There is a far more down to earth explanation for the images on the Turin Shroud. The negative image on the linen cloth was created by soaking the cloth in a photo-sensitive chemical known to alchemists at the time and then projecting the image of a corpse onto the wet cloth using a camera obscura, a technique known to some early artists, such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. The head was done separately, explaining the slight mismatch in scale relative to the torso. This explains why a life-like image of a face appears only in the negative of the image when photographed, not in any photo itself. An Italian physicist and his team found in 2004 a second, fainter image on the back of the cloth (also a negative). It had been created during a trial run to check that the camera obscura would create an image properly. The cloth was a genuine burial shroud brought back from the Holy Land by a pilgrim. The blood, flagellation marks and wounds were expertly added to the corpse by the hoaxer before it was photographed and then eventually bought by the Roman Catholic Church, the clever forgery duping everyone into believing that it was the genuine burial cloth of Jesus. The head was photographed separately, using either a suitable live model or a marble head, sculptured to look the part and with blood stains added to the linen afterwards. If Christians believe that the four gospels accurately describe the death and burial of Jesus, then they HAVE to dismiss the Shroud of Turin as a highly sophisticated hoax. This is because St John's Gospel states clearly that several strips of cloth and a separate face cloth were found in the empty tomb: John 20: 3-7: "So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen." In other words, according to St John, Jesus was NOT wrapped in a SINGLE burial shroud. Christians cannot have have it both ways. Either they believe that the gospels accurately record what was found in the tomb or they believe that the Shroud of Turin is genuine. They cannot believe BOTH. Perhaps Christians should start reading their New Testament more carefully before embracing the latest claim of authenticity by a team of scientists, some of whom are also Christians and therefore cannot claim to be totally unbiased because they are looking for evidence that will confirm their faith.
