1 handicap here ; try to feel athletic over the ball, and stand a touch, and I mean only a touch, further away from the ball. Try to engage your hips on both your takeaway and when you fire through the ball. Don’t be afraid to slow it down a bit a the top either. Good luck brother!!

I've been a tuba player for about 50 years and learnt how to clean my instrument whilst still at school (obviously, that was back in the stove age!). When Besson still made instruments at their Edgewater factory in North London I remember being told by their craftsmen to not use 'dish soap' in the water if your instrument is lacquered as opposed to silver-plated. Regularly, household detergents contain salts which can attack the coating over time and ultimately will cause the lacquer to flake. To be fair, B&H lacquer always was very poor. Also ensure that any flexible cleaning brushes are in good condition. Older ones can snap in tight tubes and bends, thereby requiring expensive professional repairs.

How much soap should you put into the tub?

    • @tonytortora448

Just enough to see some bubbles on the top. 2-3 good squeeze from the bottle

If a brass instrument hasn’t been cleaned in a while, you will need a chemical clean “chem clean” ask your local music shop they should be able to do it

One thing about playing a tenor is to not move around much. That creates the image that you are creating momentum. Doc Cheatham was an expert at this when he played trumpet. I can not watch NEWK play b/c he moves around too much like a rock and roll player and he loses that effect. But of course, I can listen to him just not watch him.

An impossible question to answer perhaps, but how much practice time can a senior citizen put in who is returning to brass playing after many years of not playing? I want to build up my lip, but I don't want to damage my lip in the process. My instrument is euphonium, and intuitively it seems I can do 1 to 1 1/2 hour per day broken into multiple sessions, and my lip is tired but not over-tired at the end of the day. If I push harder/longer my lip feels like I may be pushing it too much. I would really like to work it up to the 1 1/2 to 2 hour range. Any suggestions? By the way, this evening I watched a zoom presentation on Buddhism. The presenter was a violin player at a major orchestra. I asked him how Buddhism affected his playing, and he had an interesting recommendation, which was to "play with joy."

that's really cool! I guess its up to you... my friend who is retired practices a lot but that's because he has a lot of time on his hands. you can practice euphonium longer if you practice fundamentals first (i.e. brass gym sam pilafian/ pat Sheridan) identify your goals and work in a positive way, you got it! thanks for the message
