    This was (I think) the second scenario I ever played, and I’ve run it a few times since then. I think all of those times we took two sessions to finish it. Weirdly none of the times ever got to the lake for a confrontation with the BBEG. But yeah, lack of seperate player maps and Keeper maps is an issue a lot of scenarios have.

    The GM for our ungoing fantasy campaign had to cancel this past weekend, so I said I could run a one shot. Read Unland on the train to the location, 30m of reading and no prep time. Worked really well, me and the players had a really good time with this. Having the players come up with their lies at the end was a high point. FSLN is really a great book for when someone cancels and you need a scenario on the fly.

  • @--enyo--
    @--enyo-- 10 месяцев назад

    I first played this as a session zero for Masks of Nyarlathotep, and have run it twice as a prelude for The Fungi from Yuggoth campaign (first edition of the now Day of the Beast campaign). As a player we all used our own characters. Everyone getting invited to a party (with one player being an Egyptian belly dancer hired as entertainment) is a pretty easy hook. When I ran it as Keeper two players chose pregens (Farouk and Clayton - It’s funny how differently they were played by my players compared to the narrative retelling here), and the rest made their own characters. It meant they had a connection going into the campaign. The second time I used a modified Necropolis (Gateways to Terror) as a session zero where the characters (one playing Hewitt, one playing Jessica Pemberley, two playing their own characters) found the mummy in a tomb. I then set The Mummy of Pemberley Grange two years later with everyone playing their own characters. Taking inspiration from when I went through as a player I had a belly dancer NPC so they had someone who could read the handouts etc. It’s a fun scenario. Reminds me a lot of ‘The Mummy’ movie series.

    Thank you for your review. Unpopular opinion, but I actually think The Haunting is a pretty terrible scenario. It’s main value is just that it’s old so you can get the shared war stories thing and reminisce about Corbitt’s bed. It would work better as the opening to an ongoing campaign where the chapel of contemplation actually led to something, and they did all the library use/asylum visiting *after* going through the house (which makes more sense imo). That said I loved your recommendations for spooky stuff to put in the house. Mine is that in the bathroom they look in a mirror and see the bath full of blood, but when they turn around it’s just dirty water again. Why I don’t like it is chiefly to do with how smug it seems with the “Oh, these new [probably D&D] players don’t know they need to *investigate* first” <insert smug GM meme face here>. But there’s literally no reason to investigate. The only reason basically boils down to “It’s a Call of Cthulhu scenario”. Even as an experienced player going straight to the house just kind of makes sense, given the assignment. To rub salt into that investigation outside the house is totally irrelevant. Sure, you find some history, but it doesn’t actually help the players in any way. /rant Sorry. 😅

    • @mjrrpg
      @mjrrpg Год назад

      Mostly agreed. I do think the initial research is a waste of time and ends up giving the wrong message to new players (research is pointless), but I think the spooky house investigation is mostly fine and dandy, though it is basically just a haunted house ride with little to actually *do*. The scenario trying to tell players they should research before hand but at the same time giving no usual information is very silly. In the end the only 'useful' takeaway is something might be in the basement, which if players actually take to heart will just mean they go straight to the basement and miss out on the fun times in the rest of the house. Given how short the scenario is anyways, might as well just cut out the initial research, as taking the time to insert any useful information in the research would end up taking away from the surprise in the house. Or just play a better spooky house scenario like The Crack'd and Crook'd Manse ;)

    • @jeffmomsen9254
      @jeffmomsen9254 11 месяцев назад

      I REALLY appreciate the comment about the research. I am prepping to run this, and I was feeling the same way. How much research is enough, too much, especially for what ends up essentially a three encounter house. Bed, Blade and Body. Yes it can be deadly but the only clue that really matters is the misquoted Bible passage. And by the way, where did he GAIN that nugget of wisdom anyway? One thing I just noticed though that none of the reviews have mentioned. The way the house is mapped, a knock out the bedroom window leads to a fall of about 2 feet max. Because the bedroom windows face the roof of the first floor. Lol. One other thought. Has anyone else noticed. In this’d passage: “In 1914, the oldest brother went mad and killed himself with a kitchen knife, and the heartbroken family moved out.” That the kitchen knife was more likely Corbitt’s knife? The son Dominated to use it on himself when he got too close to finding Corbitt’s hideout?

    • @mjrrpg
      @mjrrpg 11 месяцев назад

      @@jeffmomsen9254 I completely forgot about the kitchen knife bit, that's pretty neat! Not particularly useful for players beforehand, but neat! If I took the time to prepare and run the scenario again, I think it could be useful to condense pretty much ALL of the handouts into a single handout. Maybe an article written somewhat recently that compiles the full history of the house, ending with the journalist saying they plan to continue researching the house. If the investigators try to contact the journalist, they find he went missing. While exploring the house, they eventually come across the journalist's rat-gnawed bones under a floor board, or stuffed into a wall, somewhere for an extra spook scene (or an encounter of some sort?). That could even replace the actual starting hook, with the investigators searching for the missing journalist, rather than poking around the house for a few bucks so it can be later sold.

    • @Devire666

      @@jeffmomsen9254 "That the kitchen knife was more likely Corbitt’s knife? The son Dominated to use it on himself when he got too close to finding Corbitt’s hideout?" My assumption was that it was indeed Corbit's knife. It just attacked and killed the guy. And without any sign of a murderer everyone just assumed the guy offed himself.

    • @Devire666
      @Devire666 Месяц назад

      I wonder if the scenario would work better if the investigators visit the house, encounter some spooky stuff, and only then start investigating the house's history. It would give them the reason to investigate and make players curious about the reasons for the spooky stuff, which in turn make the information they uncover interesting to them, even though most of it not really that helpful.

      I don't think the colours mean anything other than the order they were released (alternating green-blue-red). Oh man, about the firearms bit... When I ran it, I didn't even need to use Corbitt's Dominate spell! One player had already gone down from the dagger, then two of the remaining three failed their SAN rolls and suffered Bouts of Madness when they saw Corbitt get up from his slab. One was playing an Irish Republican bomber on the run from the British, so he hallucinated that he was surrounded by British soldiers and shot the other two players. He had already rigged the house with explosives, so he ended up detonating them, taking out Corbitt, himself, and the whole house in one go.
