Massive DIY Flycutter for the Bridgeport Milling Machine
Lately I was in need of a massive fly cutter to flatten bar stock on the Bridgeport Milling machine .. I was inspired by the tool built by "Inheritance Machining" and decided to give it a go ..

    July 9 2022, The Hobby Machinist; Practical limits of an R8 Spindle? The R8 collet system's limitations is not the only concern. The spindle bearings take a beating when the machine is pushed too hard. On a previous job, I had a co-worker that fabricated a 12" fly cutter to use on a Leblond mill with a 30 taper spindle. It wasn't long before the bearings were trashed in the spindle. I didn't see the bearings personally, but was told they came out in little pieces when it was disassembled for repair. I have a few 1-½" end mills, but they only get used on the Cincinnatti horizontal with a 50 taper spindle... and I'm pretty easy on using them. I'm pretty easy on my machines... I want them to last my lifetime, at least. -Bear ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I can’t provide a useful answer to the question but from the sidelines I see this as a very interesting and relevant topic. How exactly will people coming up learn if they don’t have the long time mentoring from senior hands, fathers, etc? Yes, we learn from our and others’ failures but hopefully it doesn’t cost us a digit or two in the process. How do you find out how short is too short to hang on to, or how long is too long to safely stick out? I have to think much of this is so ingrained in the brains of those of us who have literally grown up around building things. We have developed some kind of sixth sense of what is going to hold and what isn’t, and what is just plain crazy so don’t even go there. I have a new hire at work, he is not stupid by any stretch, but almost every action I see is lacking in good engineering practice. The blade on a razor knife extending full out to cut a piece of paper; pushing the off cut side of the sheet on the table saw; bearing down on the drill bit even though it’s clearly dull and now smoking it’s way through the wood, etc. He’s nearly 40 years old and not in his chosen profession now (he’s actually an architect but isn’t able to work here in that field yet) but still, some of these things are what I know as life skills. How can somebody make it this far without picking that up? Back to the real question though, how does the next generation learn this stuff when the old guys aren’t around anymore? As much as I like charts and spreadsheets I don’t think that’s going to do it. We have charts for things like feeds and speeds but as soon as we dig them out we supply the caveat “..just remember these are only suggestions..”. Maybe they do provide a starting ground but again, the background information of how much horsepower, what material, etc etc etc would make for an impossible number of variables to be useful. There’s got to be something inside lurking in the background to say “whoa, that’s not right..” But how to get that across in less than a lifetime? -frank ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Ed and Jr asked for your email and you seem to be failing to address this issue. So Ill address it. Ed and jr is right. That jason hull is a lame brain that doesn't up from down. How many forums, reports and other tech bulletins would you like me to post here on this topic? If you aren't aware yet what the real issue is, then Ill explain it in more detail for you. RUclips is full of people teaching each other bad habits that have no place in the shop, then you have people like jason hull tossing a monkey wrench into the mix defending those bad habits. If you're going to post videos and engage in something, do you think it might be helpful that you do some research first before doing something that is, on the books, WRONG and will cause damage to your and others machines seeing how blindly people follow other people off a cliff? Whats interesting is ed and jr pointed out on their original comment that he didn't think you would listen and I have to say, it sure seems that way now doesn't it?....

    So I said something about the limits of an R8 spindle and that's considered negativity and hate? Where is your email address. I have some things to send you if you want to listen to that muffinfrock who has no clue about anything he spewed out here. I cant post it here because YT wont let me. That clown who long winded his hate speech is exactly what I'm talking about is wrong with YT. You go ahead and listen to him and you will be sending your entire milling head in for a complete rebuild sooner than later. And FYI, My Bridgeport is over 40 years old and I've never had to have the head rebuilt, it has its original spindle and its in great condition BECAUSE I FREAKING OPERATE IT WITHIN THE SET LIMTS OF THE R8 SPINDLE SPECS. Now what's your email. Ill send you everything you need from other experts who will say it like it is if you want to ignore what I said and listen to your hate ape who had to mouth off on my comment. Its because of jerks like him that I start hostile commenting because I've been though this so many times I'm sick of the freaking games. Email add. Ill send you all the stuff you need on the R8 spindle and what you're in for if you want to go down that road. The fact that he thinks balance is something on a fly cutter is more than enough proof to show he has no clue what he's talking about. You have a single point loading on the work piece spinning around many many RPMs. Its imparting a tremendous force on that R8 spindle because the spindle is small. Its also tearing up your bearings. Balance is gone and has sht to do with anything. I'm so SICK of these whiners continually interjecting acting like they know something when they clearly don't!

  • @EdJratNight

      @@matsworld9386 Have you ever added a pipe to a rachet or wrench to break loose a nut or bolt? You have one cutter making contact and exerting a large force multiplier on that R8 spindle. Its going to wallow out the spindle and ruin it. Something like that needs a much larger spindle. Plus, you can tell you also have quite a bit of wobble in that as it is. Vibration plus the extra force. R8 spindles aren't designed for anything like that. I'm sorry of your machine shop G-d over at inheritence doesn't know this but its a fact. You need a normal fly cutter, at a normal size for the R8. Or, get a larger milling machine with a much larger spindle.

    • @jasonhull5712
      @jasonhull5712 3 месяца назад

      @@matsworld9386balance is important sure. And a good clean spindle and mating surface. If the mill “isn’t capable enough” then he should have the same issue with about half the tooling operations used in the Bridgeport. Don’t listen to him. Take it with a grain of salt my friend. Use your best judgment and be careful. The Bridgeport is a good and very capable machine. He would really shit his bed if he seen some of the shell mills we use. Lol People are always going to bring negativity and hate. Go check out his videos… oh wait, he doesn’t have any. Look, if you power it up and it’s banging and vibrating trying to walk across the shop floor then you better shut it down because you have a problem. But the whole point of the mass is to smooth out the cutting operations and prevent the shock load on the spindle. You may need to rebuild your spindle after ten years due to wear and tear. But thats nothing a full size vertical knee mill can’t handle. Don’t think everyone who comments is some master machinists. Mine is 10” and has a counter balance weight that’s adjustable. I Use good quality carbide and pay attention to the chips coming off. I’ve had the same setup for years and still haven’t had to even replace a bearing.

    the electronic ballasts suck and LED lights suck. i still use f40t12 fixtures that are pre-heat with the starters and some of the ones i have are from the early 50s and still work no issue. but the new electronic ballast struggles to last 5 years and the tubes dont last as long either, and LED lights are just harsh and boring and start to flicker.

I upgraded the ballast to electronic and then changed the bulbs .. so, double cost there . rather than just doing the LED bulbs that have no need for a ballast .. anywho, live and learn .. for now they work great and as mentioned, the instant on and off works great with the occupancy switch I have installed .. lights go on when I enter and turn off 5 mins after I leave .. works great ;)

      @@matsworld9386 that is a good feature and i definitely see the advantage that LED lights have over the fluorescent lights. the big one is that most fluorescent lights will not start below 50 degrees which is an issue in places that are not heated. they also do take more power...
