I feel you man. I can relate, coming from poor... like really poor when I was young. One thing that I cannot forget during my primary school days was having to bring 1 hard-boiled egg to school everyday for recess. Just 1 hard-boiled egg wrapped in a plastic bag hidden inside my bag. During recess i would take it out and my friends would laugh at me as most of the time the egg would be squashed by my books. Hence today, I love eating eggs... 30 eggs/week. Fast forward today, after years and years of hard work and struggle... and risk taking... i have my own place, my own car, bike, investments, savings, running my own business in and out of the country, and most imprtantly... try to stay as humble as I can be. Sometimes my friends would ask why I gave big notes to beggers when I bump into them? I would ask them in return... how often do they (beggers) get to receive a big note from someone? So, why don't we make their day because I know exactly how it felt to be poor and hungry, sometimes for days.

For one thing I know, Punjabi is a minority in India let alone in Malaysia but Punjabi is among the most succesful ethnic groups in the world. There must be something in the worldview of Punjabi people that steer them to the place where they are. When your mother went out for work and left you and your siblings locked in your own apartment with a strict order not to come out of the apartment no matter what and you and your siblings abode by the order to me that indicates a strong mother-children bond, trust, respect and obedience. Should you broke that order we all know the most probable outcome with children when they are let free to do what they like.
