Review: Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S - Solid & Reliable
Review: Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S - Solid & Reliable
The Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8 S is a short telephoto lens that delivers excellent background blur thanks to its large aperture. While it's ideal for portrait photography, it can also be effectively used for landscape and street photography, thanks to its relatively wide field of view for a telephoto lens. This professional-grade lens is designed for both professionals and enthusiasts. From 2019 to 2023, it was Nikon's only 85mm option for professional use on Z cameras, until the introduction of the 85mm f/1.2 S. Let’s take a closer look!

Review: Laowa FFII 15mm F5 Cookie - Tiny and Useful
Просмотров 77621 час назад
Review: Laowa FFII 15mm F5 Cookie - Tiny and Useful In the SLR era some people came up with the term "pancake lens" for very thin 40 to 50mm lenses. Because of the short back focus distance of mirrorless cameras it is very hard to make actually useful lenses for them that are as thin as a pancake though, hence Laowa came up with the term "cookie lens". This does not only sound more realistic bu...

REVIEW: TTArtisan 100mm f/2.8 Bubble Bokeh - A modern and affordable Trioplan? Meyer-Optik Görlitz produced a series of triplet lenses “Trioplan“, based on the Cook Triplet design from 1893, in different focal lengths after WWII. One of those lenses was the 100mm f/2.8 Trioplan, produced from 1956 to sometime at the end of 70s or beginning of 80s, when Meyer-Optik Görlitz was merged with Pentac...

Просмотров 98921 день назад
The Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S, designed primarily for demanding professionals and discerning enthusiasts, is one of the fastest autofocus lenses in the Nikkor Z lineup. While Nikon has a legacy of producing ultra-fast f/1.2 standard lenses, this is their first f/1.2 autofocus lens. Nikon’s history with f/1.2 lenses began in 1965 with the introduction of the Nikkor-S 55mm f/1.2. This was follo...

REVIEW: Viltrox AF 16mm 1.8 EZ. We all like surprises and this Viltrox 16mm 1.8 AF for fullframe was a big one. We previously reviewed the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 AF MKI and II and they were solid performers while being very affordable. But this 16mm 1.8 sounds way more spectacular on paper than an ordinary 85mm 1.8 lens and it even comes with some technology we haven’t seen anywhere else yet. Let’s h...

Review: The Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135mm f/3.5 is a vintage lens, originally designed in 1929. Renowned for its simple yet ingenious design and impressive sharpness, it's also celebrated for its remarkably light weight. Historically, 135mm has been the classic focal length for portrait photography, and the most popular telephoto focal length for most photographers. Therefore almost all of the l...

You really need to promote your RUclips channel on your main page. As someone who waste a lot of time warching camera related RUclips channels and today is the first time I stumble across this channel.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 Do yo mean on the phillipreeve.net blog site?
Good review, the falloff is indeed good and controlled on the 85mm Z. While the G lens had color fringing at 1.8 quite a bit I thought it had a bit more character than my Z. I kind of regret selling it in that regard.
@@MB-dq2gz You ca, always add some vignetting in post I'd you like that
The image showing a focus tab at 4:42 is of the Voigtlander VM 28/2.8, and not this Laowa lens.
@Bayonet1809 That's correct, I hadn't a picture of the 15mm Cookie showing the tab, and used the Voigtländer picture to show a focusing tab for those unfamiliar with a focus tab.
Hi thanks for the review. I have an A7r and an A5100 and I am looking to get a 15mm lens (or equivalent f.o.v) Which would be the better lens between this Laowa 15mm F5 and the Laowa 10mm F4 for aps-c. Light gathering is pretty similar and I’m not bothered about 36mp vs 24mp so I guess it comes down to sharpness and vignetting. Any thoughts greatly appreciated (now subscribed 😊)
I have not tested the Laowa 10mm, so it is difficult for me to say the difference, but I can tell you that by using that 10mm on your A7R you use it as an APS-C camera. This means that you will have two APS-C cameras. The lens does not cover the fullframe image area, when you crop to get rid of the black corners/edges you will have about the same angle as you have on A5100. If you decide to go for the 10mm APS-C, I'd recommend the TTArtisan 10mm ttartisan.store/products/102/?ref=deicqj08 it is 2 stops faster and has quite good performance, see my review of it here: phillipreeve.net/blog/review-ttartisan-10mm-f-2-aps-c/
Great review.
I love the format. Everything neat and tidy, presented in a concise form with examples. Keep up the good work!
A fair price for a fun little lens.
Looks sharp
I really appreciate TTArtisan releasing these lenses in M42. I hope they continue with this as I love having new glass for my Voigtlander VSL1 35mm Film camera. I have gotten great results from that camera with the TTartisan 75mmf1.5 and recently bought this 100mmf2.8.
Shame that aparature preset device have been omitted by TTartisan. It is very useful today for film shooters or those photographers who still uses classic DSLR.
Great review. The Bokeh is beautiful.
Subscribed! Very well done review!
If you compare it to the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM, you can see that the Nikon 50mm f1.2 S's autofocus is slow and noisy. It's also unnecessarily big and heavy. If you look at the Sigma 50mm f1.2 or the Sony 50mm f1.2 GM, you can see that it can be done better, smaller and lighter - and if you look at the Sigma, also for half the price. In my opinion, this Nikon 50mm f1.2 lens urgently needs a Mk II update.
Excellent review! And very professionell! Thx Martin!
Great review! Especially showing sharpness at several distances, which is rarely shown so clearely. The only missing information is a comparison between the ttartisan, the biotar and the helios. Adding this would habe truly meant coming full circle
@weakrecession Thanks, I'm not sure if the comparison is a missing point in a lens review, this is a review of the lens in the hand. Normally, there are dedicated comparison articles separately.
@@PR-Reviews you're right, only after your brilliant review, I was really starting to wonder how these lenses would compare... Maybe you manage to find the generous and happy owner of both other lenses and we could be looking forward to an interesting part 2 😁
@@weakrecession Actually I found one, and upon my review, he bought this TTArtisan lens. He took a number of images side-by-side with both lenses, and the images from this lens were not less sharp than from the original Zeiss (version 2).
Thx for the Test - well done! At 13.11 minute it was in Saarbrücken?
Not sure about the exact 13:11, but yes, all the old industry environments are from Völklingen Steel Mill in Saarbrücken.
@@PR-Reviews 13.11 the location was in Saarbrücken www.google.com/search?sca_esv=91c658cd3c6ca43c&q=saarbr%C3%BCcken+schloss+brunnen&udm=2&fbs=AEQNm0A6bwEop21ehxKWq5cj-cHa02QUie7apaStVTrDAEoT1GgxBwUH1JWFUZ5PObPyzN6ZUsA_o5eBQ6q3XCohkYS3mTEkwUC4iTMPwdKflbOVcN5FFxU6_buwbyitoyl27vS7-oVDmUo6ScTZ3FweHU41Go8JIf4neWM2-QIHHXO7_mnXNHeRD3XsFuljgIykJtV4c-1M7yAc66vKda3oQpp1Vsa7vg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiOu_-j3rWJAxWRgf0HHWtfEK4QtKgLegQIERAB&biw=1680&bih=923&dpr=1#vhid=6AuFuZ6WKvXY0M&vssid=mosaic
What is DX mode?
@tonypaulprince In Nikon cameras, the DX mode makes the full-frame camera act like an APS-C camera. It does this by using the Centre part of the sensor only, as large as on an APS-C camera. You will get exactly the same effect as if you had been using an APS-C camera. So, it converts you fullframe camera to an APS-C camera.
This is an awesome lens. But too heavy for most practical purposes. I think the 200mm f/4 AI-S is a better option.
Awesome review! I like Pergear lenses.
What mount does it have?
Mine has M42 screw mount, but it is available even in Praktica B mount
@@PR-Reviews Nice! But M42 is the better one to have.
Please do a review, I am fascinated by this one!
We have reviewed this lens, but it is only in written format, as a text-based blog post on our site. Here is the link: phillipreeve.net/blog/review-laowa-28mm-t1-0-argus-the-worlds-fastest-28mm-lens/
It's, as you said, a matter of taste. I really dislike this bokeh effect.
Great review. Thank you.
Thanks for the honest and balanced review.
NIKKOR 200mm f2.0 G ED VR (ii) renders better and sharper, also with better contrast and saturation😮😊 and unfortunately because of the vintage lenses collectors prises for this Ai-s manual version became almost on the same level with more modern G ED VR version...😂
@antontaranenko8824 Yes, but as I have stated in the title, this was the first 🙂
Thanks for the great review!
Excellente video
Were you using the techart autofocus adapter?
@@Dariusdd Partially yes
I have this in a later version, and I agree that it is a great lens. However, as I have new lenses for mirrorless, I almost never use it.
one of my favorite lenses, I own the later version and its amazingly sharp for being such an old lens. I love the Sonnar bokeh its just fantastic, the 180mm CZJ 2.8 has even better bokeh I think.
Thanks for the review. I recently got the multicoated M42 black version. Some years before I had a bad copy of the Prakticar-Version. That bad copy was clearly inferior to the M42 copy I have right now. East German lenses commonly suffer from large sample variation and the newer they are the worse it gets. Did a little comparison with my Minolta MC Tele Rokkor 2.8/135mm. My Minolta is a little sharper wide open, but has more color fringing and is larger and much heavier.
I have a later version of this lens, from around the late 70s-early 80s perhaps (the black version). I am still impressed by the quality, colors and contrast I can get out of the lens and it's a pleasure to use
Brilliant review! You've helped me to make up my mind to buy one. I'll definitely follow your work from now on.

Am ordering a copy to complement my 40 mm f2 for my Nikon Zf body an excellent review 😊
@colinfeilen988 Thanks, and thank you for using my affiliate links to order your copy.
Same thing to complement my 40 /2 and viltrox 20 2.8 on my zf. In my country it is on sale at 140eu vat included. Using my 1.2S glass for my pro jobs on z8, it's such a pleasure to have third party lenses very affordable and still having a good enough quality
Good real world review, I'm picking one up next week
Please consider using one of my affiliate links, many thanks in advance.
Wonderful review
I have the TTartisans 100/2.8 bubble bokeh, one more of this type lens I don't need.
Great review, thank you! I have it on ore order. Since this is mostly a character lens, the flare is desirable for artistic shots.
You can keep that I will stick with my 500cm. Thank you.
China begins to control the fate of thieves in their hands
it would appear to be a faithful Biotar reproduction with lesser coatings
I have this lens and I love it and you echo most of my thoughts on image quality. I love the compact size and weight. Side note ….i enjoy your channel you do an excellent job !
The best review of this interesting lens I found today. Thanks.
Thanks for the nice words and for watching. If you want to buy this lens, please consider using my affiliate links, thanks.
@@PR-Reviews Thank you, my friend. I hope they will make the same design lens with short flange distance. Biotar 58mm would be the best choice for me. This one absolutely gorgeous lens but it's weight and required adapter turn me off. However I'm a big fan of it's bokeh.
TTartisan Helios 58mm should be their next goal, I will buy it in a heart beat.
I’d love it if they crossed this end of the business (vintage optical designs) with their autofocus lenses. Getting something like a 40mm f/1.5 Biotar for X-Mount with all electronic controls? Classic optics with modern convenience. Or, just a manual focus 40mm Biotar for APS-C sized sensors. So much of the charm of these lenses is lost on crop sensors, since the “flaws” that make them fun live at the edge of the image circle. Shrinking the image circle and focal length ought to be possible, and it’d also probably be a hit.
@@thebitterfig9903 Autofocus classic lens designs would be frankly, selling like hotcakes, people love stuff like that today.
Unlike the Biotar 75, the Helios 58 are plentiful and cheap. People will just buy the Helios instead.
@@musa7606 Helios 58 are drying up because of Ukro-Russo war. There absolutely nothing wrong with TTartisan made a copy of the Helios 58 with better coating on it and better build quality. The Helios lineup is a mess of mixed bags, early ones are amazing, the ones from the 80s and 90s are big sus.
The 3d pop at 16:38 is nice. $269 -289 for a new classic lens sounds reasonable.
To mention are the other 75mm options (because rare and therfore easy and useful to compare, EVEN if this one is probably the only one of this kind of background... or the petzle?) ..Such as by Voightlander and the probably very interesting Samyang AF.
I put a list of alternatives in the text-based review on our blog site. Head to there and have a look!
Very thorough review! Thanks for sharing your findings.
