In this first video on “practicing the masters”, I will use the Elgar concerto to give you tips on how to make gestures that bring out the music you have in mind. I call them “sound gestures”. I will introduce the terms “square” (holding back) and “round” (fluent / connecting) gestures. If you want tips on different passages or need a full explanation, please leave a comment below or Subscribe ...

Gracias maestro por compartir el video. Gran calidad de contenido y una excelente explicación!
Your techniques and comments are lucid, and both well demonstrated and well explained. I have subscribed but please keep me posted with new tips. Many thanks.
Excellent video, thank you. I haven’t located your video on Bow Strategies - where can I find it?
🙏🏽
Thank you for another lightbulb moment.
I have been a student of Aikido from my early teens and as crazy as it may seem, moving with my cello is difficult whilst trying to play. Patience it is said is a virtue and never more true when applied to the cello.
Amazing person and professional
As a professional dancer now learning cello, this lesson about expression through motion is very enlightening ❤
It's true, the aspect of the center of gravity's movement while playing the cello is fascinating and showcases the complexity of this instrument. The ability to mechanize those small movements and maintain proper balance is crucial for cellists. It requires practice, control, and body awareness to maintain a stable posture while executing different techniques with both hands. This duality between stability and mobility adds an additional layer of challenge to mastering the cello and is part of what makes this instrument so rewarding to conque. Thank's
I struggle with shoulder pain, especially when I play on the A string. What exercise or practice tips would you recommend to alleviate this. Thank you so much, your videos are so informative and helpful to my practice!
Often shoulder pain comes from a rotated sitting position when playing on the A string. Start sitting “neutral”, like playing on the G string, now place your hand in 1th position on that string and move it slowly towards the A string without rotating your back. In this position your wrist will be a little higher, relax the left shoulder and the elbow while keeping this”bridge form”. Now play on the A string while concentrating on a relaxed left shoulder. Good luck!
Wonderful video, very concise, and connects beautifully to the music, thank you kind sir
This is a wonderful lesson.
Gracias por los subtitulos jefe 🙏
Erm. I meant playing! Sorry! 😂
I’m thinking of taking up the ‘cello! Later in life - I’m 52! But I spent my early years playing the tenor viol with a Renaissance music group, so I have an immediate in. There are a few differences - the viol has frets and a flat back. Different scroll, too! But you are an amazing cellist! I thought Jacqueline Dupré had Elgar in the bag, to be honest! But I find I’m preferring your version of it! Happy laying and wish me luck! At least I won’t have to read the tenor clef any more! 😅
Love this! Wow 🤩 Thank you 🙏
How much does a cello like this one cost?
Thank you so so much.❤🎉
I am so fortunate to find you today. the best teacher for ambitious older the woman’s late life passion about cello . You’ll teach me a lot that I know. Thank you so much for there for me.
👏👐👏👐👏👐👏👐👏👐
👍
Muchas gracias he visto todos los vídeos y he aprendido mucho de ellos 👏🏻
Did you ever make a video about the Golden principle, bow strategies?
Wow! I really love all of your videos. I appreciate the angle/perspective you bring to these concepts. It speaks to me. I look forward to coming back to your videos over time to digest more of your wisdom. Thank you!
Incredible sound.
I have little hands and when I want to go, for ex., from B on the A string to A on the D string I don't know if I must extend my left hand or go one whoke tone toward the bridge.
Beautiful!
You are gret thank you
great
Thank you 🙏 you are the greatest artist!!
Pathetic amateur. Should stay away from "teaching"!!!
Wow gracias por los consejos ♡♡
I cannot buy this music from my local shop. I have discovered the first movement from playing by ear but want to learn the whole thing. Where can I buy this sheet music?
Imslp man. You could print it out for free If you really really do want the full score, google should be able to help you find a shop thatll ship to you
The best explanation of what is meant by the confusing word colour when talking about music. Thank you Adrian you have taken the mystery out of the meaning of the word colour in music. You are a very good teacher. I learned so much in a few minutes. A most beautiful cello so even across all four strings. I would love to know where it was made and the maker. I subscribed immediately.
Thank you for your kind words Gerard and glad that my video content is helping you. My cello is an old French instrument from 1765, Soguet, Paris. Best regards. Adrián
Hi Gerard, thank you for your nice comment and happy that my message came through. My cello is an old French instrument from 1765, L. Soquet, Paris. Best regards , Adrian
These are amazing videos please make more!
Decades ago, this was one of the works that marked my entrance into the world of Classical Music, when the documentary Remembrando Jacqueline had recently come out. Congratulations on the excellent video Adrian, a beautiful contribution to studies that transcend the instrument. Follow my Like in the video. Fraternal hug here from Brazil, Minas Gerais.👋👋👋🌞
Thank you for the helpful video! I really appreciate it, as it has helped me a lot 👍🏼
Thanks , these tips are invaluable, these are the things you forget to ask your teacher during lessons. 👍
Fantastico Maestro
I don't own a cello but I keep watching these videos
Great! I like the use of flat fingertips for a wider vibrato!
This is one piece I am determined to learn. I love your approach, it resonates with me using the full body to express the emotion in the music. Now, if I can just master the intonation!
It's a holistic approach, rather than perfect technical ability only
Your whole approach to describing and bringing very practical advice to help improve our playing is so appreciated , it's hard to concentrate because I can't wait to hear you play !! Wonderful !!
wawww that"s great, thanks a lot for sharing with us your knowledge
I’m doing the viola transposition of this piece and yet this was super helpful 👏✨ thank you!
Hi viola
Thank you!
Congratulations, these vídeos they're very good...
Thank you all for your positive comments, will publish a new serie of short, direct videos on a variety of postural and technical issues in 2021.
Thanks, Ad, for your videos! Still have fond memories of my year in Rotterdam. Groetjes uit Irland. Violetta
... First of all, my apologies, once I couldn't see your name so as to I start my comment as it should be started. Really, the big problem on teaching this kind of matters isn't the technical aspect but the way how making people to understand the PRINCIPLES -technical improvement comes with the practice. So, I must to thank you for your way of teaching, when it also is useful for beginners.
