1992 Tour duPont - Days 5-11
Taking place on the east coast of the U.S., this edition has many legends of the sport, such as Greg LeMond, Gianni Bugno, Laurent Fignon as well as up and coming U.S. amateurs like George Hincapie and Lance Armstrong. Michel Zanoli punches a motorcycle camera man and then later smacks Davis Phinney in the mouth in a final sprint. Great Stuff! This is the CBS version, not the "Zuperman" version.

1991 Tour duPont Cycling Stage Race (Complete)

Now with Donald Trump no longer sponsoring the race, the former "Tour de Trump" lives on as "Tour du Pont". The DuPont company (makers of Lycra, among other things) takes over title sponsorship. A young U.S. amateur Lance Armstrong makes his premier U.S. stage race debut in this race, and cycling great Sean Kelly makes an appearance on U.S. shores.

This is one of the earlier races of Laurent Jalabert before he became the mega-star of the Tour de France. Kurt Stockton is the first US finisher and thus becomes the U.S. Professional Road Champ. June 17, 1990. Side note: A little fellow named Richard Virenque raced this race in 1991 and finished 27th. Results: 1st Paolo Cimini, GIS/Benotto 2nd Laurent Jalabert, Toshiba 3rd Kurt Stockton, Amer...
1990 Tour de Trump (Complete)

Yes, it was that Donald Trump who lent his name to this talent-filled bicycle stage race over the eastern U.S. in 1990. I cut the fluff from the beginning so it pretty much goes right into the action. The overall race was a pitched battle between a young squad of Russian amateurs and the heavy-hitters of the pro peloton. There was a lot of drama packed into the individual stages- witness Davis ...
What a snooze fest! Good racing. But you would never know it from the narrators lack of enthusiasm. This guy sounds like he should be narrating a "How AAA batteries are made" video on PBS...
I don't know why people keep purposely bluring the videos to make the final film. How d Um b can it get trying to make it looks like a some kind of documentary movie? Some of them even put loud music background in their videos. Back in the days, the original was extremely clear as shown on TV.
Maybe they chose particularly bad routes but jeez the US looks really ugly. I guess I’m used to the classic tours but these routes are just highways with derelict building everywhere. Is the US really that unaesthetic? The stages closr to Boston looked nice though. The military music was pretty sad.
Gr8 commentary. Very scientific and pro.. Too bad the track announcer is a tool. 😂 yelln yelln
Take the most dope and your chances of wining increase.
I rode part of this course 'back in my day' , It wasn't flat I can tell you.
I remember this edition as if it were only yesterday.
Its really funny watching the Coors Light team completly ignoring Len Pettyjohn because he did not know what he was talking about.
LeMond was close to contracting with 711 but he did not want Greg Oravetz on the team, who Jim Ochowicz did want. LeMond and Bauer were buddies so that was how I think Steve Bauer got there. Then, 7-11 and LeMond was not happening for some reason. But, the other things I am sure of.
Trump has his own tour take that democrats
Thin frames, thin tires, thin me. Man, I miss 1990.
Amen brother. I just very recently and reluctantly bumped my tire size up to 25c LOL.
Z had the slickest looking jerseys.
1:06:34 Goodness Bobrik looks shattered here! I think he loses the tour the next day….
He's thinking he's going back to the Soviet gulag coal mine iron factory if he doesn't perform. He was a kid too, 19, and in a strange country, with the lead. Had to be overwhelming.

🤦♂he looked like one of the amateurs who was trying to be the "cool guy" with the pros
I smell hippies - R.R. Great to watch the old school guys! And the team chiropractors have been around sports for decades.
Breukink seemed on the upwards track towards establishing himself as a grand tour contender and winner up until the disaster of the '91 TDF. After that he gradually lost his way and never re-found the '90 TDF form.
LoL Lance using the Lemond bars in this race.
Lance was an amateur at this point - what's given is ridden
@@erikp6505 was he forced to ride in a La Vie Claire jersey when he was a teenager training? Maybe he really liked Hinault?
@@ta1920 probably someone gave him that jersey - they didn't have much money then

Phinney seems like such a jolly fellow.
Thought this was trolling at first but didn't realize it is all true. Trump was the biggest cycling Presidential supporter.
He'd put his name on anything back then, and was - and is - all about the publicity. Then Tour DuPont, which was also clever. I was there in a little town in PA and it was a BIG deal. Schools let kids out to see it!

Just saw a review and it was a high performance luxury middle van. My uncle had one and we made fun of him, but it seems pretty cool.

Thanks for posting this, so nostalgic!! I recorded this on VHS as a young teen and watched over and over. This is a huge motivator for me as a young athlete. Especially young Hincapie's breakaway attempt!
I always thought Raul Acala was one of the most impressive riders as a talent and as a person. He always was kind and complimentary when he interacted with the fans. He may have won a grand tour in the 1990's had EPO not hijacked the sport.
it was pride and vanity that hijacked the sport...EPO is inanimate LOL
Maybe. I remember when the team (PDM) he was on just abandoned the Tour. The suspicion it was EPO related.
This brought back a lot of memories. My dad and I would drive down to Wilmington for the prologue every year. Pretty inspiring for a junior to see all of my heros in one place!
US National Team update: Nathan Sheafor is a glass blower, Peter Stubenrauch is a cardiologist, Steve Larson died suddenly in 2009, Chann McRae is a police officer and coach, Bobby Julich is coaching and has a podcast, Lance Armstrong is on 30 for 30
hello everyone, please tell me the composition of the team Greg LeMond for the Tour duPont 1991 ???
Love the high quality video!
Kinda get the impression that the massive crash at 40 minute mark was caused by the camera.
Oh yeah, when riders were "thick" and jerseys were flapping in the wind.
Thanks for porting! This was my favorite Tour DuPont.
I was at the finish in Winchester VA... after the finish my friend (who was 4'11" at the time) walked up to Alexi Grewal and said "long day in the saddle?" Alexi looked down at him and said "Eight and half hours... NO SHIT"
Grewal was always an ass
This is awesome! My teammate Kurt Stockton won the jersey this year. Do you have 91, 92, or 93? You might like my documentary PRO - ruclips.net/video/rmzOtwYPeDU/видео.html
i used to travel to watch this race every year, as I started cycling while watching the '89 TdF on TV. I saw the second edition, then the Tour de Trump.....yup him in Central Park. It was the last time the race had his name, but du Pont picked it up in 1991 and I usually drove to Wilmington, DE to watch. In 91, I met a number of riders, but the coolest thing about this was that I asked for was given the number off Sean Kelly's bike after the final and I have it to this day. It is a fairly thick hunk of plastic with Brother written vertically with the number 115. When I used to race, I always had that plastic number in my jersey pocket. I considered it a good luck charm. Never won anything, best I ever did was a top-5 in a local race, but I never crashed while racing and as a Cat 4, that was a hell of a piece of luck. The race was meh, but I met a lot of the great riders of that generation: LeMond, Breukink, Kelly, Bugno and the late Fignon. Good times. Thanks for the reminder.
Just for the record, I hated this video I did. Yep, I produced it. One of my worst! I was trying to do an NFL films style and between not great race coverage and a VO that I overpaid for this was a disaster. But glad it's up here for all to see. Thanks Djevel.
it was really good man, don't beat yourself up...
I actually think there was a lot of good stuff in there about the later stages of the race that NBC missed. The crowds were amazing in New York and Massachusetts, but somehow the organizers never went back to this area of the country. I enjoyed every minute of this video. It is just a shame that the work was never continued after 1996.
I've been watching cycling videos since 1995, (WCP) and this is good, because it's different. I realize it's meant to appeal to a US audience and explains some simple stuff, but the info on Bishop losing his spot on PDM, getting a ride on Spago, etc. was really interesting, behind the scenes stuff. Documentary-esque.
If soccer can make it Cycling can make it...it should be done again. east and west alternating
The voice over is a bit dry (minus "a bit"), but the footage and script are fine. I wouldn't say this is a disaster at all. I've been watching cycling since 1987, when CBS covered the Tour In fact, I really like the footage of Alcala after the first TT asking about the times of his competitors and his teammate Breukink. Good stuff. 👍
Where's John Tesh and Phil Ligget?

I still don't think this was a bad idea
This guy didn't even include Sean Kelley in his, "big guns" intro? Are you friggin' kidding me?
Jajjajajajajajaja. Give him a break.
Hey Chris, thanks for comment. I didn't mention Sean as a big GC gun because he was here on vaca/training. He never really did much during the race, but support Erik. Would have been typical over-hype to mention him as big gun and then never pay it off.
I just commented about this at the top, but I met him and he seemed quite shy. I have the number placard from his bike. I asked for it after the final stage and I got it. Still do
Does anybody know why Alcala didn't participate in the 1991 edition to defend his title?
@@AR-lz2br He rode the Tour of Spain that year.
Didn’t Kurt Stockton win?
I don't think it ever rained in the 30+ years this race happened. I watched on tv or went down to watch in person almost every year. The Philly race is what got me interested in cycling. in 1988 I bought a Trek 360 12 speed from Steve's Bike and Fitness in East Norriton, PA. Saw Lance Armstrong race. In 1993 everyone was in awe when he sprinted up The Wall away from the pack on final climb. Was heartbroken to learn years later than he'd paid Roberto Gaggiola to not chase him. On Friday before race day they used to have a timed contest for fastest climb up The Wall. I thought about trying it but decided not to after I saw how fast the best climbers were. Well under 2 minutes. My best time on my own was maybe 3 minutes 30 seconds. The Wall is steep, like 18% but only for maybe 100 yards. To casual riders and fans it's an insane climb but to pro cyclists it's no big deal, they're used to much longer climbs. So strange to see them without helmets.
Where can I find these videos?? I want to collect vintage racing videos
Thanks for posting this! I was at the finish in Columbia, MD and saw the Arlington stage as well. I have some still photos from that stage on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/anderson/sets/72157656097627114/with/20761712245/ Some things I love about this video: -Roger Legeay smoking in the team car at about 50:30. -Sean Kelly still wearing toe clips -Was there really a camera in the middle of the road during the Pocono Circuit sprint? -Roger Legeay's Marlboro Lights on the dash of the team car -Those goofy "Funny Bike" time trial bikes with smaller front wheels
