There are many in politics, even as I write, who, if they suffered a massive fatal heart attack, I would not mourn overly much. And then there people like John Smith. The divide is huge. This video speaks to a desperate need to keep our politics open and respectful and across party divides. In the end I believe there are decent honest people and there are self-serving shysters and we need to be able to tell the difference despite what party label they carry...

Interesting to revisit this time in our history, when the Tories crashed the economy and Labour was voted in to clear up the mess. Andrew Marr has an interesting take on the similarities (and differences) between John Smith and Kier Starmer here on RUclips called ‘Keir Starmer is more like John Smith than you think’. If you think a lot of him, vote Labour at the General Election on 4 July. That’s what he would do if he were still here. RIP.

This was probably the last time that the entire House actually paid homage to a superb politician; no in-fighting or rancour; indeed, it is unrecogniseable to the shower of politicos who currently sit on those venerable benches today. I've never voted for the Conservatives, however, thirty years ago, I could at least respect their opinion - because it was delivered with dignity & aplomb. How far this country's standards have fallen into the black morass of cynicism, open contempt & unbridled vitriol....truly unfortunate..
