Haven’t watched this but what’s happening in Black Dog in the B section riff is that the phrase is played with three 16th notes as the pick up into the beat. Then the same phrase is repeated but it shifts so that only two of the 16ths are the pick up. Then it’s played with only the first note as the pick up. Finally, it’s played with the entire phrase on the beat. The drum part doesn’t change underneath. It’s an old dance band arranging thing that JPJ learned from his father. Simple when you sit down and do it.

TheDrummission - You're obviously right, Purdie is lying. The proof - the drum tracks for the Beatles entire recorded history, if not 100% 99.99% remain, so why doesn't Purdie identify from that trove, where his kit, his, distinctive style, his playing, is obvious. Case closed. The guy must have some serious mental issues, and I mean that sincerely.

I really like these dudes and LOVED Fossen's lines on Dreamboat Annie. They were perfect, uncanny! I feel bad that the guys signed a deal where Ann/Nancy got 51% business control. Talk about a foolish decision. If you go back way back, you see that Heart (probably 90% Ann) has always had a contrarian/shady streak. For example, Ann has said, before she met Mike Fisher she was inhibited, yet at the height of their fame, there was a Seattle Times article where she talks about being a teen in '68 and choosing to date wild guys who were "essentially punks," because they were the "only ones that were 'alive.'" LOL.The Wilsons it seems, will say anything for publicity. I saw them in Vancouver at a '78 gig, that was 'okay' and incredibly, the sisters said NOT our second hometown of... but claimed they were FROM Vancouver. Let me say again, they didn't say we lived here, and gigged here for years, they said they WERE Canadians which earned some derisive boos from the huge crowd. I couldn't believe it and the cool Canadian folks I was standing next to ("festival seatings") started laughing, looked at me (going to school in Bellingham) an Amercian obviously by accent, and said "can you believe this shit?" I said, "Oh yes, I certainly can." I find their bare shoulder cover on 'Annie' "no big," who cares? Shoulders? I do think it sucked the rest of the band isn't on the cover, because without the guy's contributions, no Dreamboat Annie, no success as Heart, imo. I also think the "it was only our first time" lesbian marketing is - I agree with the sisters -idiotic. Do I believe for one instant it was done without their approval? Nope. Do I think they regret it? Yep. I can tell you they weren't the number one band in the world or close, when the "only our first time" lesbian story came out, and it was hardly big news in the music business. Music was 'it' in the 70's you can't really appreciate how important it was. The 'lesbian' story may have been a headline for a day, or a few hours - yet Ann/Nancy have dined out on it for decades. No one beleives it now - and everyone knew it was just cheesy, shitty marketing, then. It was a tiny blip. I hate the way the gals belittle the guys - in their autobiography, Nancy insinuates a big reason for getting together with Roger was to cut down on hotel expenses, LOL, (one less room needed). Nancy also claims that a Chinese restaurant my family went to constantly (I'm from Kirkland) was prejudiced against girls doing certain things (she worked there) - yet tons of girls worked there in every capacity. Maybe the sisters actually 'mis-remember' things to fit a narrative. In the their interesting autobiography, Ann and Nancy bemoan the 80's and the record company, yet Ann (I bought the audiobook version which they narrate which is really cool) in her own voice says "the record company was right, it went to number" (whatever) and then says "The record company was right again." If the hits penned by others was such a burden, why did they stay with that style for so many years? Answer - because it paid a lot and they weren't writing their own classics any more. The classic 'Annie' lineup was 'it' for me. And the bottom line is, if you, a top band, have the songs, EVERYTHING else is okay. Heart simply didn't have the songs in the 80's and had to rely on outside writers. In fact, by the the late 70's Heart relied increasingly on Sue Ennis's writing contributions. Not to mention, the 70's Heart's enormous debt to Zeppelin (whether you love or hate Zeppelin's influence) stylistically, can't be overstated. Mushroom records really did screw Heart over in terms of business which hurt their career and I believe, their writing prowess. Magazine would have been a great concept album if it had been completed that way. BTW, I have a copy of Magazine with the acoustic guitars out of balance and WAY too loud, but being that loud, you really hear how great Nancy's acoustic playing was - her timing is incredible. Finally, as a live act Heart from 76'-80 could on a good night, kick ass. But the great songs soon deserted them, imo. They've had a good run...

I don't play open handed generally, but I play this open handed. Keep the hi hat going with my left (I'm r/h) and do the snare and crashes with my right. Means I can easily use either crash, and also do some floor tom hits (like I hear on the record) while keeping the beat on the hi hat, and don't cross my arms. Ok, it took a bit of work, but it flows better for me. Oh, also I'm counting in 4/4 all the way with some 2/4.

Please Please Me was The Beatles' live show. In fact George Martin wanted to record them at The Cavern Club, but getting the tape machines down there proved to be problematic. With The Beatles was the songbook. I much prefer it to Dave Dexter's sonic abominations and butcher jobs, but it's hard to tell if The Beatles would have taken off without them.

From an old Modern Drummer interview where he also claims to have replaced Keith Moon, to a YT video where he claims to have recorded Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew". The truth will never set him free.
