I put stairs on a corner to form a weird little opening going up the whole side so if they climb you can put magma block at the bottom and at the top just need water to push to a hopper to make it in the chest.
I've seen the stairs in the corner trick when I finally went looking for tutorials. I'm not sure I'd trust my ability to not die somehow though! :D
@artofmkd there's times I do the stairs and they hit me right through the crack. If I'm right up on it.
