Britford lock and bridge - River Avon Navigation Salisbury
This is one of the few signs left of the River Avon navigation between Salisbury and Christchurch. The remains of the lock are on a manmade cutting that runs from Harnham to Longford castle. Work on the navigation started in 1675 and it opened in 1684. There are records of barges operating between Salisbury and Christchurch, however the navigation was abandoned in 1730.
The brickwork and basic structure of the lock are in surprisingly good condition considering it's age, although there have clearly been remedial works carried out over the years. The wooden lock gates are long gone, the top gates would have been where the weir is today and the bottom gates at the upstream end of the modern...

Llangollen Canal on NB Chiltern with Chas Hardern - Late 1970's
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.4 года назад
A trip up the Llangollen canal with Chas Hardern and Wynford Vaughan-Thomas in the late 1970's (probably 1978), on Chas's 1946 all wooden narrowboat Chiltern. Chas operated Chiltern as a camping boat. However camping boats fell out of favour and Chiltern was sold to what is now The National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port in 1979 where the intention was to fully restore her. With grant funding...
simply stunning love this
Best wishes with Chiltern. This film was a wonderful experience with Wynford Vaughan Thomas. I got to travel to some very interesting and exciting places with this boat. I still have my other boat from this period 'Dorset', an Anderton Co/Mersey Weaver 'knobstick' boat.
Hello Chas, lovely to hear from you. It must have been quite an experience filming this. Wynford Vaughan-Thomas is a very good presenter and having traveled this canal myself a number of times in more recent years (on your hire boats!), it's very interesting to see how it was back then, especially the lift bridges! Are you able to shed any light on when this was filmed.....Despite lots of research I wasn't able to establish the exact year!
Thanks for that video. I just been down there magnet fishing and we found some interesting items. I wanted to know a bit of history about it.
Excellent! Did you manage to get that old motorbike out?!
@@jriddle6050 sadly I did not. I didn't bring my grappling hook. Its a shame its in there really. The only thing we did manage to get out was a pick axe.
I loved this!
Llangollen my home town ❣️
Beautiful. Well written and well narrated. I wish the Saltisford Canal Trust success in their rebuild.
Yes, the presenter is a real class act.
