Sexy Lexi, celluloid knight and protector of the hallowed halls of the Last Video Store, the greatest bastion of all things cinema. A true gentleman and scholar, delivering quality guests and delectable staff picks 5/5 Stars. My rental combo would be a new release of Perfect Days and weekly picks of Paris, Texas (I know, two Wenders, cant believe you met him) and the Wages of Fear (1953). Keep up the good work <3
So true
Man, what a great episode! I grew up in the same town as Abubakar and I remember when our local BlockBuster started stocking video games, it was life-changing. Going from playing the same demo disks over and over again to finally being able to play full games, damn that was the shit. They sold off all their movies when the store closed down and I remember going with my dad and buying most of the Coan Brother's films for dirt cheap and watched them over a couple of weekends. I definitely wouldn't love film as much as I do had it not been for that place. Keep up the good work Alexei and thank you Abubakar for your insightful conversation, fantastic body of work, and for repping Welwyn Garden City
Mate this is one of my favourite comments! What a great connection. Drop us your rental combo in a reply and I’ll get you a recommendation on an upcoming episode! ❤
@@alexeitoliopoulos494 Oh damn man, that's so lovely! Let's see... My new release would be La Chimera, it's my favourite from this year and I already know it'll be one I revisit on the regular. The term "Dream-Like" gets thrown around a lot but La Chimera feels like a film you wake up from. As for my weekly, the first one would Mikey and Nicky. Elaine May is one of the greats and I could watch Falk and Cassavetes all day. And, seeing as my dad got a shout-out in my original comment, my second weekly would be Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, for my mum. She showed me that when I was ill and missing school and I fell in love! I'm never not in the mood for that picture. Big fan of your work Alexei, especially this project. Sending love from the UK brother
MY RAISED BY WOLVES KING!!!! I CANT BELIEVE THEY CANCELED IT. so happy hes still getting big work tho
I DEADASS SAID THE SAME SENTENCE
How do you cancel raised by wolves? Literal the worst decision in tv history
I FUCKING KNOW
😂
😂😂😂 WTF
JRM is an ICON!!!
Haha-I still have nightmares about returning DVDs or library books late…one specific film that shows up in said ‘nightmares’ is Julie Taymor’s Titus…which I wish I had somehow conveniently ‘forgotten’ to return to a dying video store😉😉 Another great interview! After I watched BMX Bandits I regretted not visiting Manly when I came to Sydney…next time; it’s gotta live up to that film!! I’d like to watch The Castle-I hope it’s on Tubi! Until you and Keith showed the DVD cover I thought Killers of the Flower Moon was a smaller gem I liked with a similar title, The Flowers of War, in which Christian Bale played a priest rescuing Chinese girls from WWII atrocities. You have convinced me to dedicate time and thought to Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
This is such a great concept-it warms my heart, especially as a millennial woman who went to many a Blockbuster in her youth to rent Velvet Goldmine and Ride with the Devil! Alexei really is on par with Leonard Maltin-keep sharing your knowledge and passion for cinema! I’mma watch your interview with Keith Urban too-that’s one degree of separation away from the Aussie-and film icon that is his wife! And Jonathan…I will always have a soft spot for him and root (sorry Aussies, this is a Canadian-ism🙃) for him to keep kicking in spite of his addictions that still haven’t dulled his early career memories-what great stories here-I also stan Jeffrey Wright-Angels in America👌 Finally Jonathan is now a straight to video B-movie king-I wonder what that transition has been like from his more mainstream Hollywood days. A couple of his more recent films I liked are Edge of the World and Holy Lands. The Aspern Papers was nice to look at too-Venetian palaces and velvet jackets galore😉
Cough..cough...
Incredible interview . The amazing Jonathan
First point: great interview, Alexei. I wish you all the greatest success this life has to offer, because your passion for and knowledge of cinema dictate that it simply MUST happen. You are the modern-day Leonard Maltin (of Australia and beyond) - and also "I AM DB" is one of the greatest improvisations of the past decade at least. Second point: Jonathan is exquisitely talented in both his chosen craft and as a speaker. But he reminds me here of Oliver Reed. Or Richard Harris. Or Peter O'Toole. John Hurt. Those incredibly talented, incredibly well-read, educated, well-spoken - eloquent - gentlemen of yesteryears. Which is a good thing because Jonathan clearly has their talents and shares the same heart and soul. But also a bad thing because he seems to be haunted by the same demons as they were haunted by (or embracing). And it's not 60s or 70s anymore. Alcohol is worse for quality and for wear. Decadence is no longer cool (and I'm not saying JRM is trying to make it cool or make it into attribute of "cool" - not at all; nor did he ever try to). @Alexei - keep on going, mate. You are honestly great. It's a pleasure every time to listen to your interviews. @Jonathan, should you read this - stay strong, mate. Fight the demons. And may the beauty within you defeat the darkness and demons that you are battling against. Godspeed - and while you do not know me (nor, in all likelihood ever will) - I truly, sincerely wish you my very best. Do not give up - and prevail.
Hi Alexei, what are your thoughts on trailers and their role as unreliable arbiters of information? An example of this, and one that absolutely irks me every time I think of it, is the trailer for Drive (2011). A film that I believe could be the ‘perfect film’, has a trailer that suggests “all out action” without any nod to the actual underlying theme and the intricacies that mark the film out as special! In other news, should there be any interest, my new release would be ‘Kinds of Kindness’ as it has been somewhere in my daily thought process since I watched it on its Disney Plus release date. Weekly are, unsurprisingly, Drive (2011) and (probably, this is a very hard choice) Th Hateful Eight (2015). Close to making the two weekly slots are; Predator, Pulp Fiction, The Exorcist, The Thing (1982) and The Night Comes for Us. Big fan, keep up the great work! Alex

Wow, this is so exciting! Velvet Goldmine is a really important film to me, and I remember how thrilled I was when I found out Jonathan Rhys Meyers was going to play Henry VIII in The Tudors, iconic! Can’t believe he was almost in Elizabeth, another of my favorites… something was in the air in 1998! So many movies I love came out then.
Yeah I’m finding more and more that somehow Velvet Goldmine grows in importance and reputation with each generation (which is such a surprise because it’s kinda notoriously hard to find! I had to borrow the dvd from the library). Really beautiful film, that I think I said it to him, will be even more important a true classic in 50 years
@@alexeitoliopoulos494 I also feel like social media and fandom/stan culture have made Velvet Goldmine even more relevant these days.
No way! I literally JUST rewatched Bend it Like Beckham, and googled what he’s up to these days.

I absolutely love this. I’m only halfway through and I feel the need to comment. Came here for Sam…., staying for you both 🫶🫶🫶…. absolutely love you guys together. You just bounce off each other which is so great - thanks for all the recommendations to all his other stuff and I can’t wait to catch up on all your other stuff. I love all the films Sam mentioned and all the ones you have too. I’m autistic… If I could’ve found a group of friends like you when I was younger, my life would’ve been very different. I honestly cannot get enough of Sam’s style of humour ….. I feel like I’m from another planet most days LOL… Listening to Sam I feel totally sane ha ha!! He is literally my favourite comedian in the WORLD at the moment… I spent a lot of time in Oz & Queensland years ago - I miss it so much I want to come back. I’m a Sign Language interpreter… I often wonder how the hell would I be able to interpret Sam’s comedy - it would take months of prep I’m sure… but I would really love to do it one day!!!! I might try & interpret one of his shorts soon. I recently went to a festival with a Deaf friend who was 25 and she said she had never seen any comedy …. I don’t think people realise how many barriers there are for deaf people x Thanks again for all your wonderful recommendations. I’ve got a lot of tabs open now and I will go through them all. I am 53 so I saw Gregory’s Girl when it came out. Love, light & peace from Wales 🏴
