    Mateusz has been my favorite artists and one of my biggest inspirations as an illustrator for about a decade now. I've learned so much from him over the years and everything he makes never fails to amaze me. I'm wondering if there is a link to his Paris presentation? I would love to watch it. ❤

    32:15 I think a solution to that is to actually go to people outside design and ask them thoughtful questions regarding what they think of your work. When we are in a bubble making stuff, especially with the internet, it is easy to forget the eudemonic joy of seeing someone look at something you made and get something out of it. I try and do this with designs, and I’ve noticed an increase in the enjoyment of the process and the quality of the concept because Im no longer held to professional standard or self-sourced goal, but rather to the end audience. Once the objective becomes more holistic, like providing an experience for people you care about, then the self judgement or self deprecation silences itself. Of course, some mistaken this as being held to the audience or feeling they must maintain a certain look to not alienate people, but I think if you fear alienation you will forget those who you can serve better following a more ikegai-based project approach. That is, you will serve serve others better with work that you care about more profoundly, while still maintaining economic viability not through a compromise with trends/skillset but rather in an effort to, again, approach it acceptively and holistically with more consideration for others than yourself, even at the risk of short term economic or social tension, at least as far as I see it. Great talk.

    I have tried Unreal 5 and came back to this podcast. They are true, it takes triple amount of time compared to blender when doing concept art, but you can put on the file whatever you like without thinking about optimization.

    • @_casg
      @_casg 2 месяца назад

      yeah i think that's the throwback. YES IT takes forever and a half to load anything. and yes you will end up restarting the program a lot. and yes Unreal engine will shut down when you least expect it. But dammit you can literally add a much shit as you like to your hearts content. The optimization is spotless.

    Amazing podcast. I'm sorry the algorithm has changed, and visibility went down. For a topic I'd like to hear is. Could you discuss art skills that only comes with experience? I know deliberate practice is something that speed up the learning, but what are there things that only mileage can give to the artist? Not sure if it was discussed before, but would like to hear about it.

    Yeah. I agree in regard to saving energy on on a lot of drama that's happening with AI and social media. I tend to get too involved and in the end it's sometimes not worth it. Probably the biggest contribution that was worth it was just donating to people who do the actual work and spreading the word on that. In regards to guests I would be curious to see interview with Ian McQue because he seems like interesting person and has quite broad range of work. Illustrations, concept art, purely observational lanscape drawing and recently I discovered he even does abstract art.

    I think podcasts about alternative workflows or ways of approaching design in general is always interesting. As for people, I'm still surprised George hasn't been on here considering Emmanuel could probably go knock on his door haha. Obviously it's not that easy, but it would be great to hear more about his (or other people's) ideas and philosophy behind their art as well as their mental process throughout a given day. You could also bring on more experimental types like Ian Hubert, he worked with Paul Chadeisson on his short film and has really fascinating views on visual storytelling and innovative filmmaking workflows.

    i'd love to hear more about how older concept designers shared their artwork back in the 80s-90's to secure jobs and network. I find social media mentally exhausting and can't even imagine managing multiple platforms to find work... I don't think i have the capacity for that and wish there was more alternatives to social media, especially for new artists trying to break into the concept design industry.

    • @hovigalahaidoyan4080
      @hovigalahaidoyan4080 6 месяцев назад

      I would think back then this discipline was so niche that relatively few people were doing concept art/design, so most artists probably knew each other or at least knew OF each other and could refer one another when a job came up. Also, this was before entertainment design got globalised like everything else...most everyone probably had to be in Hollywood.

    I'm so thankful that Mat and Kana are speaking up and doing something about the way women are portrayed in anime and manga. It's something that has bugged me for a long time! I haven't watched mamy mainstream anime in a long time because of it. I try to find more wholesome/slice-of-life alternatives. Artists really do hold a lot of influence and power that we just don't stop to think about often enough. Also, loved the points on simplifying our workspaces and what we post. Even touching on everyone wanting to be an artist full-time. As someone who has been trying and failing for over 6 years. It's been very hard to come to the conclusion that it's okay for me to not be full-time and keep this as a hobby. Not everyone can make it. The pressure ot takes off of me is great.

  • @marek_tarnawski

    I really enjoyed this episode. Thanks for doing the interview! The last words from Mateusz about making things simple got me thinking. Maybe it's just me but when I see now the images on Cara I got impression that artists in general are going towards more simplified and stylized work. I wonder if this is some trend that will further differentiate human hand made art from the AI generated images. Or maybe it's a generational thing. On Conceptart forums the trend was more to do way more technical realistic type of illustrations with almost academic quality. For sure something will change. Looking for software alternative to is definitely a pain. I work in studio so I don't need to pay for the Adobe package at the moment. However I did a little bit of playing with other programs and if I had to move away I would probably use mix of Krita and Affinity suite. Krita is good at painting but it's lacking when it comes to more graphic design type of stuff. Affinity programs on the other hand are decent repacement for graphic design type of work but I don't like how they work for painting. Things are definitely getting interesting recently.

    One thing I really liked when talking to Mateusz is that he made an additional comment on good versus skilled: For students and beginners who need to put work out and feel overwhelmed by the task of producing morally good work, he said, "it's good to focus on technical skill as self-improvement, but once it becomes self-indulgence then it's time to push yourself to move more into the 'good'." I think Matthew Crawford, a mechanic and philosopher, wrote on how our cognitive activities actually inform our moral beliefs and vice versa in a positive feedback loop, and that the two are intertwined and make us who we become. Mateusz is a good example of someone who cares about both processes and I can respect that, thanks!

    I think you can still say "you're better" without thinking of someone else. Instead of "oh I'm better than him because I did one more drawing!" I tend to remind myself "I'm better, than I was -x period of time- ago" and that helps drive me. I'll look back at work from 6 months ago, a year ago etc and think "okay damn... I HAVE gotten a lot better" which can be hard to notice in the context of day to day. Then I tell myself "okay think about how much better you are now, and how you've improved since these drawings, now think about that again 6 months later...it will be the same"
