Feel free to try OpenBSD too :). I've been using Debian with KDE Plasma for a while now, I love the stability. I use Ubuntu for servers. I've been testing OpenBSD now as well. I've tested many different distros in the past. I have to deal with Windows 11 once a week for our projection software we use at my church.

I always get used to Windows and macOS, but I do like free and open source software. I have no proper experience with Linux desktop (KDE,, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE, MATE, etc..), but I do have get used to Linux server (Ubuntu, RHEL, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, etc..). And I like how gaming on Linux gets strong support for the OpenGL and Vulkan APIs, as gaming on DirectX and Metal is sucks.

I legit install both Mint and Arch without a USB, Just made a tiny partition on my drive haha Mints pretty cool. I personally use CachyOS which is Arch based. Easy to acquire gaming optimized Kernels and don't even have to manually deal with your GPU drivers, unless you decide to.

Here's an explanation about the issue you're facing with VMD: On some computers the Windows installer does not detect any drives with Intel VMD enabled due to a missing IRST driver, you can find the Intel IRST driver on your manufacturer's driver download page and extracting it on something like a usb (preferably one that is not the same one you're booting into the installer with) and then selecting the extracted folder on the windows drive selection on "Load driver" and selecting "Browse...". If you want to know what Intel VMD is, it is essentially a technology used to manage multiple NVMe SSDs more efficently, which is best suited for servers and enterprises, so while you likely will not need it, it is one of those things that are better to have enabled if you can. On a sidenote, Ventoy should work just fine with the latest Windows 11 release. Do you happen to have Secure Boot enabled when installing Windows/Linux? I hope this helps clear up your confusion.

There should be an option in the bios to change the sata controller mode by default it should be set to AHCI try setting it to Compatible and see if that fixes the problem that should bypass the driver.

Yeah, kernel level anti-cheat doesn't work and sucks for anyone that's not running Windows. I wanted to play Garden Warfare 2 the other day and installed windows 10, it's fun, but not worth having to dual boot every time. Windows is so heavy, 30Gigs just for it. I pray for the day when more people get on linux and more apps get support.

@@RalzoneI agree, I had an very old laptop that was only 32gb storage, of these 32gigs I could only use 4, I then installed an modded version of windows that was a bit lighter and it freed 5 more gigs, I was able to play some games on it and then finally decided to threw it away, best decision of my life.

It probably didn't have the VMD thing tho which is weird as to what all that's about causing these issues with Windows on some setups. Only just learning about it. Currently using Mint too on my PC. I like it :)

Switched to Linux Mint 22 this week. After I realized how much time I sacrificed to Windows. It's astronomically faster in every way. The virtual machine of win11 I installed is faster than the desktop. I'm just waiting on a good custom window tiling manager for mint (Like Fancy Zones on Windows). Linux is for Computer People, Apple is for Creative People, Windows is for people who like problems.

@@joesmith6643Because the live USB is not enrolled via secureboot. Your motherboard's secureboot function checks for storage devices that are enrolled with secureboot, if there is a key mismatch it would hide the enrolled device from the bios screen or kernel until you clear the enrollment.

I like Manjaro personally . Mint is nice . Ya the vmd controller is for raid so you really don't need it unless you are running a raid array in your system . A raid array is where you combine two drives for double the storage and slightly faster speed . It just uses different drivers because of the Intel raid rst it's different from ahci that's basically just using one drive and it's much faster than raid unless you have two drives in raid . Ventoy doesn't work for anything much except Linux I've noticed it doesn't have secure boot and the best program for loading windows is Rufus or the windows USB installer . I do like windows 11 but it comes with some issues if you don't game you don't really need it but for my use it won't work only reason I mentioned Manjaro is because of Aurora it will allow you to convert Debian apps to arch it's not perfect . Well right on man. If Linux works for you I have a USB with Manjaro on it but Windows has what I need at the moment .

Skill issue tbh. The hardware inside the laptop is newer than the drivers bundled into the Windows 11 iso. So you either download the latest package from the Lenovo support page (with the exact serial number on the laptop) or wait for the next major windows update which would come out in 8 or 9 months.

Man, this is the most uninformed video I’ve watched today. Why are you using Ventoy in the first place? Not only is it buggy but it’s no longer being developed. You should be using Rufus as that is the tried and trusted method and it has far encompassing support. I also find it funny that you blaming Windows for a problem that your hard drive manufacturer created. The Windows Installation environment uses generic drivers to ensure that it is compatible with as many devices as possible. Unfortunately companies like Samasung don’t bother making sure their storage devices work with basic drivers requiring you to have to install the required drivers yourself. Also did you try using the classic set up experience?

I am not a tech, so I'll ask why do you need installing a driver to show hardware? What is a decent laptop? My exVista Asus F5RL is a decent laptop, on Linux Wilma. After refurb and cleaning inside. That doesn't mean Win11 owes me the ability to install it on this machine. I wouldn't touch Lenovo with a long pole anymore. Many other decent choices out there. Installed Win11 23H2 into my QEMU virtual machine on Linux, without much struggle. That on Dell Latitude, about 3 years old. Chatbot is my troubleshooting champ. What I did: 1. Get a different Windows 11 ISO, put it into Ventoy (Make sure to choose the right partitioning GPT or MBR), 2. Do a Normal Boot in Ventoy, 3. Click next until you get the option that lets you use the old Windows 10 installer and after that everything worked flawlessly. P.S. I've had this issue everytime I've had a bad ISO file and the only way to fix it is boot in normal mode after getting a new ISO. Also yeah Ventoy sucks, Rufus is THE WAY to make a bootable Windows USB but Ventoy does work, just keep trying new ISOs there will be one that works.

You can use rufus or also if you can get it to boot with your method you might need to download the raid drivers for your Lenovo for your processor model/generation you will need to put it on the usb and search for the driver. during installation acer has this issue too. it's because you can't disable raid and change it to ahci mode in the bios windows installation needs the raid drivers to see your drives. You may have to use an older driver as well you'll have to search for the year maybe some forums have some other drivers. Or if you have another pc you can try to install it inside of that pc and put the SDD inside your laptop.
