Thanks so much for your videos they’re very well done, you have a great teaching style. I just have one question on this lesson, I had learnt that you just use ehara to make agent emphatic sentences negative. And that it's often preferred with the past negatives to change the nā to i. Ehara I Pāora te kai I tunu. Paul didn’t cook the food. Do you have a reference where ehara I te mea is found?

Would you say Haere ra to someone leaving, if you're also leaving? Or should you say ka kite ano?

    •  Месяц назад

You could say either. Ka kite anō is technically "see you again", so it implies you'll see the person again, irrespective of who's leaving. Haere rā can absolutely be used if you're leaving as well as the other person.

Kia ora Whaea. When do we change "he" to "ko?" In another comment you said it's when we add "nga", so shouldn't "he teitei ngā rakau" be changed to "ko teitei ngā rakau?" Aroha mai for being a perfectionist. 😀 Tēnā koe.

    •  8 месяцев назад

Ahhh that's a good call out. Generally speaking, "he" is indefinite, and "ko" is definite. And generally, in English, "a" or "some" are indefinite, whereas "the" is definite. "Te" or "ngā" would never immediately follow "he". I.e. you wouldn't see "he te rākau" in that instance, that is when you need "ko" I.e. "ko te rākau" = the tree | "ko ngā rākau" = the trees | "he rākau" = a tree/some trees. In this example, ngā doesn't immediately follow "he". A description - "tall" - immediately follows "he". He teitei ngā rākau = the trees are tall. If we were to make this a definite sentence with "ko", we could say "ko ngā rākau teitei ēnei" = the tall trees are these ones. Or, "ko ēnei ngā rākau teitei" = these are the tall trees. In these examples, "ngā" and "ēnei" immediately follow "ko". The adjective is moved. That is a lot of explanation... hopefully it helps explain somewhat?

0:36 I find intriguing that the Te Reo Māori definite article "te" translates as "the" ! Is there any ressource or documentation available that would explain whether this is an original Māori word, or an English loanword ? Thanks a lot for your fantastic videos, much helpful - much happy to watch and study this ! Cheers

    •  8 месяцев назад

maoridictionary.co.nz normally specifies if a word is a loan word from English. The results for "te" are here: maoridictionary.co.nz/search?idiom=&phrase=&proverb=&loan=&histLoanWords=&keywords=te no reference to it being a loan word. I don't believe it would be, as it is an integral part of many sentence structures, which I imagine existed prior to the colonisation of NZ (though I could be wrong, of course!). There is a government resource on the history of the language here: nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/maori-language-week/history-of-the-maori-language nothing about "te" that I can find - but it is an awesome resource for the history of the language, if you are interested :)

Sometimes I see 'ka...au' used in a sentence for the present tense e.g. 'ka whakaaro au ki te haere ki te wharepaku'. Why is this? Are there certain times when 'ka' is used instead of 'kei te' in the present tense?

    •  8 месяцев назад

Indeed there is. Ka is often used for storytelling, not something the videos have gotten into yet, I hope that helps!

tēnă koe ! A quick question, if I may... We first learned, in the fantastic lesson "Describing people", at 1min30, that the particule 'a' "must be used before using the name of a person". However, in today's great video, the particule 'a' is first used, but is then omited on a latter example : 1:12 He kaiako a Maria rāua ko Ana. 4:56 He tākuta Ana rāua ko Rewi. Since 2 persons are described in both examples, using the same pronom 'rāua', I'm wondering what's the role of the particule 'a' here please, and whether it can be omited or not ? I hope I'm not missing anything here, Thanks for your generosity ! Appreciate it very much

    •  8 месяцев назад

Oops! I have made a mistake!! There should be an "a" prior to "Ana" - you have understood perfectly and correctly picked up that there is something missing here, thank you for noticing this!

A quick question, if I may : Regarding the orthography of "ā" vs "aa" : I read somewhere that they are equivalent. Now I read "ātaahua", which confuses me : is there a rule of the thumb, or should the orthography just be learned by heart, please ? Thank you, again, for the wonderful videos ! Loving this ! (Greetings from France)

    •  9 месяцев назад

You make a great observation. They are indeed interchangeable. Some regions use the macrons I.e. ā, others don't use macrons and use the double vowel instead. Using the double vowel is also a workaround if you cannot access the macron on your keyboard I'm not sure why ātaahua specifically uses both... I do feel the a's in the middle are pronounced a bit different, as if two words: āta Ahua, perhaps that's it, in which case I don't know how you recognize that it's an exception from ā for those middle vowels.... sorry it's a gray answer! I hope it helps somewhat

4:38 "reka" is Russian for "a river; a stream"... You are confusing me ! :D Just kidding : I love that there's no grammar cases, and only a few distinctions between masc. / fem., sg. / pl., in te reo Māori. I do believe, along with others, less grammar or less vocabulary in a language give words more evocative power (words become more "poetic"). Like in French (my native tongue), that has few synonymes compared to ... Russian, once again. This is for me a real treat, after years of русская грамматика )) This is a real joy for me to learn some basics of the beautiful te reo Māori, with the help of your videos, in order to discover the beautiful sonorities of the language, along with the interesting morphology. Thanks for teh great videos ! You rockkk
