I have no idea why AC 3 was so unpopular, it is the best incarnation of the game, it has everything. Matter of taste but AC : Syndicate is the only game that touched this for pure magic. And well Valhalla with the Paris DLC is now coming close but still a superb AC incarnation. There's no pleasing some people as Jesus once said. :P
As much as I enjoy the modern AC games, I do miss these ones a lot as well. The stories and gameplay mechanics of AC II through to Black Flag were the best in my opinion.
Unity was solid also, but after that, their franchise fell tf off
