suit your needs.

      Great insights! The NFC approach to automatic ordering is interesting. Do you happen to remember which episode it was? Also, I didn't even consider stairclimber wheels, that's a much better concept.

      @@SmartHomeTheory I've searched all over for that episode, but I can't seem to find it. I'll keep looking and get back to you if I manage to find it.

    Thank you for this video very straight forward! Question Once I've sync all WIFI IOT devices to SD Card and Home Assistant and Created an account, Can i remove Raspberry Pi? or does it require to be plugged into WIFI Router permanently?

      You're very welcome! Glad it helped. Yes, you can connect the Raspberry Pi to your home network via WiFi so it doesn't need to be plugged directly into the router via ethernet. However, it's generally recommended to keep a wired connection for speed and reliability, especially since this will be the hub for your entire setup.
