Visiting Artist Lecture: María Elena González
González presents works from the
series “Tree Talk” which was inspired by an encounter
with a fallen birch tree in the woods of
the summer artist colony Skowhegan School of
Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine.
In addition, she presents what has become another
body of work which she calls “Repairs.” She
began these works during the summer of 2020,
which was punctuated by the lockdown due to
the pandemic, when it seemed everything
around us was broken or breaking.

John Pomeroy - Visiting Artist Lecture
It seems as though when a lot of black painters today create a body of work the one central them and common thread in all their work centers around issues of marginalization and the imposition of external forces as impediments to advancement and survival. Do these artist and painters really see their world like this or is this done as a gimmick because they have pigeon holed themselves to the point where this is the only theme they feel they can explore in order to have their work viewed?
