Impressions of the Rhätische Bahn and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn - March 2018 (long version)

20 minutes of the best shots of three trips on the RhB and MGB; two over the Albula Line and one over the Oberalp Pass. The snow was playing havoc with the automatic exposure, but I feel the essence of the trip is still there.

The line is 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) in length, has a track gauge of 1,200 mm (3 ft 11 1⁄4 in) and is electrified using a supply at 600 V DC, supplied by overhead line. Approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) of the line is equipped with the Riggenbach rack system, whilst the rest of the line operates using rail adhesion. The height difference between the terminal stations is 272 m (892 ft), and ...

Many early EMUs: 2-BIL, 2-HAL, 4-BUF, 4-COR, 5-BEL, 6-PUL. Mostly filmed around Redhill, Merstham, Earlswood, East Croydon, Clapham Junction and Waterloo with some late steam around Salisbury. This is the hi-res version with corrected captions.

Keirunga Park is the home to the Havelock North Live Steamers and they have two open weekends each year - March and October. These scenes were all taken during the two events in 2010.
This video is a great look at British Rail (Southern) in the 1960s, featuring many early electric multiple units (EMUs) like the 2-BIL and 4-COR. It's amazing to see the old trains around places like Redhill, East Croydon, and Clapham Junction, and even some late steam near Salisbury! For anyone interested in British railway history, it's definitely worth watching. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/p/PLbkIohgbg3ZNXQ2yFZ92zn-sXxO350Aa2
Lovely Classic iconic footage of British Rail from the 1960s . Great Video ❤️Long before I were born in July of 1973 time . Would love to be transported back to these times long before Privatisation that accured in 1993 time to Today's generation of Locomotion and Rails that are a complete mess now. Love this Archival footage with Steam power still operating on the Main line, Beautiful Locomotion albeit Steam or Diesel power ❤️❤️❤️
As a regular Forest Way user this film has some incredible scenes. In particular Brambletyre Crossing - as a level Crossing! The bridge heading north towards East Grinstead , and the first tunnel shown, is now a steep climb the other side of Herontyre Drive, and led through to what is now Beeching Way.
Sad but people were buying cars So railways lost passengers
Lovely recorded history.
Never saw 6PANs/PULs in service as they were withdrawn along with steam traction n I'm 61!!😳😳😆😆
I believe those diesel electric units used on non electrified lines were supposed to be temporary until the lines were electrified then they would remove the diesel motors and use them as electrics though it didn`t work out that way and many of the lines were closed instead...
In the 1960s.....it was British RailWAYS.............get it right !!!
1. No need to be a douche about it. 2. Actually, it was British Rail from 1965.
More pleasy..
⭐️ came here looking for diesels.....but that Battle of Britain class.....oh boy ! ⭐️
The Three Bridges - East Grinstead secition and East Grinstead - Forest Row were in profit when the decision was made to close them, so one has to ask why. Btw, the 33 seems to be hauling the 5.05 pm ex London Bridge.
To build the A22 'Beeching Way' town centre by pass through the centre of East Grinstead, probably. From personal experience in 1964/5, I can recall that Forest Row station was surprisingly busy during the early morning and evening, though the line further east to Tunbridge Wells wasn't. The Three Bridges line could also get fairly busy sometimes. I used this line a lot when I was a kid. It's all a cycle trail and walking track nowadays and quite well used.
@@frglee I personally think that they should've kept the Three Bridges to East Grinstead section open and running and close off the other half for the A22. Particularly if Forest Row and the stations between there and East Grinstead were in profit.
Rare & excellent footage. Thanks for uploading. My experience of the Southern in the 50's & 60's was on the Hastings line where first the Schools class & later the Thumpers took us on our annual hols.......It used to break my heart returning home from Hastings knowing I had to go back to school.
Wonderful, the shots around Redhill are great, I live a few doors down from the Holmthorpe foot bridge I was taking some snaps there only the other day , thank you
Chris Barton I used to live down Wiggie Lane as a kid.
Like the details. The arrow of indecision on the tanks cab sheet at Waterloo. Cheeky cleaner
Has that hymek driver dropped a bollock at 2.55. Looks like all the signals at the end of the platform are on. Perhaps the trains not as fitted as he thought
@@jerryuk93 thanks for that, you’re quite right. I never saw redhill with semaphore. All colour lights on gantry there when I was going through it. Next signal protects junction at earslswood and isn’t far, just by Loco and the coal stage. So he has plenty of room
Was that a DEMU ?
Steve Hillier Indeed.
I worked on the Southern at Southern House and Battersea Park during this Period travelling from Norbury and later Lewes, and remember the Newhaven Boat Train often had a big green Peak Class Diesel Locomotive on it. How I miss those lovely old EMUs, and how little I appreciated them, I suppose I thought they‘d be around forever, the green Livery always looked more the part than that drab corporate BR Livery of the 70‘s. Thank you brought back fond Memories.
Peter J Hillier You are fortunate to have seen a Peak on the Southern as I don’t ever recall seeing one. I was born ‘64 and by the time I was old enough to notice most of the “good stuff” had already gone. Happy days
@@johnoxlade I believe that the peaks used to cover the Newhaven Harbour to Stirling motorail working.
Final few seconds are north of Oxted London bound
Such a shame, Forrest Row is a lovely place.
I prefer Forest Row.
How can 3 people not like this?
Beaching pulling a few strings.
Can't you at least spell his name correctly?
Although your videos were posted a while back, I’m just finding them now. Congrats for posting them and sharing an era long gone but never forgotten. Plus they’re great for me modelling Southern here in Australia!!
Ooh! At 5.30, an all-Bulleid consist; 3 coach loose set, six coach set of part Bournemouth restaurant cars and "standard Bulleids, and a single swinger on the end. Please Mr Bachmann and Mr Hornby, make me a Bournemouth set!
Have you any more footage, going towards Three Bridges perhaps ?
Sorry, no I don't.
Quick response after a 5 year old vid, thanks ! You might want a look at this site. www.disused-stations.org.uk/f/forest_row/index.shtml
How this country how gone down the tubes since those days.
Yawn
A superb piece of Archive and pleased that film of the unsung 4Lav units is shown they were never really in the limelight on the Brighton Line of course as they mainly did the stopping services I believe and I do have a couple of slides of them . Well done!
In the film you can see the Bw Rheine/Hauenhorst. My father worked there. That was my playground for years. :)
Thank you!The wind is part of the beautiful Swiss landscape! All the best for this!
GaisALPANZER love
Splendid film, thank you. 1 min, 40 secs into the film we see 2 BIL sets leaving Redhill, to the back in the Post Office bay platform it looks like a BTH Class 15 at the head of some vans. Can anyone shed any light on this working as no 15's where allocated to the S Region? Was the van train destined for Eastern Region? Any information would be nice.
It’s a 350 isn’t it.?
Yes, it's not a Class 15 it's an 08/09
Some superb film there! Really enjoyed that. :)
I live here
Your second MN was 35012 United States Lines. Couldn't see the others - too dirty.
Thank you
It's great that the 73s are still running.
Yes they are so flexible
I went to Rheine in 1973 and 1974. Great times. I did the run up to Emden and back behind an 012 Pacific, and a trip out to Osnabruck by train to get the steam turn back. I've still got boxes of slides, and both of my notebooks. Thanks for putting this on.
Oh very nice, I love films of the Southern Green EMU's. Take's me right back to the day.
Was There In 74 With A Group Of Friends A WeekRiding The Line I Got Lucky At Emden One Afternoon Rode On A 2 8 2 For Twenty Odd Miles Well Chuffed As They Say! Thanks For Posting .
Wonderful, just wonderful.
Very nice 8 mm film of Rheine 1974 when steam was still alive! I have been there too in 1974-1977 Best regards .
Thanks for the memories. I spent many happy hours spotting at Clapham Junction when a pupil at Emanuel School just up the road in Battersea Rise. Had a cab ride up and down the Kenny Belle platform on 82029. Happy boy!
Fabulous film. This line would have been well used today - terrible loss.
YES MICHAEL, IT IS A CRIMINAL ACT WHAT BEECHING, MARPLES AND OTHERS DID. THE GOVERNMENT SPENT FAR MORE ON ROADS THAN RAILWAYS THEN, YET ROADS DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE A PROFIT, BUT RAILWAYS DO. THE PEPETRATORS SHOULD ALL HAVE BEEN LOCKED UP WITH THE KEYS THOWN AWAY. FOR WTECKING THE LIVES OF SO MANY PEOPLE ; AS ALSO THATCHER SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOR THE SAME REASONS.. SORRY, I CANT USE LOWER CASE WITH NOT SO GOOD CLOSE SIGHT. I HAVE LOST BOTH LOWER LEGS, LONDON.
Thatcher - the UK's first female Prime Minister, during whose premiership more route miles of railway line were electrified than under any of her predecessors or successors? The PM who approved the Total Route Modernisation of the Chiltern Main Line from London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill?
@@KempSimon The Chiltern Line was much downgraded during the Thatcher era. It was not until the late 90's / 2000's that it was upgraded. She also commissioned the Serpell Report which luckily was never implemented. She was not a lover of the railway.
@@grahamlea2160 Not quite. This line was closed by Castle in January 1967. Beeching had left office as BRB Chairman in 1965.
Amazing to see the braking 012 061 with locked drivers sliding on the track at low speed, must have been quite oily!! (at 3:37) Thomas Eckhardt
Great stuff, many thanks!
fascinating film and no front yellow panels either
.....no headlights, very few speedos, AWS sometimes...... 'Appy days. Thank you for sharing - shivers down the spine!
WOW!! Good days!!! Thank you for uploading this, brings back memories, that's me sitting on the back of the train. Miss Sir Goss!! My dad passed away on the 19th of September 2015. Do you have anymore footage of Sir Goss? Regards Andy Goss
That's the only film I've got Andy. Seems like a very long time ago. Sorry to hear your dad passed.
Very interesting.
Thank you so much for posting this! My dad used to drive the track through Forest Row (as Fireman/Stoker) and this is the first time that I've seen the track as he would have seen it. I still walk the track through Groombridge, Balls Green and Forest Row and think about what it was like for him. Now I know.
My first visit to FR in 1961 was by train, all the way from Glasgow via Victoria...I thought I had arrived in heaven! Later I took 2 small boys on the train to Tunbridge Wells..such a treat for them! It is hard to believe that all that station and bridge etc has gone.
Tamara Sheen Sorry, that message should have been from me Libby Sheen
Is the tunnel the one you can see from the M25 now!!
What an excellent selection!! very nice!
