What was interesting was the way Mr. Nelson was able to close the distance simply with little effort. The key to me was in his feet! The movement was, he always said was to be balanced and he often compared the movement to dance or tennis. His blocks and blows from there and gave him amazing speed, power and awareness in a 360 direction. The blows to the chest could be used to stun and converted to other blows, These tapes are so invaluable! Indeed as I have grown older my rhythm and timing are off and I can not balance myself as I did when I was taught by Mr. Nelson (Charlie) many years ago. Clearly though it is me and my lack of skill because even at his advanced age you can see how quick and deceptive he was and those joint locks hurt!! I want to come to your school but I live far away.. Thank you so much for posting these!!
Charlie taught using only natural movement and his system is so unique in that the better you get at it the more natural the movement becomes. If you watch the mongoose and cobra the mongoose always wins and uses evasion to kill the Cobra with little movement or effort.
Mr. Spiegel I want you to know that we once corresponded and that I did in fact contact Herbie.... He had recently lost his wife and was not of a mind to speak to anyone but I wanted you to know that I did mention you to him and he sent you his best.
@@BuddhaLove77 Thank you, I am just recovering from major spinal surgery and finally back on my feet. I had state of the art spinal replacement of 11 disks in my neck and thoracic spine. I had to use my self-defense twice in a wheelchair and the Nelson system saved my life again. I now have a titanium spine and I am back no stitches only surgical glue for my neck and staples for my back.

At first, I'm like, OK, that's Johnny, and that big guy must be Bill Underwood. Then, I'm like, Oh, wait. That's Lou Ferigno - the Hulk. So........
I have several videos of Bill Underwood and Audio book recollections of his experiences fighting in World War 1. We post all this self-defnse on our facebook page Charles Nelson Self Defense Systems. The audio book was never release to the public. Its really amazing when Bill tells of how life was back then and his experiences that he lived through.

Was that his house or school...just wondering because it looks very small...I guess it does help to train on tight spots incase you gotta defend yourself if your in one
That was his school....
Yes this was his school where he taught for 50 years. It was on 72nd street in NYC. I was lucky to train with him for 15 years and even went to AK to train with him right up until his passing at 88 years young. He was strong agile and capable right up to his passing and I continue to teach the same way he taught me.
Defendu is incorrect. Defendu was created in the U.S. sometime before1926 by William E. Fairbairn and Eric A. Sykes prior to World War II. Bill Underwood is a Canadian comrade and he created Defendo in 1945ish.
